  • Patent number: 6445757
Abstract: The invention relates to a diversity combining method and to a receiver. In diversity combining, outputs (33) of a matched filter (25) of each branch are weighted with a quality estimate (32) which is generated in quality means (28b) in such a matter that the quality estimate (30) is proportional to the inverse of the interference strength (31) of the signal. The strength (31) of signal interference is generated in interference means (28c) e.g. in variance-like fashion from the differences between a reference signal (30) generated in reference signal means (28a) as the convolution of the estimated channel impulse response and the predetermined sequence and a signal received from the channel.

  • Publication number: 20020114297
Abstract: The invention relates to a data transmission method used in a CDMA-type radio system. A base station and terminal equipments exchange data at least in a packet switched mode, and a terminal equipment transmits to the base station on a random access channel a random access signal comprising at least a preamble (100) and a data part (102) multiplied by a spreading code. A predetermined set of spreading codes and signature sequences (104) are stored in the terminal equipment, and each signature sequence (104) determines one spreading code. The terminal equipment selects one signature sequence (104) by a random process from the set of signature sequences and adds the selected signature sequence (104) to the preamble (100) of the random access signal. Further, the terminal equipment uses the spreading code corresponding to the selected signature sequence (104) in the data part (102) of the random access signal.

  • Patent number: 6438377
Abstract: The invention relates to a handover method in a mobile communication system where the serving base station measures the level and/or quality of the uplink signal of a mobile station. The base station controller commands neighboring base stations to measure the level and/or quality of the uplink signal of the mobile station, when the serving base station has measured an uplink signal level and/or quality level lower than a predetermined triggering value. The base station controller performs a handover to the neighboring base station that has measured the most suitable uplink signal level and/or quality, when the serving base station has measured an uplink signal level and/or quality below a predetermined threshold value for handover.

  • Patent number: 6433737
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of improving the quality of a radio connection (170) in a cellular radio network. Relevant for the invention, the cellular radio network includes a base station system (126) and a subscriber terminal (150). A bidirectional radio connection (170) using a directional antenna beam (304) is provided between the base station system (126) and the subscriber terminal (150). In the method, in the base station system (126) an angle of incidence (302) of the directional antenna beam (304) is formed on the basis of a received radio signal (170A) transmitted by the subscriber terminal (150). The base station system (126) transmits a radio signal (170B) to the subscriber terminal (150) in the direction of an angle of departure (308) formed on the basis of the angle of incidence (302). In accordance with the invention, a ratio is formed for the imbalance between the downlink and uplink traffics.

  • Patent number: 6434392
Abstract: A method of implementing dynamic channel allocation in a cellular radio system. The cellular radio system includes, in each cell, at least one base station communicating with subscriber terminals within its area. The system includes, in one cell, at least two subeeils, which include an anrenna unit and in which all available frequencies are dynamically used. All antenna units listen to control channels that subscriber terminals use for connection set-up and a base station measures the power level of the control channels through the antenna units, on the basis of which an antenna unit providing the strongest sigxzal is selected for conricction set-up. The base station measures through the antenna units the interference level of all available traffic channels, on the basis of which that traffic channel in an antenna unit selected for connection set-up which has the least interference is selected for communication.

  • Patent number: 6430163
Abstract: A method for allocating a packet associated control channel to mobile stations in a packet radio system, particularly in a GPRS system. The sends a resource allocation request, to which a network responds by allocating to the mobile station a TFI identifier and a USF identifier. The network then sends data packets in blocks, at least some of which comprise a polling field (SIP), a polling state which indicates that the mobile station is to acknowledge received data packets on the control channel. To ensure that a mobile station receiving in downlink would not prevent the network from allocating one uplink mobile station to said channel, the allocation of the packet associated control channel is, in accordance with the invention, independent of a possible USF identifier.

  • Patent number: 6427073
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an equipment of preventing the misuse of a copied subscriber identity in a mobile communication system. The use of a subscriber identity is restricted to predetermined terminals, each having an associated equipment identity in such a way that: a number of allowable equipment identities is defined for at least one subscriber identity, and a data base linking said subscriber identities and the equipment identities allowable to them is created; the terminal sends the terminal user subscriber identity and its dedicated equipment identity to the rest of the system; the rest of the system compares whether the equipment identity sent is allowable to the subscriber identity sent; as a response to the equipment identity sent being allowable to the subscriber identity sent, the use of the terminal is permitted, and otherwise the use is denied.

  • Patent number: 6421335
Abstract: A system and method for integrating a priority-based quality of service in CDMA communication systems that implement data packet transmission, in order to effectively allocate radio resources. Data packet transfers are selectively allocated over a wireless interface operating under a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) protocol. A nominal bit rate is established for each user desiring access to the CDMA interface. A relative packet priority is calculated for each of the data packets based on an actual bit rate at the source of the CDMA interface and the established nominal bit rate. An allowable packet priority is calculated for the CDMA interface based on a signal-to-noise ratio of the CDMA interface, and those of the data packets having a relative packet priority greater than or equal to the allowable packet priority of the CDMA interface are transmitted across the CDMA interface.

  • Patent number: 6418175
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for determining the strength of co-channel signals, and a receiver utilizing the method. The training sequences of the signals to be received are classified into subsets, and a channel estimate related to the signal is formed by comparing the training sequences of the received signal to the training sequences of the subset signals. By means of the channel estimate, a strength estimate is formed for each received signal, the estimate being used to arrange the received signals according to their strength. When the signal strengths are known, it is possible to decrease the effect of the interference signals on the signal to be detected. In a diversity receiver, a correlation result can be formed of the channel estimates of the signals of each subset, excluding the signal to be detected, the result being used in interference elimination.

  • Patent number: 6418197
Abstract: A telecommunication network exchange and method of playing an announcement to a call party in a telephone exchange during connection set-up. The invention is based on the idea of totally separating the detection of the need for an announcement from playing the announcement. The need for the announcement is detected in a conventional manner at a given stage of call set-up. However, the exchange does not play the announcement immediately, but delays playing it up to a later stage of call set-up or up to a later event, if necessary. The announcement may be played, for example, not until collection of additional dialing is definitely terminated, the call is confirmed to be successful, the announcement is confirmed to be necessary/correct, and so on. As a consequence of the delayed playing of the announcement, wrong and unnecessary announcements and the failure of the call are thus avoided.
