  • Patent number: 6370520
Abstract: A system and method for determining the minimum and/or maximum values from a number of sample parameter values utilizes a table of last occurrence (TOLO-table), together with a sliding window or filter, to greatly enhance the speed and efficiency when determining the minimum and/or maximum value from a number of sample parameter values that fall within the sliding window. The TOLO-table typically includes a parameter column for storing entries for each one of a limited number of discrete parameter values, and also includes a time stamp column which provides entries for storing time of receipt data associated with each parameter value defined in the parameter column. Alternatively, an order number column may be employed for storing number order entries corresponding to the order in which the parameter values are received. Every time a parameter value is received, the time stamp or order number entry associated with the parameter value is updated to the current time or order number.

  • Patent number: 6366777
Abstract: A method and equipment for using two SIM cards with the same MSISDN number in a mobile communication system. To at least one subscriber identifier are allocated at least two identity modules (SIM), of which only one at a time can be registered as active. In connection with location updating it is checked whether the location updating relates to a subscriber identifier to which at least two identity modules (SIM) have been allocated. If yes, it is checked whether the identity module (SIM) concerned is at that particular moment registered as passive, and if yes, it is activated 3and the identity module (SIM) earlier registered as active is deactivated. If the identity module (SIM) earlier registered as active is involved in an on-going call while location updating is being performed using an identity module (SIM) earlier registered as passive, the location updating is rejected or delayed until the on-going call has been terminated.

  • Patent number: 6366774
Abstract: A method and apparatus for monitoring the battery capacity of the battery backup system and for compensating the RF output power to increase the service availability of the cellular base station. The present invention provides compensation of RF output power when the battery back-up system is in use for a cellular base station. By monitoring the battery capacity and power consumption of the cellular base station, the RF output power can be compensated. This compensation in RF output power will increase the time that the cellular base station can operate within the battery backup mode. This therefore increases the cellular base station service availability and does not allow for any loss of network operator income.

  • Patent number: 6366602
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of generating a carrier wave of common channels and a radio system. The radio system comprises a network part, subscriber terminals and a bidirectional transmission path between the network part and the subscriber terminal. The bidirectional transmission path consists of frames to be transmitted at a carrier wave frequency. A frame comprises time slots. To a time slot is applied a channel, the channel being either a common channel (FCCH, SCH, BCCH, CCCH) or a dedicated channel (TCH). The carrier wave is generated by adjusting transmission powers of time slots and by using frequency hopping to the effect that first there is transmitted at least one time slot containing a common channel (FCCH, SCH, BCCH, CCCH), with a predetermined reference power. Then, other time slots are transmitted with a transmission power lower than the reference power, and using frequency hopping.

  • Publication number: 20020034951
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for load control and a radio system. In the invention a load result describing the load is cell-specifically formed. The load result is formed either by comparing a signal strength of desired signals and a combined total strength of interferences and the desired signals or by weighting a signal-to-interference ratio with a bandwidth or a data transmission rate. The load result is compared with a threshold value of the highest load level allowed of a cell. The data transmission rate in the cell is increased if the load result is smaller than the threshold value. The data transmission rate in the cell is reduced and the establishment of new connections is avoided if the load result exceeds the threshold value. In heavy load situations a signal-to-interference objective is also changed in order to balance the load result.

  • Patent number: 6359867
Abstract: According to the invention, a pilot signal 4 is transmitted from a base station on each available carrier. This is done for each available carrier and in every time slot of the carrier irrespective of whether or not a useful signal is transmitted in the time slot. The pilot signal contains a limited quantity of information concerning the base station, such as information about the radio interface. The information is time slot synchronized so that the same information is transmitted in every time slot. The pilot signal level varies, and in time slots which are in traffic use it is suitably lower than the level of the useful signal 1 proper, but in idle time slots it has a very low static level. It has the same band width Df as the normal useful signal. However, it is coded in a different way than the useful signal and in such a way that although it almost drowns in noise, it can still be extracted from the noise.

  • Patent number: 6356759
Abstract: In a packet radio system (e.g. a GPRS), a network (BSS) has two different alternatives for allocating a radio resource to a mobile station (MS). In a first allocation alternative the radio resource is allocated using an uplink counter block identifier (USF) transmitted with downlink blocks. In a second allocation alternative the radio resource is allocated in a separate signalling message. A corresponding downlink block then also has an uplink counter block identifier (USF) which can acquire only a limited number of possible values. If all identifiers (USF) are allocated to different mobile stations, allocation alternative 2 cannot be used. In the invention the network leaves at least one identifier (USF) unallocated to any mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6356750
Abstract: The invention relates to identifying a TRAU frame in a mobile telephone system. A subscriber terminal normally transmits to a network part a speech frame to be placed in the TRAU frame, and when using discontinuous transmission, the subscriber terminal transmits to the network part a SID frame to be placed in the TRAU frame. A TRAU frame is currently identified in the network part on the basis of the sum of summed up SID code word bits as a speech frame, a SID frame or a SID frame corrupted on the radio path. In accordance with the invention, in addition to the SID code word bits, the other TRAU frame bits that normally contain speech, except for the SID parameter bits representing background noise, are summed up in the sum. Instead of the previously used 95 bits, 210 bits are used. The invention is preferably implemented by software changes in a channel codec.

  • Patent number: 6351470
Abstract: The invention relates to an interworking function apparatus (IWF), a method and an arrangement for establishing a mobile-terminating call in a mobile communications network when the call is received from a calling party via a fixed network without any signalling support which provides information on the protocol employed by the calling party. In the invention, a service is assigned only one directory number, which is common to all the protocols employed by the service. The protocol identifier in a service definition linked with this directory number has a neutral (undefined) value or may be interpreted as neutral. The IWF, upon receiving the neutral RA parameter (Step 2), is switched onto the line and monitors a traffic channel received from the fixed network in order to identify the protocol employed by the calling terminal equipment (Steps 54-57). After identifying the protocol, the IWF is configured according to the identified protocol (Steps 58-60 or 61-63), and data transfer may begin (Step 64).
