    Abstract: The invention relates to a biaxially oriented polyester film with a base layer at least 80% by weight of which is composed of a thermoplastic polyester, and with at least one matte outer layer which comprises a mixture or a blend of two components I and II wherein components I and II render the at least one outer layer matte. The invention further relates to the methods for use of the film and to a process for its production. Component I of the mixture or of the blend is a polyethylene terephthalate homopolymer or polyethylene terephthalate copolymer or a mixture of homo- or copolymers. Component II of the mixture or of the blend is a polyethylene terephthalate copolymer which is composed of the condensation product of the following monomers and/or of their derivatives capable of forming polyesters: isophthalic acid, aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, sulfomonomers and aliphatic or cycloaliphatic glycols.

The invention also relates to a method for forming the film.

    Abstract: The application discloses a transparent biaxially oriented polyester film having a base layer, at least 80% by weight of which is composed of a thermoplastic polyester, and having at least one outer layer, wherein the outer layer is composed of a polymer or a mixture of polymers which comprises at least 40% by weight of ethylene 2,6-naphthalate units and up to 60% by weight of ethylene terephthalate units and/or of units from aliphatic, including cycloaliphatic, or aromatic diols and/or dicarboxylic acids, with the proviso that the T.sub.g 2 value of the polyester film is above the T.sub.g 2 value of the base layer but below the T.sub.g 2 value of the outer layer, and the base layer comprises particles. The film has low oxygen transmission. It is particularly suitable for packaging applications, specifically for packaging foods and other consumable items, or as a can liner, a lid film or a thermo-transfer ribbon.

    Abstract: A device for laying a molten film 3 emerging from a slot die 2 onto a rotating take-off chill roll 1 has at least one electrode which is arranged parallel to and at a short distance from the surface of the take-off roll 1 and to which a high voltage in the range from 4 to 12 kV is applied. This electrode is, for example, a metal strip 5 which has a tapering sharp edge 6 that is oriented toward the surface of the take-off roll 1. In addition to this metal strip 5, a second electrode 27 is arranged at a distance from the surface of the take-off roll. This second electrode is a metal strip without a strip edge and has applied to it a voltage of a magnitude that is equal to or different from that of the metal strip 5. As a result, electric fields are formed in addition to the electric field from the one metal strip electrode 5.
