Abstract: The invention relates to liquid crystal phases (LC phases) having a particularly low threshold voltage, a particularly low ratio K.sub.3 /K.sub.1 of the elastic constants for bending (K.sub.3) and spreading (K.sub.1) and broad nematic phase ranges, these phases containing at the same time at least one highly polar component of reduced degree of association and, to reduce the quotient K.sub.3 /K.sub.1 of the elastic constants for bending (K.sub.3) and spreading (K.sub.1) of the phases to a value.ltoreq.1.1, at least one apolar liquid crystal component.

Abstract: New tetrahydropyran derivatives of the formula I ##STR1## in which G is H.sub.2 or .dbd.O, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each an alkyl group having 1-10 C atoms, it also being possible for one or two CH.sub.2 groups to be replaced by O atoms, or are F, Cl, Br or CN, R.sup.2 is also H, A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 are each 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, piperidine-1,4-diyl, 1,4-bicyclo[2.2.2]octylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl groups which are unsubstituted or substituted by 1-4 F atoms, Z.sup.1 and Z.sup.2 are each --CO--O--, --O--CO--, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, --OCH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 O--, or a single bond, m and n are each 0, 1, 2 or 3, but (m+n) is at least 1 and at most 3, it being possible, when m is 2 or 3, for the group A.sup.1 and, when n is 2 or 3, for the groups A.sup.2 each to be identical or different from one another, and the acid addition salts of those among these compounds which are basic, are suitable for use as components in liquid-crystal dielectrics.

Abstract: The circular polarizer comprises a liquid crystal cell, the liquid crystal layer (8) of which is present as a so-called "blue phase" and can be exposed to a variable electric field. The blue phase is an optically isotropic chiral phase which, like the cholesteric phase, reflects circularly polarized light within a narrow frequency band and accordingly, in this spectral region, transmits only light which is circularly polarized (in the opposite sense). Under the influence of the field, the reflection band changes its position and can be shifted almost continuously from blue to red by means of relatively small voltage changes.The circular polarizer can, by means of simple additional measures, for instance by including a color-neutral circular polarizer, be developed into a color modulator and, in particular, it also makes a multi-colored display of information possible.

Abstract: The invention relates to a chromatography column consisting of a metal tube which is filled with a sorbent and is provided with distribution elements and sealing elements at both ends. A screw connection for connecting capillaries which consists of at least one support nut attached to the column tube and a union nut are provided. The support nut is supported against two removable collar half-shells and can thus be removed from the column tube when the union nut is unscrewed.

Abstract: A process for preparing pigment dyes comprising reducing a colloidal dispersion of an impure dye to form a solution of the leucobase, introducing into this solution a finely divided substrate and, by adding an oxidizing agent, oxidizing the leucobase to form the vat dye, which thereby precipitates and deposits on the substrate.

Abstract: A sliding valve for withdrawing liquid or gaseous chemical products from a container has a cylindrical valve spool which slides axially in a bore through a valve housing. A first annular groove of the valve spool connects, in the open position of the valve, a product supply line to a product withdrawal line. On one side of this first annular groove there is a second annular groove which, in the open position, connects a gas supply line to a gas withdrawal line. An annular groove on the other side is connected to the second annular groove. By this arrangement, protective gas is admitted to the valve spaces on either side of the first annular groove, which handles the product, with the result that escape of the product to the outside, or penetration of impurities, are positively prevented.

Abstract: New separation materials for thin layer chromatography are based on carrier materials coated with an adsorbent silica gel layer which has been surface-modified by a silanizing agent after the coating step. The degree of covering of the modifying reagent can be adjusted in a defined an controllable manner, e.g., from 0.15 to 0.8 .mu.mol/m.sup.2 in the case of reversed phase materials and 1.2 to 2.5 .mu.mol/m.sup.2 in the case of hydrophilic materials. A process for the preparation of these separation materials is also provided.
