  • Patent number: 5978678
Abstract: The registration notification signal sent to the home cellular system when an internationally roaming cellular mobile station registers in a foreign cellular system includes an identification of the currently serving switching node. Upon subsequent receipt of an incoming call dialed to the roaming mobile station home directory number, the home cellular system signals the serving cellular system and a temporary local directory number is assigned and returned to the home cellular system. The switching node identification is then processed to identify the proper international dialing digits for calling the country where the serving switching node is located. The returned temporary local directory number is then appended to the identified international dialing digits to form an international telephone number which is used by the home cellular system to route the received call to the currently serving cellular system for delivery to the called internationally roaming mobile station.

  • Patent number: 5974444
Abstract: A local host computing system, a remote host computing system as connected by a network, and service functionalities: a human interface service functionality, a starter service functionality, and a desired utility service functionality, and a Client-Server-Service (CSS) model is imposed on each service functionality. In one embodiment, this results in nine logical components and three physical components (a local host, a remote host, and an intervening network), where two of the logical components are integrated into one Remote Object Client component, and that Remote Object Client component and the other seven logical components are deployed among the local host and remote host in a manner which eases compatibility and upgrade problems, and provides an illusion to a user that a desired utility service supported on a remote host resides locally on the user's local host, thereby providing ease of use and minimal software maintenance for users of that remote service.

  • Patent number: 5970407
Abstract: A mobile assisted handoff (MAHO) signal strength measurement is ordered by the cellular telephone system for not only the currently used traffic channel and the reference (control) channels of neighboring cells, but also for the reference (control) channel of the current cell. These MAHO measurements are reported to the system where a compensation factor is determined which accounts for the use of different modulation schemes and or hyperbands by system traffic and control channels. The compensation factor is calculated by subtracting the MAHO measurement made on the reference channel of the current cell from the MAHO measurement made on the traffic channel of the current cell. The calculated compensation factor is then added to each of the MAHO measurements made on the reference channels for each of the neighboring cells to generate compensated signal strength measurements.

  • Patent number: 5970408
Abstract: Control circuitry and an associated method for a modified-user, wireless communications system, such as a cellular communication system wherein groups of mobile transceiver units are positioned to travel together. Circuitry is positioned to travel together with the group of mobile transceiver units and to generate common control requests to control operation of the entire group of mobile transceiver units. When embodied in a cellular communication system, a common hand-off request is generated for the entire group of mobile transceiver units, obviating the need for each transceiver unit to independently generate a hand-off request. If a mobile transceiver is operable pursuant to an air interface standard dissimilar to a fixed-site transceiver with which communications are to be effectuated, a converter converts communication signals so that the communication signals can be communicated therebetween.
