  • Patent number: 10137498
Abstract: A high-pressure die casting apparatus including a shot sleeve extending through a first die half to a molding surface, and a plunger received in the shot sleeve is provided. The shot sleeve includes a side wall presenting a fluid passageway and a partial end wall disposed in a fixed position relative to the side wall. The partial end wall defines a wall opening adjacent the molding surface. Fluid is poured into the shot sleeve while the die apparatus is open, and the partial end wall prevents the fluid from flowing out of the shot sleeve. The plunger then presses the material into the mold cavity until only a portion of the material remains in the shot sleeve and blocks the wall opening. After the solidified material is ejected from the apparatus, the portion of material blocking the wall opening prevents lubricant from entering the shot sleeve.

  • Patent number: 10052721
Abstract: A process is described for laser welding a sheet metal workpiece having an aluminum-silicon containing pre-coat layer disposed on at least one major surface thereof, and having first and second opposite side edges. The sheet metal workpiece is arranged such that the first and second side edges are in contact with one another and such that the at least one major surface faces outwardly. A closed tube-shaped product is obtained by forming a laser-weld joint between the first and second side edges. In particular the laser-weld joint is formed absent removing the aluminum-silicon containing layer from along the adjacent edges, such that aluminum from the aluminum-silicon containing layer enters into the melt pool that is formed. An alloying material is introduced into the melt pool during laser welding and forms a compound with at least some of the aluminum in the melt pool.

  • Patent number: 10052720
Abstract: A process is disclosed for laser-welding sheet metal plates that have an aluminum-silicon containing pre-coat layer. The pre-coated sheet metal plates are arranged one relative to another such that an edge of one of the plates is adjacent to and in contact with an edge of the other one of the plates, and a laser-welded joint is formed along the adjacent edges of the pre-coated plates. • Patent number: 9988706
Abstract: An automotive component (20) is manufactured by depositing a non-metallic coating (24) on a surface of a steel blank (26) before hot stamping the steel blank (26). The non-metallic coating (24) is typically applied by physical vapor deposition. The non-metallic coating (24) is formed of one to three layers (32) each having a different composition. The non-metallic coating (24) includes at least one of silicon and carbon, and can also include oxygen, nitrogen, ceramic compounds, and carbides. The total thickness of the non-metallic coating (24) is less than 300 nm. A metallic coating (30) can be applied to the steel blank before the non-metallic coating (24). The non-metallic coating (24) provides numerous advantages, including reduced scaling during the hot stamping process.

  • Publication number: 20180141098
Abstract: A forming system includes a first die, a second die, and a cooling system. A sintered material is formed on opposing portions of the first and second die surfaces to form a relatively low thermal conductive die region. The first die and the second die have opposing, relatively high thermal conductive surfaces to form a relatively high thermal conductive die region. The cooling system is disposed in a thermal conductive relation with the relatively high thermal conductive surfaces. The sintered material on the opposing portions of the first and the second die surfaces cooperate to be on opposite sides of the work piece received in the die cavity. Portions of the work piece in direct contact with the sintered material are cooled at a cooling rate slower than that of portions of the work piece that are in direct contact with the relatively high thermal conductive surfaces.

  • Patent number: 9950471
Abstract: A method for forming butt joints between thermoplastic members by resistive implant welding. A tongue is formed on one member to be joined and a complementary groove is formed in the other member. A resistive implant is placed between the tongue and the groove which are then pressed together by an applied pressure. An electric current is run through the resistive implant to melt a portion of the thermoplastic material of both the tongue and groove, and the melted plastic intermingles through the implant. When the electric current is removed, the plastic cools, forming a weld.
