    Abstract: Corrosion by water of mild steel pipe is inhibited by the controlled addition of NaHCO.sub.3 to the water (containing calcium ions) in sufficient amounts to induce corrosion and form scale. The scale deposits on the pipe at the corrosion sites form a protective film thereon. The addition of the NaHCO.sub.3 is controlled by the use of corrosion electrode probes placed in the pipe.

    Abstract: Hydrolyzable cations contained in crude oil are removed from crude oil by treatment of the crude oil with an aqueous solution containing 100 to 5000 ppm of a water soluble anionic polymer containing at least 20 mole percent mer groups from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, sulfomethylated polyacrylamide, aminomethanephosphonic acid modified acrylic acid and their water soluble alkali metal and ammonium salts. By removing the hydrolyzable cations, corrosion occurring on metal surfaces in contact with the treated oil during subsequent refining is reduced.

Low molecular weight polymers of dimethylaminoethyl acrylate methyl chloride and benzyl chloride quaternary salt have good activity as reverse emulsion breakers for freeing oil tied up as a oil-in-water emulsion. The polymer reverse emulsion breakers are preferably prepared and used as aqueous solutions to obviate the need for inversion techniques and the use of hydrocarbon compatibilizers and surfactants as required for a latex polymer.

    Abstract: Disclosed are a method for inhibiting corrosion in crude oil distillation towers, an improvement in crude oil fractionation, a method for dispersing iron sulfide in a hydrocarbon stream and a hydrocarbon dispersion using the reaction product of hydrocarbyl succinic anhydride and an amine. The reaction product has a molecular weight of from 500-800, the hydrocarbyl substituent has 6-20 carbon atoms, and the amine is selected from EDA, DETA, TETA, TEPA, PEHA, AEP, piperazine, 1,2-PDA, 1,3-PDA, IBPA, MDA or HMDA. The imide product is a filming inhibitor used to treat metal surfaces subject to mineral acid corrosion and disperse iron sulfide particles by adding 3 to 24 ppm to sweet or sour crude contacting the metal surfaces.
