Abstract: An arrangement for saving energy in a radio device transmitter and a radio device. The steady currents of the transmitter amplifiers are made dependent on the transmitting power for reducing the losses of the amplifiers. The VGA (400) comprises at least one main differential pair (Q41-Q42; Q43-Q44) for controlling the gain and a bias differential pair (Q47-Q48) for controlling said steady currents. These pairs are steered by the one and the same voltage (&Dgr;V), in which case the output current (Ib1; Ib2) of the bias differential pair changes in the same way as the output current (io1; io2) of the main differential pair when the gain is readjusted. The output current of the bias differential pair is used as a bias current of the transmitter amplifiers, i.e. as a current that determines the steady currents of the amplifiers.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and to devices for determining in a positioning system the time of reception of a beacon signal which was received and tracked by a receiver. In order to enable a re-acquisition of the system time based on a noisy received signal, it is proposed that the method comprises as a first step reconstructing a beacon signal for an interval based on available information. Then, a cross-correlation is performed between the reconstructed signal and the received signal at different relative positions to each other. Next, the time of transmission of the received signal is determined based on information for the reconstructed signal and on the relative position resulting in the maximum correlation value. Finally, a time of reception of said received signal is determined as the sum of the determined time of transmission of the received signal and of a calculated time of flight of the received signal.
Abstract: A voltage-controlled oscillator includes a resonator circuit and a voltage source. The resonator circuit includes a capacitive circuit that has a plurality of analog voltage controlled capacitive elements coupled to one another. The voltage source is coupled to the resonator circuit and provides a voltage to the plurality of analog voltage controlled capacitive elements. Each of the plurality of analog voltage controlled capacitive elements is activated as a function of the voltage thereby increasing linearity of a frequency tuning voltage parameter of the resonator.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for supplying reference data that is to be used in a mobile station of a radio communications network for a frequency update of the frequency used by the mobile station, which reference data is based on bursts received by the mobile station from a base station of said radio communications system. In order to allow for an improved supply of reference data to an automatic frequency correction algorithm, it is proposed that the method comprises determining the signal-to-noise-ratio of all bursts received unless they were discarded by some selection process; and providing at least some of the bursts for which a signal-to-noise-ratio greater than a predetermined value was determined as basis for the reference data to be used for the frequency update. The invention equally relates to a mobile station, a module and a radio communications system comprising the corresponding means.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for processing a traffic channel request in a cellular radio system. To ensure that the allocation of a new traffic channel would not disturb adjacent cells, the method comprises the steps of: calculating the number of traffic channels in use in a radio cell; measuring the quality of ongoing connections of adjacent cells using at least to some extent the same frequency channels as said radio cell; and preventing the traffic channel from being allocated to a mobile station from said radio cell if the number of traffic channels in use exceeds a predetermined threshold value and if in any of said adjacent cells the mean value of quality for ongoing connections is lower than a predetermined minimum quality value.

Abstract: A delay lock loop (DLL) circuit, and an associated method, for a receiver. The delay lock loop circuit is selectably operable in an acquisition mode and a tracking mode. A selector selects operating parameters of elements of the delay lock loop circuit to cause operation of the circuit alternately in the acquisition mode and the tracking mode. Through appropriate selection of the operating parameters, a selected one of the operating modes is effectuated. The delay lock loop circuit is amplitude-independent, operable irrespective of the values of the input signals applied thereto.
Abstract: A method for operating a mobile station includes steps of (A) operating an RF transmitter power detector to obtain an output signal that is indicative of a magnitude of RF power transmitted by the mobile station; (B) processing the output signal to determine a time-varying characteristic of the output signal; and (C) determining a value of the Adjacent Channel Power Ratio (ACPR) from the time-varying characteristic. A further step uses the determined value of the ACPR to control a DC bias current, and therefore the output power capability, of a transmitter amplifier.
Abstract: In the GSM and similar systems, USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) transfer takes place on a fast channel if a mobile station is involved in that call, and otherwise on a slow channel. The USSD transfer can be switched to the fast channel by determining the amount of data to be transmitted. If the amount of data to be transmitted is likely to exceed a predetermined threshold, and if the mobile station is not involved in a call, a call attempt is initiated for switching the USSD transfer to the fast channel.
Abstract: Test circuitry for a transceiver is described which allows tests to be conducted on a transmission loop without requiring decoding by rake fingers. According to one embodiment, a receiver for receiving a test signal includes a detecting circuit set up in accordance with a test spreading code for detecting whether or not signals received by the receiver include the test signal incorporating the test spreading code. In the embodiment, a matched filter set up according to the test spreading code is utilized as the detecting circuit. According to another embodiment, circuitry for adjusting the power level of a test signal is described in which power control information is transferred between first and second storage locations at the transceiver to allow otherwise normal control circuits to implement the power control.
Abstract: A method, and associated apparatus, facilitates handover of communications with a mobile Bluetooth device operable to communicate packet data with other Bluetooth devices. Handover of communications is effectuated between fixed-infrastructure access points or other mobile Bluetooth devices formed in a scatternet. The device to which communications are to be handed-over becomes a slave to the Bluetooth device with which communications are ongoing, thereby to permit time synchronization thereto.

Abstract: A communications system and method for dynamically creating at least one pinhole in a firewall are provided. The communications system includes a protected node capable of initiating a communication session with an outside node. In this regard, the protected node is capable of receiving flow parameters regarding the communication session as the communication session is setup. The system also includes a firewall disposed along a communications path between the protected node and the outside node. The protected node is capable of sending at least a portion of the flow parameters to a firewall-controlled proxy, which in turn, is capable of forwarding the portion of the flow parameters to the firewall. Thereafter, the firewall is capable of creating at least one pinhole based upon the portion of the flow parameters to thereby permit the transmission of information between the outside node and the protected node during the communication session.

Abstract: A film layer for a mobile station that allows the appearance of the mobile station to be easily changed. The layer is thin enough to allow it to be positioned between the plungers on a plunger mat and the keys on a key mat of the mobile station. Flexibility of the film layer allows a key press to be transmitted through the film insert to one of the plungers, which in turn compresses a contact on a printed wiring board. Flexibility may be due to perforations around the keys of the key mat. Preferably, the film layer includes some visually detectable characteristic, such as a color, that is visible through openings or translucent portions of the key mat. The film layer may be constructed of various materials, such as paper, elastomer, polymer or electric luminescent materials which can be interchangeably inserted into the mobile station to change its appearance.
