Patent number: 6018666Abstract: Limiting the base stations to which a wireless terminal will attempt to establish communication. In a first and second embodiment this is done by the wireless switching system or another system having the capability of storing within each individual wireless terminal a list of base stations that can be utilized by that wireless terminal. When a wireless terminal first registers on the wireless switching system, the wireless switching system would be responsive to the identification code of the wireless terminal to transmit a list of base stations that can be utilized by the wireless terminal to the wireless terminal. The wireless terminal then stores that list for future use. In a third embodiment, each tenant would be assigned a group number. Each of the base stations would periodically transmit the numbers of the groups that could access the base station. A wireless terminal monitors these group numbers before attempting to register on a base station.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1996Date of Patent: January 25, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: David L. Patent number: 6016703Abstract: The present noninvasive load and pressure sensing system makes use of a transparent pressure vessel that is filled with a compressible fluid, whose refractive index changes as a function of the pressure applied to the compressible fluid to redirect the path of a light beam that is transmitted through the transparent pressure vessel. An incident beam of coherent monochromatic light is applied to a transparent segment of a wall of the transparent pressure vessel, where this incident light beam is refracted by the compressible fluid contained in the transparent pressure vessel. The refracted light beam traverses the transparent pressure vessel and exits the transparent pressure vessel at a point along the opposite wall of the transparent pressure vessel as determined by the refractive index of the compressible fluid, which is determined by the pressure of the compressible fluid.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1998Date of Patent: January 25, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Lee Landis Blyler, Jr., Scott E. Patent number: 6017787Abstract: A twin tub integrated circuit and method for its formation are disclosed. A portion of the substrate is covered by photoresist while an n region is formed, illustratively, by ion implantation. Then the n region is covered with a protective material, illustratively a spin on glass or another photoresist. The previously-formed photoresist is removed and a p-type implant is performed to create an p region. When all the protective layers are removed, both regions have upper surfaces which are co-planar. The co-planar surfaces, a departure from previous practice, make submicron lithography easier. The regions are annealed to form twin tubs.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: January 25, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Sailesh Chittipeddi, William Thomas Cochran, Stephen Knight

Patent number: 6018753Abstract: Interpolating filter banks are constructed for use with signals which may be represented as a lattice of arbitrary dimension d. The filter banks include M channels, where M is greater than or equal to two. A given filter bank is built by first computing a set of shifts .tau..sub.i as D.sup.-1 t.sub.i, i=1,2, . . . M-1, where t.sub.i is a set of coset representatives taken from a unit cell of the input signal lattice, and D is a dilation matrix having a determinant equal to M. A polynomial interpolation algorithm is then applied to determine weights for a set of M-1 predict filters P.sub.i having the shifts .tau..sub.i. A corresponding set of update filters U.sub.i are then selected as U.sub.i =P.sub.i */M, where P.sub.i * is the adjoint of the predict filter P.sub.i. The resulting predict and update filters are arranged in a lifting structure such that each of the predict and update filters are associated with a pair of the M channels of the filter bank.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1997Date of Patent: January 25, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Jelena Kovacevic, Wim Sweldens

Patent number: 6018762Abstract: A way of synchronizing the contents of commonly-owned mailboxes (108, 111) in disparate messaging systems, such as an e-mail system (100) and a multimedia system (101), networked via the Internet (102). The e-mail system uses the existing auto-forwarding feature (115) of the Internet e-mail community to send a copy of every message arriving at the e-mail mailbox to the other system's synchronized mailbox. The other system applies a 3-part synchronization rule (113) to every message (200) arriving at its synchronized mailbox. If it detects a syncmark (204)--an identifier--of its own mailbox in the header (201) of the message, indicating that the message was previously copy-forwarded from this system, it just deletes the message.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1998Date of Patent: January 25, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Gordon R.
