Abstract: An RF transceiver having dual-mode envelope restoration architecture. In narrow-band applications such as GSM/EDGE, a switch-mode amplifier is used to provide an envelope signal for amplitude modulating the phase-modulated signals. To achieve required modulation bandwidth in wide-band applications such as WDCMA, an analog amplifier is used to provide the envelope signal. Furthermore, in the wide-band mode, the envelope modulation is applied through the base of an emitter follower while the collector voltage is scaled to achieve a desired power output in the amplitude-modulated signals.
Abstract: An integrated RF front-end module for use in a communications device, such as a mobile phone. The RF front-end module is made from a laminated structure consisting of a plurality of layers. At least one of the layers is used to embed RF electronics. Microvias are disposed in various layers of the laminated structure so as to provide electrical connections to the embedded RF electronics. Two electrically conductive layers are provided on both sides of the laminated structure for shielding the RF components against electromagnetic interference. An antenna has one or two radiating elements disposed on one or both sides of the laminated structures for conveying RF signals to and from the RF electronics. The antenna can be fine-tuned and the operational frequency range of the antenna can also be changed.
Abstract: The invention relates to controlling of characteristics of radiation patterns in wireless telecommunications system, where radiation patterns are provided by antenna arrays, each antenna array comprising at least two independent antenna units, each antenna unit being associated with an antenna-unit-specific antenna signal. A control circuit for controlling the characteristics of radiation patterns comprises an antenna signal amplitude adjuster for adjusting a relative amplitude of at least two antenna-unit-specific antenna signals as a function of a phase shift between at least two radio frequency signals inputted into the antenna signal amplitude adjuster. The circuit further comprises an adjustable phase shifter for adjusting the phase shift between the at least two radio frequency signals inputted into the antenna signal amplitude adjuster.
Abstract: An animal data gathering device comprise: a radio transmitter and receiver, a processor for controlling the operation of the device, and memory for storing, information including a first unique identifier associated with the device, wherein the processor is arranged to transmit a signal, by means of the radio transmitter, and to receive, by means of the radio receiver, one or more signals, each representing a second unique identifier from other devices and the processor is arranged to store in the memory each second unique identifier. Thus a record is kept of all radio devices with which the device has come into radio contact.

Abstract: A method for performing video motion estimation in video encoding, in which a video signal consists of frames comprising blocks. In the method a combined comparison value is calculated between a current video block of a frame to be encoded and at least one other video block of another frame. The current video block of the frame to be encoded comprises a set of first data values, and the at least one other video block of another frame comprises a set of second data values. Data value pairs are formed of data values from the set of first data values and equal number of corresponding data values from the set of second data values. The combined comparison value is formed by defining comparison values, each of which is defined by using data values of one data value pair of the data value pairs. Further, at least one threshold value is defined, and it is determined whether the process for defining the combined comparison value can be terminated.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and a radio system for transmitting a digital signal. The method comprises the following steps: the transmitter transmits at least a part of the signal via at least two different transmit antenna paths; the transmitter weights the transmit power of the signals to be transmitted via the different transmit antenna paths with respect to one another by means of changeable weighting coefficients determined for each transmit antenna path; the receiver receives the signal.
Abstract: An apparatus and method, in a data network to compress headers of packets that carry media information having an RTP TS which cannot be linearly extrapolated from the RTP SN.
Abstract: A broadcast network 1 is described in which to improve network efficiency and quality of service, a particular transmitter 11a within the network 1 is selected to transmit content to a particular, preferably mobile terminal 3. The selection of the transmitter 11a is carried out by reference to information available in a second network 27, the user of the terminal 3 having a further terminal 12 connected to the second network 27 and either integrated with or in close proximity to their mobile terminal 3.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a balanced circuit arrangement and methods for linearizing and calibrating such a circuit arrangement, wherein linearization is obtained by introducing a load imbalance between the output branches of the balanced circuit arrangement. Thus, a controllable extraneous imbalance is created between the output loads of the balanced circuit arrangement to thereby obtain a linearization by means of even-order non-linearity.
Abstract: The invention relates to a direct conversion receiver and a method in a direct conversion receiver for processing received radio signals that are modulated and centered at a carrier frequency, the modulation extending a sideband above and below the carrier frequency. The method comprises the steps of mixing a local oscillator frequency signal with said received radio signals for generating baseband frequency signals; filtering out generated disturbing direct current (DC) components of said baseband signals centered at the zero frequency; setting said local oscillator frequency signal equal to or about the carrier frequency plus an offset frequency, said offset frequency being equal to the difference between the carrier frequency and a null frequency, said null frequency centered at a notch of said sideband; and centering said notch at the zero frequency of said baseband signals through mixing. The invention relates particularly to suppression of DC offsets generated in the receivers.
Abstract: A method, mobile device and computer program product are provided for automatically determining the frequencies of one or more radio stations available in the location in which a user (and, therefore, his or her mobile device) is located and presetting those frequencies to the mobile device. In addition, a means by which the user can automatically continue listening to the same radio station (e.g., KISS FM) using a different radio frequency channel associated with that station, as he or she travels and the radio frequency channel to which he or she is currently tuned becomes weak is also provided.
Abstract: In exemplary embodiments of this invention context transfers (static and dynamic) are optimally performed to maintain the same quality of service (QoS) for a Mobile Station (MS) during a CDMA inter-BS hard handoff, as well as during a CDMA inter-BS soft handoff. Context transfers (static and dynamic) are also optimally performed to maintain the same QoS for the MS during a CDMA inter-Packet Control Function (PCF) hard handoff.
Abstract: A system for displaying an image captured by a sensor array reduces physical movement of the camera. The system includes means for displaying an image corresponding to an output from a plurality of sensors within a first area of a sensor array and means for changing the image displayed by translating the first area within the sensor array as by changing the grouping of the sensors whose image data is displayed.
Abstract: A method is disclosed to operate a spread spectrum receiver with an active set of base stations. The method includes monitoring a current serving base station of the active set with a Set Searcher and simultaneously monitoring individual ones of remaining base stations of the active set with a C/I (carrier-to-interference ratio) Searcher. One of the remaining base stations is designated as a Candidate base station for potentially replacing the current serving base station and is monitored continuously by a first set of fingers of the C/I Searcher. The other remaining ones of the base stations of the active set are monitored in a time multiplexed manner by a second set of fingers of the C/I Searcher.
