Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for controlling radio frequency (RF) levels in wireless communications devices, such as embedded modems, while optimizing performance of the wireless communications devices. Controlling RF levels is achieved by adjusting transmitted power levels of an embedded modem based upon a type or model of host device that the embedded modem is operatively connected to. By tailoring output power levels to specific host devices, regulations related to limiting RF exposure, such as specific absorption rate (SAR) or maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits, may be met without unduly affecting performance of the wireless communications devices.
Abstract: A receiver includes a pre-correlation filter that forms an image of the average chip shape of a received signal over a specified period of time. The filter includes an array of complex accumulation registers that accumulate measurements that are associated with signal samples from specific ranges of locations, or code chip phase angles, along a spread-spectrum chip. Using the accumulated measurements, the receiver estimates the location of the chip transitions in a direct path signal component. The receiver may thereafter change the starting point, size and number of ranges, such that the accumulation registers accumulate more detail from the chip edges. The receiver in addition may compare the accumulated measurements with a reference pulse shape to determine if any interference is present in the received transmission that will distort ranging information calculated from the received signal.
Abstract: A Universal Serial Bus (USB) modem/Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) device is provided that when connected to a host device, presents itself as an Ethernet endpoint to the host device, without requiring additional software/drivers to be downloaded to the host device. Embedded in the USB modem/WWAN device are various modules that provide functionality allowing either automatic connection to the Internet or redirection to a local Web User Interface (UI) that a user may employ to configure the USB modem/WWAN device and/or manually connect to the Internet. Additionally, the USB modem/WWAN device employs predetermined rules to determine whether or not/how the redirection occurs, including in scenarios where wireless connectivity to the Internet is unavailable.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide for methods and apparatus for fragmenting a single message and sending the message fragments over multiple independent networks to a single receiving unit. The receiving unit then reassembles the message fragments to generate the original message. One embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention is a wireless radio frequency modem that can both receive and transmit fragmented messages over multiple independent networks.

Abstract: A system and method for provisioning wireless devices such that they are only capable of accessing network services when in a specified location. A device surveys the current location of the device for existing base stations and stores a corresponding network environment profile. After the profile is stored, network services will only be provided to the device if the current network profile matches the stored profile.
Abstract: A global positioning system includes a base GNSS receiver that determines position and carrier phase measurements for GNSS satellites in view and a rover GNSS receiver, which is a single frequency receiver that captures GNSS satellite signals transmitted in the single frequency band during a capture window from a plurality of GNSS satellites, the plurality being large enough to provide a carrier phase data set from which a solution to associated integer carrier phase ambiguities is over determined. The system determining from the captured signals, a search space associated with the satellites in view, the code phase delays and associated position uncertainty. The system resolving the integer carrier cycle ambiguities using double difference carrier phase measurements associated with signal power values that are over a predetermined threshold value.
Abstract: A method for management of Internet Protocol (IP) traffic comprises (a) receiving an uplink data packet associated with a connection of a plurality of connections; (b) assigning a weight to the uplink data packet; (c) updating a debt associated with the connection based on the weight assigned to the uplink data packet; (d) prioritizing the connections based on the debt associated with each of the one or more connections; and (e) processing packets in the one or more connections based on the prioritizing.
Abstract: A system and method for seamlessly increasing download throughput in a wireless wide area network (WWAN) device is herein disclosed. Remote file servers frequently impose per connection transfer limits upon host devices that are requesting files for download. In order to bypass these limitations, a WWAN device acting as a proxy server can replace a single file request with a series of independent requests over multiple connections, each requesting a separate portion of the original file. The blocks of requested data can then be reassembled at the WWAN device before being transferred to the device requesting the file. A user of the requesting device can therefore benefit from increased download rates, yet without having to download or install any additional software within the requesting device.

Abstract: A method of secure communication between a wireless device and a target network is presented, comprising receiving a communication addressed to a target network, the communication comprising a data payload and originating from a wireless device on a trusted wireless network, establishing a virtual private network (VPN) session with the target network and sending the communication to the target network over the secure channel. The method can further comprise negotiating secure channel parameters with the target network, encrypting the data payload, adding data integrity protection to the communication, encapsulating the communication according to a VPN protocol, authenticating the wireless device as an authorized user of the private network and granting access to a target network resource.
Abstract: A device behavior modification apparatus is provided to detect insertion of an external antenna into a portable communication device, and identify the external antenna as being either, e.g., a valid, FCC-approved external antenna or an invalid external antenna. The apparatus may determine whether or not an internal antenna is being utilized and/or has been substituted with the inserted external antenna. Depending on the type of external antenna inserted, the apparatus may react and effectuate changes to the operation of the portable communication device and/or the external antenna. Such behavior modification may include, e.g., reducing the RF signal power output or disabling the radio portion of the portable communication device altogether. Additionally, the apparatus may receive certain augmentative information to notify the apparatus or allow the apparatus to determine the region within which it is operating.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided to prevent or mitigate noise interference resulting from the operation of a memory device, such as a microSD card that is operating in proximity to a radio of a communications device. Noise interference is managed by shifting the rate at which the microSD card is accessed so that the resulting noise does not match or interfere with the particular radio channel(s) being utilized by radio at the time of the microSD card access. That is, a determination/knowledge of the radio receive channels being utilized can be leveraged to intelligently control the clock frequency of the microSD card, such that the harmonics of the microSD card clock do not result in interfering noise at the particular radio receive frequencies.
