  • Patent number: 10713132
Abstract: In one embodiment, a system for migrating virtual machines in a virtualization environment includes a plurality of host machines implementing the virtualization environment and a migration controller. Each of the host machines includes a hypervisor, one or more user virtual machines (UVMs) and a virtual machine controller. The system further implements a virtual disk comprising a plurality of storage devices, the virtual disk being accessible by the virtual machine controllers, which conduct I/O transactions with the virtual disk. The migration controller determines a segment size and, for each host machine, determines a number of required segments for the UVMs running on the host machine. The controller computes a number of reserved segments based on a total number of host machines and a largest one of the numbers of required segments. The reserved segments are then assigned among the plurality of host machines.

  • Patent number: 10698780
Abstract: Systems for distributed data storage. A method commences upon accessing a set of data items that describe computing nodes to be organized into a ring topology. The ring topology and distributed data storage policies are characterized by quantitative failure-resilient characteristics such as a replication factor. Various characteristics of the topology serve to bound two or more availability domains of the ring into which the computing nodes can be mapped. A set of quantitative values pertaining to respective quantitative failure-resilient characteristics are used for enumerating candidate ring topologies where the computing nodes are mapped into the availability domains. Using the quantitative failure-resilient characteristics, alternative candidate ring topologies are evaluated so as to determine a configuration score for candidate ring topologies. A candidate ring topology is configured based on a computed configuration score surpassing a threshold score.

  • Patent number: 10698823
Abstract: A method and apparatus for using cache size estimations for guiding hot-tier insertion decisions. The method and apparatus include an adaptive management element that determines what accesses of a resource should be logged and the parameters for logging. The determinations are used to configure an adaptive logging element to log only accesses corresponding to the selected resource(s) and to log only those accesses that match the identified parameters. The adaptive management element operates in a feedback loop: first determining what will be logged and second implementing that determination by an adaptive logging element. Upon a triggering event, the process returns to the first determination based on any then current parameters. In some embodiments, the parameters include a size estimate to achieve a given target hit rate (target hit rate size estimate) that is used in generating a score or weighting to identify the highest/best scoring/weighted disk(s) for logging.

  • Patent number: 10700991
Abstract: Entries in individual portions of a network map serve to establish inter-cluster routes that are formed from routing data structures at individual clusters, which routing data structures store connection parameters pertaining to access point nodes in a multi-cluster computing environment. Upon receiving a resource management request at one of the access points, the request parameters are used in combination with the network map to identify at least one target access point having a virtual machine for responding to the resource management request. The resource management request is routed to a next hop access point node on route(s) to target access points. If the next hop access point node is not the node to respond to the resource management request, then processing at the next hop node serves to route the resource management request to a further next hop access point node on a route to the target access point.

Abstract: Systems for distributed resource system management. A first computing system operates in a first computing environment. A predictive model is trained in the first computing environment to form a trained resource performance predictive model that comprises a set of trained model parameters to capture at least computing and storage IO parameters that are responsive to execution of one or more workloads that consume computing and storage resources in the first computing environment. When the trained resource performance predictive model is deployed to a second computing environment, various computing system configuration differences, and/or workload differences and/or other differences between the first computing environment and the second computing environment are detected and measured.

  • Patent number: 10691481
Abstract: A system and method include determining underprovisioning of a guest physical memory of a virtual machine running on a computing node. The node includes hardware resources that are mapped the guest physical memory by a hypervisor. The hypervisor receives page fault information from the virtual machine based on page faults in the virtual machine. The hypervisor generates a table that includes virtual memory address-process indicator pair entries and corresponding page fault numbers. The hypervisor removes those entries that have a corresponding page fault number that is less than a first threshold value. The hypervisor determines a size of a revolving memory based on the number of remaining entries and a page size of the guest physical memory. If the revolving memory size is less than a second threshold value in relation to the allocated size of the guest physical memory, the hypervisor indicates underprovisioning of the guest physical memory.

  • Patent number: 10684879
Abstract: An improved architecture is provided which enables significant convergence of the components of a system to implement virtualization. The infrastructure is VM-aware, and permits scaled out converged storage provisioning to allow storage on a per-VM basis, while identifying I/O coming from each VM. The current approach can scale out from a few nodes to a large number of nodes. In addition, the inventive approach has ground-up integration with all types of storage, including solid-state drives. The architecture of the invention provides high availability against any type of failure, including disk or node failures. In addition, the invention provides high performance by making I/O access local, leveraging solid-state drives and employing a series of patent-pending performance optimizations.
