    Abstract: An insert for footwear which has improved durability and pliability and satisfies a thumb test of pliability when exposed along the sides of the footwear. The insert comprises a compressible core at least partially surrounded by a flexible casing. The flexible casing has an open window of a size which is sufficient for insertion of the compressible core into the flexible casing but leaving sufficient material to hold the compressible core. The peripheral portion of the flexible casing is spaced from at least a portion of the peripheral surface of the compressible core, while not interfering with the foot applying pressure to the compressible core. A method for making the insert is also provided.

    Abstract: A shoe sole and shoe are provided for offsetting a wearer's side-to-side balance to encourage a wearer's conditioning and toning. The shoe sole includes a midsole width that underlies and supports a wearer's foot, and an upper midsole portion undercut at its peripheral sidewall around the heel to define a horizontal indentation. A lower midsole portion has a corresponding “undercut” in its upper surface that angles downward and outward from the indentation. The depth of the indentation forms a balancing portion between the medially and laterally placed indentations that is narrower than the midsole width, thereby forcing the wearer to adjust one's walking gait to maintain balance over the balancing portion. A structure with a base portion can be disposed along the indentation with upward and or downward extending extensions disposed along the peripheral sidewall. The structure can include leaf springs extending transversely over a central midsole portion.

    Abstract: A pair of shoes is provided that includes a left and a right shoe. The left shoe includes an upper having a left forefoot portion, the left forefoot portion having a lateral side with a portion thereof made of a first material and a medial side with a portion thereof made of a second material. The right shoe includes an upper having a right forefoot, the right forefoot having a medial side with a portion thereof made of the first material and a lateral side with a portion thereof made of the second material, wherein one of the first material and the second material provides more support than the other. The more supportive first material can include a polyurethane, such as TPU, a non-stretch synthetic material, or ceraprene. The second, less supportable material can be a light weight breathable mesh.

The top, bottom and struts may be formed of different materials. Adjacent strut members have a C shaped cross-section facing in the same direction when the midsole resting its top or bottom portion is viewed from the side. The midsole element may further comprise a heel cleft to increase the flexibility of the sole. In a preferred embodiment, the strut members on the medial side are arranged at an angle to the strut members on the lateral side of the sole. The directional design provides flexibility and stiffness anisotropically to the sole in the longitudinal and lateral directions of the sole respectively.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a stabilizing device that helps to prevent over-pronation or over-supination and a shoe which includes such a stabilizing device. The stabilizing device is provided along a side of the midsole and preferably extends laterally between about 20% and about 35% of a width of the sole towards the opposite side thereof. The stabilizing device includes an elongated portion and a sidewall portion that extends transversely from the elongated portion. The sidewall portion forms part of an outer peripheral wall of the shoe. The sidewall portion has a stiffness which varies along the length of the stabilizing device to provide a predetermined support profile along the side of the sole. The elongated portion can also vary in stiffness along its length. The stabilizing device can be formed of a resilient material using an injection molding procedure or similar technique.

    Abstract: A form fitting closure structure and method for an internal tightening of shoe facilitated the closure system to ensure the retention of the position of the shoe wearer's foot. The system comprises (1) an outer sole which is open to allow insertion of a foot and capable of being closed over the foot by a closure system, (2) an internal sock-like tightening structure that encases the instep of the foot and is affixed to the shoe's closure system. A method of providing a better fit of the shoe around the shoe wearer's foot by ensuring the retention of the position of the foot within the shoe is also disclosed.

The shoe sole, preferably devoid of at least vertical arch sculpting, also includes a longitudinal flex groove positioned just medial of the crash pads.
