  • Patent number: 5457450
Abstract: The present invention relates to an LED traffic signal light containing numerous LEDs and a voltage compensation circuit which allows the traffic light to operate over a wide range of input power voltages, while generating sufficient light intensity to control traffic at a highway intersection. The voltage compensation circuit achieves these objectives without substantially increasing the power consumption, overall cost, or failure rate of the LED traffic signal light. In the preferred embodiment, the voltage compensation circuit disables or rearranges a first and then a second set of LEDs in the traffic light, as the input power voltage drops below a first and then a second threshold voltage, so that the remaining LEDs will be driven by an increased current and generate a greater overall light intensity than if all of the LEDs were driven by the decreased current that would result from the decreased input power voltage.

  • Patent number: 5453559
Abstract: A hybrid condensation-absorption process and unit is disclosed for the recovery of olefins. A mixed-component stream containing hydrogen, methane and olefins is compressed and refrigerated against propylene refrigerant to partially condense the stream. The condensate is stripped of volatile components and fed to a fractionation unit such as a deethanizer. The volatile components stripped from the condensate and the non-condensed vapor from the mixed-component stream are fed to a solvent absorption unit to remove olefins which are absorbed in the solvent. The olefins-rich solvent is regenerated to recover olefins and lean solvent. The lean solvent is recirculated to the absorption unit. The olefins recovered from regeneration of the solvent are fed to the fractionation unit along with the pre-stripped condensate. Vapor from the absorption unit is cryogenically processed to recover a crude hydrogen product, a fuel gas product and residual olefins which can be recycled to the absorption unit.

  • Patent number: 5453075
Abstract: An orthosis for stretching tissue that limits compressive forces on the soft tissue around a joint during movement of the joint. The orthosis includes two relatively pivotable cuff arms with a cuff on each arm. The cuffs clamp onto the body portions on either side of the joint. The pivot axis of the cuff arms is spaced from the pivot axis of the joint, so that movement of the cuff arms to extend the joint results in distractive forces being applied to the joint. The cuffs are selectively moved on the cuff arms, during extension and flexion, to provide the proper amount of distractive forces to the joint and to limit compressive forces on the joint. A mechanical advantage is gained through the use of a gear drive mechanism for transmitting to the joint the force applied by the patient. This allows the orthosis to be relatively small and light weight. The orthosis also provides a portable system for continuous passive motion therapy for a joint.

  • Patent number: 5452087
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for measuring pressure in a pressure containing vessel with a non-intrusive, metal-embedded fiber optic pressure sensor. The pressure containing vessel may, for example, be the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. A Fabry-Perot Interferometer is arranged in a terminated, single mode fiber to function as a strain gauge. The fiber Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FFPI) is embedded in a metal part which may be disposed in a wall of the pressure containing vessel. The metal part and FFPI experience a longitudinal strain in response to the pressure in the vessel. In another aspect of the invention, a non-intrusive fiber containing the FFPI may be embedded along the axis of a metal bolt. The bolt may be used to attach a part or structure, which is directly exposed to the pressure, to the wall of the vessel. Consequently, the bolt and FFPI experience a longitudinal strain in response to the pressure on the part or structure.
