  • Patent number: 4075066
Abstract: The present invention provides an ammonia-free acid zinc plating bath for electrodepositing bright zinc on a substrate in which the zinc deposit produced thereby is ductile and presents a glossy to bright coating on the substrate over a wide cathodic current density range. The ammonia-free acid zinc plating baths of the invention comprise zinc ions, chloride ions, at least one polyoxyalkylated naphthol, at least one aromatic carboxylic acid or bath-soluble salt thereof, and at least one anionic aromatic sulfonic acid or bath-soluble salt thereof. In addition to the above components, the ammonia-free acid zinc plating baths of the invention may contain at least one nonionic polyoxyethylene compound and at least one aromatic aldehyde, ketone, or mixtures thereof. The ammonia-free acid zinc plating baths of the invention are free from significant amounts of complexing agents that would impede the removal of zinc ions from the baths prior to disposal.

  • Patent number: 4074602
Abstract: A defecting or cut off saw inludes a support for boards and a transversely movable rotating saw blade for cutting the boards to length or cutting away defects therein. The transverse movement of the saw blade is controlled by an electrical circuit, the operation of which is acutated by the simultaneous depression of a pair of spaced cycle switches. The control circuit includes a timing circuit permitting movement of the saw across a board only when both of the cycle switches have been operator actuated within a predetermined period of time of one another. The circuit provides infinite stroke control for returning the saw blade to its start position at any time when one of the cycle switches is released.

  • Patent number: 4073419
Abstract: A spool of thread, such as dental floss, is housed in a two-part shell or holder, preferably made of plastic. The floor on the bottom one of the shell parts includes a platform to provide a bearing surface for enabling rotation of the spool with a minimum of friction. The top of the upper shell part includes at least one finger which depends far enough to drag, with predetermined friction, against the top of the spool. This friction is sufficient to prevent a random unwinding of the spool and yet small enough to preclude any substantial impedance to the withdrawal of a desired amount of thread from the spool.

  • Patent number: 4072089
Abstract: Apparatus for forming a seal between layers of a carton of thermoplastic coated paperboard material and the like wherein the thermoplastic material in the area to be sealed serves as the sealant and is activated to flow by frictional heat generated by a vibration welding horn and is then allowed to cool and set under pressure to form the seal between the layers. The carton first moves to an activating station wherein the layers to be sealed are engaged on opposite surfaces by a vibrating horn and a back-up means for a time sufficient to activate the thermoplastic material to flow. The carton is then carried to one or more clamping and sealing stations at a different location from the activating station with the thermoplastic material in the activated state. The layers to be sealed with the activated thermoplastic is then engaged on opposite surfaces by a pressure pad and a back-up means for a predetermined period of time to permit the activated thermoplastic to cool and set and form a seal.

  • Patent number: 4072300
Abstract: A cut-off device for a horizontally moving continuous casting includes a carriage assembly carrying a cut-off torch mechanism and a clamping mechanism. The assembly is mounted for reciprocable movement on a rod-like track which is open-ended to permit fast removal of the assembly for repairs. When the assembly is clamped to the moving casting, it is carried along therewith while the torch cuts through the casting to form billets of desired length. The track is floatingly mounted to permit deviation from the vertical by the casting without adversely affecting the cutting operation. The carriage assembly is tiltable on the track to permit horizontal deviation of the clamped casting. The torch is operated by a cam having a drop-off portion which quickly returns the torch to starting position. Upon release of the clamping mechanism, a damped counter-weight automatically returns the carriage assembly to its initial position on the track.

  • Patent number: RE29568
Abstract: Carton sealing apparatus for sealing a rectangular end closure of a thermoplastic coated paperboard carton by ultrasonic vibrations. The apparatus includes an anvil, or backup member, and an ultrasonic vibrating tool. The mandrel is received in the carton with the end closure to be sealed folded against the smooth end surface thereof. The ultrasonic vibrating tool engages the end closure on the opposite side thereof from the mandrel, and, when energized, generates heat sufficient to cause the thermoplastic coating of the paperboard to flow and weld the layers of the end closure together. Ribs project from the end surface of the vibrating tool to provide a sealing pattern of "bow-tie" configuration, the ribs having various heights with respect to the end surface of the vibrating tool to accommodate changes in the number of layers of paperboard at the different areas on the end closure.
