  • Patent number: 6661782
Abstract: The invention relates to a cellular packet radio. network and to a method for updating a routing area in a packet radio network. Packet radio support nodes (SGSN) are connected to a digital cellular radio network (BSS), which provides a radio interface for the support nodes for packet-switched data transmission between the support nodes and mobile stations. There is a logical link between a mobile station (MS) and a serving packet radio support node (SGSN). The packet radio network utilizes logical routing areas, each of which comprises one or more cells. Each cell broadcasts information on the routing area to which it belongs. The mobile station sends a routing area update request to the packet radio network when it roams to a new cell which belongs to a different routing area than the old cell. The update request includes the identifiers of the old and new routing area.

  • Patent number: 6661293
Abstract: The invention relates to the locking of a phase-locked loop when the frequency setting (an) of the loop is changed. The locking speed of the loop is improved at the expense of noise characteristics so that these are momentarily degraded. When changing the frequency, the difference between the new frequency set for the VCO (430) and the actual frequency (fVCO) is measured and the VCO is immediately controlled according to this difference. To that end, counters (441, 444) dividing a reference frequency (fref) and the VCO frequency are made to simultaneously start counting from zero. Thus the length of the pulse issued by a phase difference detector (410) corresponds to the said frequency difference. After the setting of the new frequency value the loop filter (420) is turned into a purely capacitive circuit the output voltage (vc) of which changes proportionally to the length of the pulse from the phase difference detector.

  • Publication number: 20030224813
Abstract: A method of adjusting downlink transmission power at a base station based on the measured SIR relative to a referenced level in a mobile terminal. The referenced level can be the targeted SIR or zero. When the measured SIR is greater than the referenced level, the measured SIR is further compared to a first threshold value in order to determine the step size for power reduction. When the measured SIR is smaller than the referenced level, the measured SIR is further compared to a second threshold value in order to determine the step size for power increase. The first and second threshold values can be derived from the target SIR and TPC step size as provided in the RRC signal. Furthermore, the step values and threshold can be based on statistical analysis while the system is running.

  • Publication number: 20030223426
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for handling a request by a first communication device 11 connected to a network of a communication system to establish a packet switched session with a second, wireless communication device 12, which session requires the second communication device 12 to be connected to a network which enables the establishment of the session. In order to enable an enhanced handling of such a request, it is proposed that it is first determined whether the second communication device 12 is currently connected to such a network. In case it is determined that the second device 12 is not connected to such a network, a corresponding indication is transmitted to the first device 11. The user of the first device 11 is then informed via the first device 11 that the requested session cannot be established. The invention relates equally to a communication system enabling such a method and to corresponding elements 11, 13 of such a system.
