Patent number: 5653340Abstract: A package comprises a plurality of articles, a strap and a carton of a tubular structure. The articles are arranged in a group of at least one row such that the longitudinal axes of the articles are disposed vertically and parallel to each other. The strap extends generally horizontally around the circumference of the group of articles to hold the articles together in a unit. The carton includes a top wall panel, a pair of side wall panels and a pair of secured base panels. The carton extends around the group of articles such that the side wall panels are disposed over the straight runs of the strap, respectively. At least one of the side wall panels has a restraining flap for limiting vertical displacement of the strap. The flap is hinged to the side edge of the one side wall panel and is folded inwardly of the tubular structure into the space between adjacent articles in the row to be disposed at a location vertically adjoining the adjacent straight run.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1995Date of Patent: August 5, 1997Assignee: The Mead CorporationInventor: Jean-Yves Daniel

Patent number: 5634564Abstract: A pusher device for dispensing merchandise is disclosed. The device includes an elongate plastic track having a floor on which a row of articles are positioned for movement therealong, a pusher connected to the track for movement therealong and having a front side for engagement with the rearmost article on the track, and a spring for urging the pusher toward the front end of the track to forwardly move all the articles on the track. The spring is a gradient force, self-coiling spring arranged to exert forwardly directed force on the rear side of the pusher. The force on the pusher gradually reduces as the leading articles on the track successively are removed from the track, and thereby articles on the track are prevented from being subject to excessive force. What is also disclosed is a pusher device including an elongate track, a pusher movably connected to the track, and a self-coiling spring for urging the pusher forward of the track.Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1995Date of Patent: June 3, 1997Assignee: The Mead CorporationInventors: William S. Patent number: 5631080Abstract: The invention is a method for flocculating clay including the steps of preparing a dispersion of a processed clay containing a polymer as a flocculating agent. The polymer is present in an amount sufficient to cause bridging of particles of the clay in the dispersion by the polymer. Then the dispersion is mixed to cause the polymer to bridge the particles and the particles flocculate. The invention also includes a structured clay produced by this method.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1995Date of Patent: May 20, 1997Assignee: The Mead CorporationInventor: Gary Fugitt

Patent number: 5624024Abstract: A collapsible carrier for tapered articles is disclosed. The carrier includes a pair of upright handle panels secured together in a face-to-face contacting relationship, a pair of divergent upper panels foldably joined respectively to the lower edges of the handle panels, and a pair of convergent lower panels foldably interconnected with the upper panels to form in cooperation with the upper panels a tubular structure. Each upper panel has an article-receiving aperture. Each lower panel also has an article-receiving aperture. The receiving aperture in each upper panel is vertically aligned with that in the adjacent lower panel. The summation of the widths of the lower panels is less than that of the widths of the upper panels so that the tubular structure is prevented from collapsing flat when at least one of the vertically aligned pairs of the receiving apertures are loaded with an article.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1995Date of Patent: April 29, 1997Assignee: The Mead CorporationInventor: Kenneth Miess

Patent number: 5595310Abstract: A display device has an article dispenser having front and rear opposite edges and designed to support articles. The dispenser includes a plurality of parallel tracks extending from the front edge of the dispenser toward the rear edge. Each track receives a row of articles for movement along that track. The dispenser also includes a diverting pathway extending substantially transversely of the tracks. The pathway interconnects the rear ends of the tracks and receives articles for movement therealong so that articles are allowed to be transferred from the pathway to each track and vice versa. The dispenser further includes a guide member disposed adjacent to the rear end of one of the tracks. When the articles in the track associated with the guide member are moved backwards along that track, they are brought into contact one after another with the front surface of the guide member and guided laterally along the front surface into the pathway.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1995Date of Patent: January 21, 1997Assignee: The Mead CorporationInventors: William S. Patent number: 5595292Abstract: A carton includes a top panel, a pair of side panels foldably joined to and extending downwardly from the side edges of the top panel, and a strap handle formed in part from the top panel and in part from the side panels. The handle extends transversely across the top panel and is joined at its opposite end portions respectively to the side panels for movement between a stowed position and a raised position. When the handle is in the stowed position, the intermediate portion of the handle is disposed in the plane of the top panel whereas when it is in the raised position, the intermediate portion of the handle is bowed and disposed above the top panel. Each end portion of the handle has a foldable tab adapted to be pressed against an article within the carton and to thereby be folded to allow gradual stress increase in the handle when the handle is pulled upward from the stowed position.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 1995Date of Patent: January 21, 1997Assignee: The Mead CorporationInventor: Aaron Bates

Patent number: 5586687Abstract: A bottle dispenser has a gate mechanism to maintain the foremost one of the track-supported bottles substantially vertical. The dispenser includes an elongate track which defines a longitudinally extending pathway, a support assembly for the track, and a stopper provided at the front end of the track. The track supports a row of flanged bottles such that the bottles are suspended by their neck flanges for movement along the pathway and removable from the pathway through the front end of the track. The support assembly supports the track such that the track is inclined toward its front end whereby the suspended bottles are allowed to gravity feed toward the front end when the leading bottle in the row is removed from the track. The stopper engages with the leading bottle to prevent its accidental removal through the front end. The gate mechanism blocks the pathway at a position between the front and rear ends of the track.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1995Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Assignee: The Mead CorporationInventors: William S.
