Patent number: 6247016Abstract: A method of data classification using a decision tree having nodes is disclosed, along with an apparatus for perming the method. Periodically or after a certain number of nodes of the tree are split, the partially built tree is pruned. During the building phase the minimum cost of subtrees rooted at leaf nodes that can still be expanded (“yet to be expanded nodes”)is computed. With the computation of the minimum subtree cost at nodes, the nodes pruned are a subset of those that would have been pruned anyway during the pruning phase, and they are pruned while the tree is still being built.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1998Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Rajeev Rastogi, Kyuseok Shim

Patent number: 6246480Abstract: An improved stepped etalon comprises a transparent body having a stepped surface. Adjacent step lands are separated from each other by a transition region which includes a curved, waved, or otherwise varied step wall such that the average height of the stepped surface does not change abruptly in the transition region from the height of one land to another, but instead varies gradually according to the particular shape of the step wall. In an alternative embodiment, the step transition is formed using a grey-scale or half-tone patterning in which the average height gradually varies across the transition region. The non-planar transition region reduces the amount of coherent interference caused by the step transition thereby reducing the dead spot behind the step transition portions where interference prevents accurate measurements of light transmission from being made.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1999Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Stephen O'Brien

Patent number: 6247108Abstract: A method for improved memory management during the processing of binary decision diagrams in a computer system. Prior to creating a new node in memory, a find operation is performed to determine if that node already exists in memory. A hash key is computed for the new node and a hash table is accessed to retrieve a pointer to a linked list of nodes which are potential matches for the new node. The linked list is in increasing order of the chronological age of the nodes. The nodes are sequentially retrieved from main memory in the order of the linked list. The retrieval is terminated at the last linked node which was created subsequent to the child nodes of the new node.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1998Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: David E. Patent number: 6246366Abstract: A direction to the location of a mobile terminal from an antenna array is determined. A sequence of symbols from each antenna 2 in the array, is stored. The sequence contains a known training sequence. The sequence is space processed iteratively so as to produce the effect of the array having a major lobe in its polar diagram at a plurality of different successive directions. A set of crosscorrelation metrics is derived by calculating a crosscorrelation metric for each direction between the combined signals and the known training sequence. The ratio is calculated of the crosscorrelation metric for each direction to the power of the combined signals for that direction to produce a set of direction metrics. A direction is ascribed to the mobile terminal using the direction metrics to determine which direction is most likely.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1999Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Timothy James Speight

Patent number: 6246689Abstract: Efficient topology aggregation is realized by generating a full-mesh topology from an original sub-network topology, without compromising accuracy. Then, the full-mesh topology is reduced to a first spanning tree aggregation topology. Distortion in the first spanning tree aggregation topology is evaluated to determine if the resultant spanning tree aggregation topology requires further refinement in order to meet a predetermined distortion criterion. If no further refinement is required, the aggregation topology is advertised. Additionally, a network parameter, e.g., a so-called network radius is generated from the full-mesh topology. In this example, the network parameter is evaluated along with the first spanning tree aggregation topology to determine if the spanning tree aggregation topology requires further refinement. If no further refinement is required, both the aggregation topology and the network parameter are advertised.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1998Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Yuval Shavitt

Patent number: 6246667Abstract: A restoration procedure for use in bidirectional multiplex section-switched ring transmission systems re-establishes a connection path by using a loopback connection at nodes bordering the failure and by then establishing a jumpered connection path, for each active tributary affected by the failure. The jumpered connection path at affected node eliminates any unnecessary loop formed in the re-established connection path caused by the loopback connection at the border nodes. There is stored in memory at each node (1) the provisioned connection path, (2) the jumpered path, and (3) a jumper flag is set indicating that a jumper connection exists. When the failure is cleared the (1) jumpered path is removed and its record erase from memory, (2) the provisioned connection path is restored, and (3) the jumper flag is reset. Advantageously, the this operation can be programmed into existing node controllers and is compatible with existing restoration procedures.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1998Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: James E. Patent number: 6241778Abstract: Data words are converted to codewords in accordance with a run-length limited (RLL) or maximum transition run (MTR) code in which the codewords are subject to one or more constraints on the number of consecutive like symbols. The data words and codewords are each partitioned into a number of disjoint subsets. Associated with each of the disjoint subsets of data words is a distinct mapping. A given data word is converted to a codeword by applying to the given data word the mapping associated with the subset containing that data word. The mappings are configured to utilize symmetry whenever possible. For example, if Y=&psgr;(X) represents the mapping of a given data word X onto a corresponding codeword Y. then it is preferred that X′ and Y′ representing the words X and Y in reversed order, satisfy the relation Y′=&psgr;(X′).Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1999Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Adriaan J. de Lind van Wijngaarden, Emina Soljanin
