Abstract: The present invention is a fully connected feed forward network that includes at least one hidden layer 16. The hidden layer 16 includes nodes 20 in which the output of the node is fed back to that node as an input with a unit delay produced by a delay device 24 occurring in the feedback path 22 (local feedback). Each node within each layer also receives a delayed output (crosstalk) produced by a delay unit 36 from all the other nodes within the same layer 16. The node performs a transfer function operation based on the inputs from the previous layer and the delayed outputs. The network can be implemented as analog or digital or within a general purpose processor. Two teaching methods can be used: (1) back propagation of weight calculation that includes the local feedback and the crosstalk or (2) more preferably a feed forward gradient decent which immediately follows the output computations and which also includes the local feedback and the crosstalk.

Abstract: A double sided barrette having a pair of support members, a clasp, a hair gripping mechanism and a pair of decorative members is provided. The pair of support members are coupled to one another by a hinge such that the support members can pivot between open and closed positions. When in a closed position, the clasp operably engages these support members and maintains them in a releasably fixed relationship with respect to one another. The hair gripping mechanism is disposed between the support members such that strands of hair engaged by the gripping mechanism are spaced from the support members. The decorative members are individually attached to the support members in order to conceal the support members and provide an ornamental appearance to both sides of the barrette.

Abstract: In a two-wire cylinder dryer, the wire guide rolls are so arranged that the web and wire proceed jointly from the first cylinder to the wire guide roll. An air carrier box is arranged in the shaft contained between two cylinders. The air carrier box has an air channel connecting the area of the leaving point A with an opposite pressure zone. Hot air flows into the air channel through a driver nozzle, so that in the area of the leaving point there is a vacuum zone created which is outwardly bounded by a sealing strip. The pressure zone is bounded by further sealing strips.

Abstract: Solid superacid catalyst, for example sulfated zirconia, is used in the oxidative dehydrogenation of saturated or partially saturated hydrocarbons, for example the conversion of isobutane to isobutylene in the presence of an oxygen-containing oxidizing agent at reaction conditions typically including temperatures from 500 to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, superatmospheric pressures, and oxygen/alkane molar ratios from 0.2 to 20. Performance of a metal-oxide or metal-hydroxide oxidative dehydrogenation catalyst may be enhanced by pretreating a solid superacid or other catalyst containing metal oxides or hydroxides at a carbonizing temperature with an organic material, for example an oxygen-containing organic material, to form a carbonaceous layer on the surface thereof prior to use of the catalyst in oxidative dehydrogenation.

Abstract: Novel compounds are provided that are effective to inhibit the activity of DHUDase or UrdPase. Such compounds have the general formula ##STR1## where X is S or Se; Y is I, F, Cl, Br, methoxy, benzyl, selenenylphenyl, or thiophenyl, and R.sub.1 is an acyclo tail having the general formula ##STR2## where R.sub.2 is H, CH.sub.2 OH or CH.sub.2 NH.sub.2 ; R.sub.3 is OH, NH.sub.2, or OCOCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CO.sub.2 H; and R.sub.4 is O, S, or CH.sub.2.The compounds can be used in pharmaceutical compositions, along with various chemotherapeutic agents to increase the efficacy of the treatment. These compounds can also be used in methods of treating patients by coadministering or sequentially administering the enzyme inhibiting compounds with a chemotherapeutic agent effective to treat cancers, or viral, fungal, bacterial, or parasitic infections. The compounds have further utility in enhancing imaging.

Abstract: A warning device for a coupling system including a non-mechanical switching device for determining whether a latching mechanism in the coupling system is locked and a signalling device. The switching device providing a first output the latching mechanism is locked and a second output when the latching mechanism is unlocked. The signalling device providing one of a plurality of unique signals to an operator based on the outputs provided by the switching device, wherein each of the plurality of unique signals indicates a unique coupling condition of the coupling system.

Abstract: The invention concerns a rotor for the pressurized, hydrodynamic purification of paper pulp from old papers in known purifying equipment comprising a cylindrical screen, characterized in that it comprises a generally cylindrical case extending along a longitudinal axis of rotation 6 and comprising a sequence of n identical elements 8 arrayed side-by-side along the longitudinal axis 6, the screen-side wall evincing a shoulder 14 on either side of which it winds spirally around the longitudinal axis over at least 360.degree., the base and the top of the shoulder subtending a very slight angular gap .OMEGA. relative to said axis in such manner that the shoulder side 14 slopes toward the screen surface, the slope angle .alpha. relative to the radial plane through the shoulder base being between 5 and 80.degree., the elements 8 being mutually shifted in the direction of rotation around the axis 6 by an angle .beta. with a magnitude of at least 360.degree./n, where n is at least 3.

Abstract: A riding rotary mower is provided having a first chassis, a first chassis wheel assembly, a second chassis, a second chassis wheel assembly and a deck defining a blade housing containing a plurality of cutting blades. The second chassis is movably connected to the first chassis such that, upon actuation of a hydraulic assembly, the second chassis and the deck are movable relative to the first chassis between an operating position wherein the second chassis, the deck and the cutting blade are positioned for cutting grass, and an inspection position wherein the second chassis, the deck and the cutting blade extend in an upwardly direction at an angle to the first chassis.

A registration confirmation message, initial voice channel designation message or initial traffic channel designation message may include system parameter values to enable the mobile station to ensure that it is currently registered in the system in which it is currently located.

Abstract: An applicator for application of coating color on a paper web, including an applicator; a backing roll which wraps the paper web; an entrance gore formed between backing roll and applicator, and an outlet gore. A doctor follows the outlet gore for removing surplus coating color (doctor surplus) from the paper web. A deflector system is provided between the applicator and the doctor. The deflector system features a first guide surface for diverting a first coating color surplus from the outlet gore, as well as a second guide surface for the doctor surplus.

Abstract: Methods and an apparatus for measuring gas flow with greater reliability than earlier single-rotor and double-rotor turbine meters and dual turbine meter systems are disclosed. The apparatus comprises two independent rotors, in close proximity of each other, housed in the same meter body, but isolated from the effects of each other. No pressure and temperature correction are needed for accuracy performance comparison between the two rotors. Because of the two rotor averaging technique, the reliability of the volume totalization is greatly improved over earlier double-rotor and single-rotor designs.

Abstract: A pile driver arrangement including a reciprocal impact member connected to a piston rod which is also connected to a reciprocal piston located in a hydraulic cylinder having a lower rod end and an upper blind end. A hydraulic fluid tank and a pump for supplying hydraulic fluid from the tank to the lower rod end of the hydraulic cylinder to lift the piston and the impact member. A first hydraulic fluid conduit connecting the upper blind end of the hydraulic cylinder and the lower end of the hydraulic cylinder and a check valve to prevent the flow of hydraulic fluid from the lower end to the upper end of the hydraulic cylinder. A second hydraulic fluid conduit connecting the pump and the lower end of the hydraulic cylinder and a control valve in the second conduit for controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid from the pump to the lower end of the hydraulic cylinder.

Abstract: A device for cleaning soiled health care instrument having bristles carried by a tubularly bent flexible panel within a tubular container. The container has opposite ends one of which is enclosed and the opposite of which permits cleansing entry of instruments into the container. Said opposite end may have a self-sealing door entrance for projection therethrough of the instruments to be cleaned. Protection is provided against injury from exposed sharp edges of the instruments be cleaned. Liquid cleaning simultaneously with the bristle cleansing is provided. Aerosolization preventing suction may be associated with the container.

Abstract: A wire or felt forming section of a paper-making machine has breast rollers for guiding a respective one of two forming wires. The two rollers are disposed with a pulp gap formed between the two rollers and the wires are disposed just downstream of a pulp suspension ejecting nozzle of a headbox. Each roller is supported against the respective taut forming wire by a hydrostatic bearing. The hydrostatic bearing has two circumferentially separated resiliency chambers provided in a combined region of resiliency disposed over an arc of the circumference of the roller. A sealing strip after the region of resiliency prevents fluid from contacting the wire.

Abstract: A scale comprising a regular arrangement of optically or magnetically different response characteristics such as light reflection and light diffusion portions or light reflection and absorption portions is attached to a moving object either directly or by way of an intermediate member. The scale can be attached to a motor or the like even after assembling with associated mechanical components, thereby enabling easy measurement of the mode of operation of the motor or similar movable objects. The light beam from the light emitting device is directed to the label media and the reflected light beam is received by a light receiving device to identify the individual object or product based on the label.

Abstract: A baby exercise device comprising an elongated pole section including first and second pole members slidably connected to one another and securable in a fixed position by tightening a thumb screw device connected between the first and second pole members; and a butterfly bar, rotatably mounted on the pole section in a manner such that a lower section of the bar is positioned about eight inches above the floor. Each pole member includes a suction cup connector mounted at a distal end thereof in a manner to allow the sole section to be mounted between the floor and ceiling of a structure with one suction cup in contact with the ceiling and one suction cup in contact with the floor.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting events occurring in a telecommunications network is disclosed which comprises stored program control (SPC) exchanges, each SPC exchange comprising a switch and processors for executing software programs to control the switch. Code sequences, or daemons, are implanted in selected portions of the software programs, each code sequence including a conditional statement responsive to certain events and at least one activity resulting from the detection of a certain event satisfying the conditional statement. A lock value is assigned to each of the code sequences, each lock value uniquely identifying the corresponding code sequences and being operable to activate the processor for executing the code sequence. A key value is compared to each lock value for selectively activating the processor to execute the code sequence when the key value equals the lock value.
