Patent number: 6215934Abstract: An optical fiber [10] having protective coating materials [14, 15], which surround an elongated strand of glass [12], is designed for improved strippability. Preferably, the optical fiber includes two layers (primary and secondary) of radiation-cured polymeric materials surrounding the glass fiber. The primary layer has an equilibrium (in-situ) modulus that resides within the range 120 to 500 psi. Additionally, the primary coating has a pull-out force (adhesion) that is less than 1.2 pounds per centimeter of length (lb/cm), and preferably resides within the range 0.5 to 1.0 lb/cm. It has been found that by increasing the equilibrium modulus, delamination resistance is increased. This has allowed designers to decrease pull-out force while maintaining a suitable delamination resistance. Patent number: 6215821Abstract: A method and apparatus for achieving maximum bandwidth reduction in communication networks. The invention provides a multisource coding scheme, implemented through an intersource coding block that provides maximum bandwidth reduction for transmissions from a plurality of time-correlated information sources over a single physical link. In one embodiment of the invention the intersource encoder uses run-length coding to compress the aggregate bit rate before the physical transmission. The intersource encoder provides data compression for both completely correlated and partially correlated sources. For completely correlated sources, the intersource encoder strips off the intersource redundancies and transmits only a single copy of the information over the physical link, wherein the single copy is a superpicture. The body attains this strength, it is believed, by precipitation of silica at the contact sites of adjacent silica particles, thereby forming neck regions. The resultant network provides the strength to the gel body, such that the body is capable of being dried under more severe conditions than a gel body formed by previous sol-gel methods and is also more robust toward handling. The controlled precipitation is attained by inducing gelation and initiating drying at a pH of about 10.5 or higher, at which silica remains highly soluble.
