  • Patent number: 9567280
Abstract: A method for preparing a hop acid mixture having an enantiomeric excess of a (+)-tetrahydro-?-acid is disclosed. In the method, a racemate of a tetrahydro-?-acid is contacted with an amine to form a precipitate having an enantiomeric excess of the (+)-tetrahydro-?-acid. A method for preparing a hop acid is also disclosed. In the method, a racemate of a tetrahydro-?-acid is contacted with an amine to form a precipitate comprising a (+)-tetrahydro-?-acid, and the (+)-tetrahydro-?-acid is isomerized to a hop acid selected from the group consisting of (+)-trans-tetrahydro-iso-?-acids, (?)-cis-tetrahydro-iso-?-acids, and mixtures thereof, and reduced to (+)-trans-hexahydroiso-?-acids and (?)-cis-hexahydroiso-?-acids. An additive for flavoring a malt beverage is also disclosed. The additive includes a bittering agent selected from the group consisting of (+)-trans-tetrahydro-iso-?-acids, (?)-cis-tetrahydro-iso-?-acids, (+)-trans-hexahydroiso-?-acids, (?)-cis-hexahydroiso-?-acids, and mixtures thereof.

  • Patent number: 9066613
Abstract: A thermal barrier maintains a beverage within a container at a desired temperature. The barrier may include gas or liquid filled microcapsules and a base material having microencapsulated solid-liquid phase change material, or combinations thereof. The thermal barrier may include a cooling element attached to the exterior of the container, the interior of the container, or free-floating within the container. Other embodiments include a container holder incorporating phase change materials to control temperature of the beverages. The holder includes enclosing sidewalls and a plurality of cavities to receive one or more containers. Gaps between the cavities and the enclosing sidewalls are filled with phase change materials, such as microencapsulated phase change materials. Another embodiment provides a double walled pitcher with phase change materials and a base material filling the space between the walls. The phase change material and base material sealed between the walls enable the pitcher to be re-used.

  • Patent number: 9005687
Abstract: A method for reducing the amount of beverage soluble metal ions in a diatomaceous earth filter aid is disclosed. The beverage soluble metal ions can be copper and/or iron. In the method, the diatomaceous earth filter aid is contacted with a hop compound selected from iso-alpha-acids, dihydroiso-alpha-acids, tetrahydroiso-alpha-acids, hexahydroiso-alpha-acids, alpha-acids, and beta-acids. The diatomaceous earth filter aid can also be contacted with and an acid other than the hop compound such as phosphoric acid. The iso-alpha-acids, dihydroiso-alpha-acids, tetrahydroiso-alpha-acids, hexahydroiso-alpha-acids, alpha-acids, or beta-acids bind the copper and iron metal ions and/or change the form of copper and iron in diatomaceous earth so the copper and iron are rendered substantially insoluble in a beverage such as beer. A method for filtering a beverage using the treated diatomaceous earth filter aid is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8852377
Abstract: An insulative label is provided for a beverage container to reduce heat transfer, particularly heat transfer by conduction from a consumer's hand to the beverage container. The label comprises a dual-ply construction, with a grid pattern placed between the layered materials. Preferably, the label comprises a film base layer secured to the container, the grid pattern comprising an ink and varnish mixture printed over the film base layer, and a laminate top layer secured to the film base layer. Air is trapped in the gaps or spaces between the protrusions created by the grid pattern, and the trapped air insulates the container. The label has a very thin profile, thereby not perceptibly changing the appearance of the label or the container.

  • Patent number: 8734009
Abstract: A system, method and device determine the state of a beverage and communicate information regarding the beverage. A communication device runs an application that determines the start temperature of the beverage to be cooled and sets a desired end temperature. Thermochromatic inks are used on the container label or packaging of the container to convey temperature information. A camera of the communication device senses temperature information of an image of the container. The application then determines an amount of time for cooling the beverage also taking into consideration the type and size of container. The beverage is placed in a cooling device, a timer is initiated by the user, and the application later generates a message indicating the beverage has reached the desired end temperature. The user may link information generated from the application to social networking sites for purposes such as generating invitations to friends within the social network.

  • Patent number: 8640486
Abstract: An insulated and refrigerated beverage transport line provides enhanced temperature control of one or more beverages conveyed through the transport line. A plurality of coolant lines carrying a re-circulated coolant makes contact with the one or more product lines. One or more empty lines, referred to as packers, may be placed between the coolant lines and the product lines to provide a dimensionally stable and tight group of lines that are bundled together. An external insulation is provided over the bundle of lines to further enhance insulation for the beverage being transported through the product lines. At least one dedicated coolant return line may be placed remote from the other lines. The dedicated coolant return line carries the highest temperature coolant found in a beverage transport system. Independent and separate insulation of this dedicated coolant return line prevents inadvertent heat transfer to the one or more product lines.

  • Publication number: 20130319893
Abstract: A beverage container is provided, including an integral indicator of a prize for a consumer. The indicator includes two components, namely, a marker and at least one symbol. The marker or symbol is randomly located around the circumference of the container. Alternatively, both the symbol and marker may be randomly located. The resulting orientation of the marker and a pre-selected winning symbol dictates whether the consumer has won a prize. One or more sets of markers and corresponding symbols may be provided on the container to indicate multiple prizes, or a progression of events corresponding to one or more prizes.

  • Publication number: 20130251905
Abstract: A method of applying thermal inks to beverage containers includes use of a selected printing process for transferring controlled and discreet amounts of thermal inks to pre-designated portions of a beverage container. In a preferred embodiment, thermal ink(s) are transferred to the opening tab of a metallic container. During manufacturing, the ink can be applied in registered print rows that align with a plurality of corresponding spaced rows of tabs formed in tab stock. Each of the opening tabs has a pre-selected pattern of the applied thermal ink that can be used as a temperature indicator for a beverage within the container. Applying thermal ink to the opening tabs as opposed to larger areas of the container on the sidewall results in reducing the amount of thermal ink used.

  • Patent number: 8336729
Abstract: A thermal barrier liner is preferably spray coated onto the internal surface of a container. The liner is provided in embodiments including a closed cell substrate, a base layer having gas or liquid filled microcapsules, a base layer having microencapsulated solid-liquid phase change material, or combinations thereof. For the closed cell substrate embodiment, when the liner is under pressure within the container prior to the container being opened, the liner maintains a minimum thickness. When the container is opened and as pressure is released within the container, the liner expands to achieve equilibrium. The liner can be supplemented with a foaming agent to create cellular structures. Voids created by the microcapsules enhance the thermal barrier characteristics of the liner. The phase change material changes phase from a solid to a liquid state upon absorbing heat.

  • Patent number: 8297072
Abstract: A beverage container is provided with an integral cooling element to maintain a beverage at a cooled temperature after exposure to a warmer environment. The cooling element incorporates use of solid/liquid phase change material. When the beverage is chilled, the phase change material is maintained in a solid state below its melting temperature. When the beverage container is exposed to a warmer environment, such as during consumption, the phase change material undergoes a phase change thereby absorbing heat from the surrounding beverage. The cooling element can either be attached to the inside of the container or free-floating, but in either case, is in direct contact with the beverage.
