  • Patent number: 6144705
Abstract: In a system for simulcasting digitally modulated and analog FM signals over the same FM frequency band, the effect of the analog FM signal on the digitally modulated signal in the simulcast is calculated and canceled from the latter signal before its transmission. As a result, the digital transmission is free from interference from the analog FM signal. Moreover, the digital transmission is designed in such a manner that the interference caused thereby to the analog FM signal is kept at a minimal level.

  • Patent number: 6144710
Abstract: A cellular communication signal receiver receives a desired signal in the presence of at least one co-channel interference signal. The receiver comprises a channel estimator configured to receive a plurality of training signal samples to estimate the finite impulse response to the desired signal and the co-channel interference signal. The finite impulse response estimates having a predetermined number of channel taps defining the length of the desired channel and the length of co-channel interference channel. A Viterbi decoder is coupled to the channel estimator, and configured to receive the desired and co-channel interference signals. The channel estimator generates channel tap estimates. A power calculator is coupled to the channel estimator and configured to estimate the power of the estimated channel taps.

  • Patent number: 6144780
Abstract: An optical switch having a straight waveguide core with a lateral waveguide core extending therefrom. A region of polymer material is disposed in the straight waveguide core to deflect optical waves from the first waveguide core into the lateral waveguide core depending on the relative indexes of refraction between the first waveguide core and the polymer material. The temperature of the polymer material is adjusted, thereby adjusting the index of refraction of the polymer material so as to cause the deflection in a switched state, and to allow light radiation to pass through the polymer material in an un-switched state.

  • Patent number: 6139356
Abstract: A kit for labeling connector blocks to facilitate expansion and identification of connectors in one or more connector blocks. The kit provides modified connector blocks and a system for labeling the connector blocks. The connector block of the present invention comprises a base having spaced-apart rows of connectors and a raised pedestal corresponding to each row of connectors. A first set of pre-printed sequential numbers appear on the base identifying the leftmost connectors of each row. A second set of pre-printed sequential numbers appear on each connector across each row. In a configuration where two connector blocks are placed side-by-side, the raised pedestals of the first block advantageously overlap the first set of pre-printed numbers on the second block. Each raised pedestal further provides a surface for the application of self-adhesive labels to identify the leftmost connectors of each row on the second block.

  • Patent number: 6141553
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for using fuzzy logic to determine when handovers are desirable and the extent to which the radio transmission power in a cellular telephone network should be adjusted. The mobile phone and the base transceiver station measure certain system parameters, including rate of handover, quality, distance, level, call duration, and power. These measurements are input to a fuzzifier. The fuzzifier applies standard fuzzy-set-theory membership functions to the measurements, and the fuzzifier outputs a set of fuzzy variables corresponding to the measurements. The fuzzifier outputs are input to an inference engine. The inference engine contains a set of rules that, when applied to the inference engine inputs, indicate: when a handover should be performed; when a handover should not be performed; and the amount by which, if any, the transmission power should be adjusted.

  • Patent number: 6141252
Abstract: An integrated circuit has an improved voltage regulator for use with memory devices that utilize secondary electron injection for programming. The memory device, typically a floating-gate EEPROM, has source and drain regions formed in a doped tub region. A first voltage source is used to reverse-bias a diode, formed in the same process as the source and drain regions of the memory device, to near the breakdown voltage. A small bias current flows through the reverse-biased diode from the first voltage source to a second voltage source, thereby establishing a reference voltage. The drain voltage of the memory device is then biased, typically by a bipolar transistor, to about a diode drop (about 0.7V) below the reference voltage, and hence correspondingly below the drain-to-tub breakdown voltage of the memory device. In this manner, the reference voltage tracks changes in the memory device due to process variations, temperature variations, etc.

  • Patent number: 6141090
Abstract: Fiber optic cable waste is avoided by measuring amplitude oscillations of four-wave mixing products in positive-dispersion and negative-dispersion fiber optic cable to determine the lengths of a first, positive-dispersion cable segment and a second, negative-dispersion cable segment that are used to provide a specified length of fiber optic cable having a specified amount of path-average chromatic dispersion. The integrated dispersion of a positive-dispersion fiber optic cable as a function of length is measured to provide a first set of data, and the integrated dispersion of a negative-dispersion fiber optic cable as a function of length is measured to provide a second set of data. A fiber-optic cable is simultaneously fed with two optical signals, a first at wavelength .lambda..sub.1 and a second at wavelength .lambda..sub.2, and the number of sinusoidal oscillations that occur in the four-wave mixing products of the Stokes (or anti-Stokes) sideband as a function of cable length are measured.

  • Patent number: 6139371
Abstract: A communication connector assembly has a base support, and at least first and second pairs of terminal contact wires with base portions mounted on the base support. The free end portions of the contact wires define a zone of contact within which electrical connections are established with a mating connector, and each pair of contact wires defines a different signal path in the connector assembly. The first and the second pair of contact wires have corresponding leading portions extending from the free end portions, to a side of the zone of contact opposite from the base portions. A leading portion of a contact wire of the first pair, and a leading portion of a contact wire of the second pair, are constructed and arranged for capacitively coupling to one another thus conveying capacitive crosstalk compensation to the zone of contact where offending crosstalk is introduced by a mated connector.
