Abstract: The invention relates to a method of improving the quality of a radio connection (170) in a cellular radio network. Relevant for the invention, the cellular radio network includes a base station system (126) and a subscriber terminal (150). A bidirectional radio connection (170) using a directional antenna beam (304) is provided between the base station system (126) and the subscriber terminal (150). In the method, in the base station system (126) an angle of incidence (302) of the directional antenna beam (304) is formed on the basis of a received radio signal (170A) transmitted by the subscriber terminal (150). The base station system (126) transmits a radio signal (170B) to the subscriber terminal (150) in the direction of an angle of departure (308) formed on the basis of the angle of incidence (302). In accordance with the invention, a ratio is formed for the imbalance between the downlink and uplink traffics.

  • Patent number: 6292793
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of handling event recordings in a service database system. The database comprises measurement tables (MT) which include consecutive rows (Ri). A single row comprises data about a single measurement object. So that correct counter values can be recorded efficiently, the counters on the measurement table row have been duplicated, and in every recording interval the counter values of a given counter group on said row are incremented, and the counter values of another given counter group on said row are recorded according to a predefined rotation principle. In the system, measurement object-specific and measurement group-specific time stamps are maintained, on the basis of which it is tested whether the counter values are acceptable for recording.

  • Patent number: 6292670
Abstract: In a method for maintaining a group call in a mobile communication system, a mobile station is registered to a first base station and starts a group call. A traffic channel is reserved by the first base station for the group call, and the mobile station changes over to communicating on the traffic channel reserved from the first base station. To ensure an uninterrupted group call, a ‘follow me’ function is activated for the group call. In response to activating the ‘follow me’ function for the group call and reservation of a traffic channel by the first base station for the group call, a traffic channel is reserved from each of the desired second base station adjacent to the first base station for the group call. When some of the mobile stations participating in the group call change over to using a second base station adjacent to the first base station, the mobile station changes over to communicating on the traffic channel reserved from the base station for the group call.

  • Patent number: 6292661
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of implementing a handover in a cellular radio system. The cellular radio system has at least on cell (Cd) which comprises at least two subcells and in which all available frequencies are dynamically used. The cellular radio system comprises in each cell (C, Cd) at least one base station (BTS) which communicates with subscriber terminals (MS) located within its area. A handover from an old cell to a new cell (Cd) applying dynamic channel allocation is characterized in that only BCCH carrier frequency time slots comprising control channels are transmitted all the time in all subcells of the cell(Cd). The method allows traffic channels of a BCCH carrier frequency to be dynamically reused in subcells of the cell (Cd), providing the improved system capacity.

  • Patent number: 6289005
Abstract: A method of directional radio communication and mobile communication network between a first station and a second mobile consists of the following steps. Consecutive bursts of communication data transmitted from the second station are identified at the first station. Respective beam directions from which sequential communication data bursts are received by the first station are determined from a plurality of adjacent beam directions. One or more of the beam directions are selected for transmission of signals from the first station to the second station so that when it is determined that the sequential communication data bursts are received by the first station from two different beam directions, the two different beam directions are simultaneously selected for transmission of the signal from the first station to the second station.

  • Patent number: 6285884
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and arrangement for making a handover decision in a mobile communication system of multilayer radio coverage, which comprises measuring at a mobile station (MS) a radio signal transmitted by a base station (BTS) of a microcell, and reporting the measurement results at substantially regular intervals. The invention is characterized by determining a relative speed for the mobile station on the basis of the number and classification of the measurement results received at substantially regular intervals. Mobile stations moving at a speed slower than the relative speed are defined as slow moving and commanded to register in the base station of a suitable microcell (A, B, C).

  • Patent number: 6282185
Abstract: The invention relates to a transmitting and receiving method and a radio system. In a transmitter the signals to be transmitted are spread coded in means and modulated by subcarriers in means. In a receiver (R) the signals are demodulated in means and submitted to multiuser detection in means by using the subcarriers to limit the number of detectable signals in the means. The receiver uses multiuser detection for reducing multiple access interference and correcting frequency-selective fading.

  • Patent number: 6278688
Abstract: The present invention relates to a procedure for ensuring the operation of signalling channels in a V5 interface between a local exchange (LE) and an access node (AN). The interface includes at least two links (L), in conjunction with redefinition of the interface composition. Redefinition generally involves making changes in the V5 interface data, such as the location of signalling channels on the links. According to the invention, the operation of protected channels in conjunction with restarting is ensured by starting the protected channels on the channels defined for them in the new composition and on the channels to which they were transferred in conjunction with the protection switch-over.

  • Patent number: 6278865
Abstract: A method of measuring the frequency difference between a tuning frequency and a transmission frequency is provided. The method includes generating temporally successive estimated impulse responses and comparing the mutual temporal shift of the impulse responses in relation to one another. Additionally, the method includes generating a phase shift between the impulse responses corresponding to the comparison and forming a frequency difference between the transmission frequency and the tuning frequency corresponding to the phase shift. As the estimated impulse responses are generated in succession at given intervals and as the signal is being sampled at a given sampling frequency, the phase shift is generated corresponding to the highest correlation value. The frequency difference between the transmission frequency and the tuning frequency is formed as the ratio of the product of the phase shift and the tuning frequency to the product of the measurement interval and the sampling frequency.

  • Patent number: 6272348
Abstract: The idea of the invention is to allocate channels within a predetermined group of cells with a dynamic channel allocation method and to equalize interference caused to the cell group by connections outside the cell group e.g. through frequency or time slot hopping. Cell groups may be superimposed and they may be formed e.g. by the cells of an office system or a broad-coverage mobile communications system, by the cells of a mobile communications network of two different operators, by the cells of a network according to two different systems or by the cells of a network operated by one operator. If the cell groups are formed of cells in one network, a suitable size may be chosen for the cell group so that the computing and signalling load required by centralized dynamic channel allocation in the cell group will remain easily controllable.

  • Publication number: 20010011331
Abstract: In fault-tolerant systems it is known to write data into two separate disk drives. It is also known to duplex computers so that when one computer fails, the other computer can continue operating. In such a system, the active unit usually controls both disk drives. It is also known to cache in the main memory of the computer the most recently used areas in the disk drive, since it is likely that these areas (e.g. directories) must be read again soon. A problem occurs when using duplexed computers each of which is to be provided with a possibility of using the disk drive (14, 24) while the operation is expedited by caching in the main memories of the computers (10, 20). If one computer modifies the data in the disk drive, the other computer is not necessarily aware of this, but it uses the outdated data in its memory. According to the invention, the computer (10) desiring to control the disk drive (14) reserves it for itself. If the reservation is successful, a disk talk is performed.
