Patent number: 6375770Abstract: An apparatus (21, 221, 231) for forming a butt seam (33, 233, 354) between opposed edges (32, 33, 231, 232) of resiliently compressible, fully cured, elastomeric, fabric sheets (28, 29, 228, 229, 351, 352), such as foamed neoprene for wet suits and dry suits. In some embodiments (21, 221) the apparatus includes fabric manipulating assembly (23, 223) which continuously compresses the sheets proximate and inwardly of the edges, preferably by a roller assembly (26, 27, 226, 227), to firmly press the opposed edges of the flexible and compressible sheets (28, 29, 228, 229) tightly together during movement and bonding along the seam (33, 233). The apparatus (21, 221, 331) preferably includes adhesive activation device in the form of an ultrasonic transducer (24, 222, 322) which contacts the neoprene pieces to activate a dry neoprene cement carried on the edges of the fabric pieces.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1997Date of Patent: April 23, 2002Assignee: O'Neill, Inc.Inventors: Mark J. Patent number: 6164441Abstract: A device for cleansing skin having a container made from a flexible polymeric sheet with an opening in its top, a self-resealing flap positioned on the container top, a stack of non-woven cleansing cloths placed within the container, and an insulator positioned under the stack of cleansing cloths. The flap is constructed from a laminated polyolefin composite, exhibits memory, and reseals itself against the container after being opened. The insulator is sized and shaped so that it may be easily handled with automated machinery, but is designed to enhance the heat retention capabilities of the device. The cloths in the stack of cloths are folded in a manner that facilitates their removal from the container and are impregnated with a cleansing solution that is pH balanced and exhibits a low incidence of allergic reactions.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: Guy & O'Neill, Inc.Inventors: Michael G. Patent number: 5913592Abstract: A water sport boot (10) having an upper (12), a resiliently compressible sole pad (14), a stretchable heel cup (16), an adjustable strap (18), an achilles panel (20), toe box foxing (22), and an elastic leg band (92). Heel cup (16) and adjustable strap (18) cooperate to seal off the heel and ankle region of the upper in order to prevent water from entering the instep region (26) of upper (12). Sole pad (14) is made of a relatively thin, resiliently compressible material that easily and quickly conforms to the contour of the surface being stepped on in order to provide good tactile sensation. Sole pad (14) also has a corrugated rib pattern on its exterior underside to increase traction.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 1997Date of Patent: June 22, 1999Assignee: O'Neill, Inc.Inventor: Bruce Yin Moore

Patent number: 5898934Abstract: A neck-entry wetsuit (10) with a closure loop panel (54), a collar panel (60), zipper panels (36, 38) and a back panel (26). Collar panel (60) forms an outer neck opening (80) with a cut out region that allows the outer neck opening to expand. Back panel (26) is form to ride against a person's back and itself forms part of an inner neck opening that expands to allow entry into and out of the wetsuit.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1998Date of Patent: May 4, 1999Assignee: O'Neill, Inc.Inventors: John D. Hunter, Bruce Y. Moore

Patent number: 5896578Abstract: A wetsuit (10) having an upper trunk portion (14), a lower trunk portion (12), and a neck region (16) including a neck opening (30). A closure panel (34) seals a V-shaped cut out region (38) that forms part of neck opening (30). Hooks (54) and loops (57) secure closure panel (34) in its closed position. In its open position, closure panel (34) substantially enlarges neck opening (30) to permit entry into and exit from the wetsuit through the neck opening. V-shaped cut out region (38) is limited to the upper trunk portion (14) and a double lined neoprene panel (45) is secured below the apex (43) of the V-neck opening. The double lined neoprene panel (45) acts as a stress disperser, in order to minimize wear and tear at the apex (43).Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1997Date of Patent: April 27, 1999Assignee: O'Neill, Inc.Inventors: John D. Patent number: 5693177Abstract: An apparatus for forming a butt seam between opposed edges of resiliently compressible fabric sheets, such as foamed neoprene for wet suits and dry suits. The apparatus includes fabric manipulating assembly which continuously compresses the sheets proximate and inwardly of the edges, preferably by a roller assembly, to form opposed shoulders or areas that will permit the application of a lateral force to firmly press the opposed edges of the flexible and compressible sheets tightly together during movement and bonding along the seam. The apparatus preferably includes adhesive activation means in the form of an ultrasonic transducer which contacts the neoprene pieces in advance of compression rollers to activate a dry neoprene cement carried on the edges of the fabric pieces. A method for forming the butt seam is described, as are alternatively adhesive activating assemblies and a seamed neoprene fabric sheet.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1994Date of Patent: December 2, 1997Assignee: O'Neill, Inc.Inventors: Mark J. Meltzer, Tommas J. Tompkins

Patent number: 5052053Abstract: An aquatic garment, such as a wet suit or dry suit formed of a water-impervious material having a thickness dimension sufficient to provide thermal insulation for a user during aquatic activities. The garment includes stretch areas having an array of grooves with a depth dimension sufficient to significantly increase the elasticity of the garment transverse to the grooves while maintaining the mechanical integrity and thermal insulation in the stretch area. Variation in the elasticity and in the direction or orientation of enhanced elasticity can be achieved by varying the spacing and direction along which the grooves extend. A method for formation of grooved aquatic garments to enhance their stretchability also is disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1990Date of Patent: October 1, 1991Assignee: O'Neill, Inc.Inventors: Stephen Peart, Bradford D.
