Abstract: An apparatus for automatically replacing anodes and cathodes disposed alternately in an electrolytic cell used for the electrolytic refining of a metal. The anodes are each formed with a pair of recesses on opposite edges of the upper end thereof, and a central cutout having a sufficient depth is formed between the recesses of the anodes. The apparatus comprises a pair of parallel rods engageable with the recesses of all the anodes and a plurality of clamping units adapted for clamping the cathodes on opposite sides of the upper end without engaging the anodes during clamping movement by virtue of the provision of the cutout in the anodes. Thus, the anodes and cathodes can be automatically loaded into and unloaded from the electrolytic cell while maintaining the predetermined inter-electrode distance required for the electrolysis of the metal.

Abstract: A system for automatically and continuously measuring the zinc and sulfuric acid concentration in an electrolyte circulating through electrolysis cells of a hydrometallurgical zinc production system, in which an inductive solution analyzer capable of continuously detecting the conductivity of the circulating electrolyte is used with a measuring cell disposed in the path of a continuous stream of the circulating electrolyte. The measuring cell comprises a defoaming chamber, a measuring chamber and an overflow chamber, and the continuous stream of the electrolyte flows through the measuring chamber as a downward stream so that bubbles can be removed and precipitation of slurry can be prevented. The signal representative of the detected conductivity is applied to an electronic computer which computes automatically the zinc and sulfuric acid concentration according to predetermined calculation formulas.
Abstract: A method of transporting objects wherein when the presence of one or more object is detected in a first stock apparatus, a transfer apparatus adapted to transport objects picks up one of the objects from said first stock apparatus and transports it towards a second stock apparatus, and only when the presence of a space for mounting such objects in said second stock apparatus is detected, said transfer apparatus transfers said object onto said second stock apparatus.

Abstract: The method for desorbing and removing methyl bromide contained in active carbon adsorbent comprises contacting an organic solvent vapor which is inert to the methyl bromide, either singly or in combination with water vapor or with an inert gas, with the active carbon on which the methyl bromide is adsorbed, at a temperature such that the solvent vapor or vapor admixture can exist only in a non-condensed state.
Abstract: 2-Phenyl-1.2.3-triazole-4-carboxaldehydes having the formula: ##STR1## are obtained by oxidizing a 2-phenylglycosotriazole having the formula: ##STR2## wherein R is hydrogen, halogen, methyl, carboxyl, a sulfonic acid group or the alkali metal salt thereof, n is 2 or 3, R' is hydroxymethyl when n is 2 and is hydroxymethyl or methyl when n is 3, with an oxide of manganese such as manganese dioxide or manganese oxide in dilute sulfuric acid of 20 to 80 wt. % concentration at a temperature of 0.degree. to 80.degree. C. The oxidation reaction is carried out in a dispersed state for from 2 to 100 hours and the resultant aldehyde is separated from the reaction mixture by extraction with an organic solvent. The purity of the aldehyde thus obtained is higher than 85 wt. % and the yield is 40% to quantitative on the basis of 2-phenylglycosotriazole. The aldehyde can be further purified by convenient means.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for judging the purity of a purified zinc sulphate solution used for the electrolytic production of zinc, which are based on the finding that the purity of the purified electrolyte has a fixed relationship with the ratio between the amount of hydrogen gas and the amount of oxygen gas generated by electrolysis of the purified electrolyte. According to the method and apparatus, a mixture of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas generated by the electrolysis of the purified zinc sulphate solution is charged in a combustion chamber of predetermined volume and ignited by a heater to ignite the hydrogen gas, and the difference between the internal pressures of the combustion chamber before and after the combustion of the hydrogen gas is detected for measuring the hydrogen gas content in the gas mixture.
Abstract: The invention is to a method for the hydraulic mining of coal of varying hardness. It is described in particular as to coal of the type occurring in the Balmer Seam in British Columbia. By the method at least two parallel spaced entries are driven upward through a seam of coal. Monitors are positioned in each entry. Each monitor is horizontally and vertically pivotable, and has nozzle means from which a jet of water under a pressure of about 1900 - 2200 p.s.i. is emitted. The high pressure jet cuts the coal, which is then fed to a machine that breaks and crushes the coal into sizes wherein the resultant coal/water slurry will flow down a sloped flume into a dewatering station. The method further embodies differentially retreating along adjacent parallel entries by increments of desirably at least about 40 feet each.
