Patent number: 3955448Abstract: A cutting tool made of a material having a high red hardness for the continuous machining of metals and having a geometry determined by the change in measurements of a sample of the metal being machined when the sample is externally loaded to failure. The sample is subjected to a tensile load to produce the failure. Elongation and neck down are caused in the failure area according to the ductility of the metal. The effective cutting or rake angle of the cutting tool is established as a function of the elongation and neck down of the sample. The relief angles of the cutting tool geometry are determined to maintain a self-sharpening cutting edge under the abrasive characteristics of the workpiece material and erosion characterisitcs of the cutting tool material for given machining conditions. The effective rake angle of the cutting tool is also established as the minimum angle producing chips of maximum hardness during the machining operation.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1974Date of Patent: May 11, 1976Assignee: O'Fallon Investment CompanyInventor: William L. Patent number: 3945236Abstract: A flat metal plate is first formed into a suitable segment of a large generally spherical body. It is then properly positioned on a horizontal cradle and its edges cut vertically as if from infinity, i.e. so that they are all parallel. A cutter then traverses the pre-cut edge to form the proper contour for welding. The pre-cut edge itself forms an accurate fixed reference and cooperates with guides on the face of the curved plate to keep the axis of the milling cutter tool substantially perpendicular to the surface of the plate at the point of milling contact. When all segments are so made and then joined, the resultant generally spherical body will be within substantially closer tolerances.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1974Date of Patent: March 23, 1976Assignee: C-R-O Engineering Co., Inc.Inventor: Harry Hooper

Patent number: 3943478Abstract: An adjustable bimetal snap disc thermostat is disclosed in which a leaf spring acts at its center to apply a force to a bimetal snap disc to alter the operating temperature thereof. The force of the spring applied to the disc is adjusted by an operating member which simultaneously moves both ends of the spring with respect to its center. The operating member is located on the side of the thermostat switch remote from the disc and is provided with projections which extend around opposite sides of the switch to the spring. With this structural arrangement, small adjustment travels are required for a given adjusting spring and the thermostat is constructed in a compact manner, which is symmetrical about the center axis of the device.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1974Date of Patent: March 9, 1976Assignee: Therm-O-Disc IncorporatedInventor: Donald E. Patent number: 3943480Abstract: A multiple bimetallic snap disc thermostat is disclosed in which two series connected switch mechanisms are respectively operated by two concentric bimetal snap discs having the same diameter. One snap disc is thermally automatic in operation to open and close its associated switch upon reaching its calibration temperatures. The outer disc is a one-shot disc which does not automatically reset and cannot be manually reset after operation. The two discs are mounted in a single, disc retaining cup, and are spaced by a ring positioned between their peripheries. This allows said discs to be formed of the same size and provides easy mounting. A single fixed contact member provides the fixed contact for both switches. The contacts of the switch associated with the automatic disc are capable of repeated operation whereas the contacts of the switch associated with the one-shot disc are not structured for repeated cycling.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1974Date of Patent: March 9, 1976Assignee: Therm-O-Disc IncorporatedInventor: Donald J. Schmitt

Patent number: 3940646Abstract: A single-phase induction motor provides a plurality of serially connected main winding coils and a plurality of corresponding auxiliary winding coils each spaced in quadrature from a corresponding main winding coil. Each auxiliary winding coil is energized by the current induced in a serially connected pick-up coil located within a stator slot containing the quadrature main winding coil in response to the energization of the main winding coil for providing a starting torque to the rotor. Each auxiliary coil contains a first predetermined number of turns wound in a first direction within one stator slot and a second predetermined number of turns wound in a second direction located in an adjacent stator slot for increasing the resistance-to-reactance ratio. Each pick-up coil contains approximately one-half the turns of each auxiliary coil which, in turn, has a substantially lesser number of turns than each main coil.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1974Date of Patent: February 24, 1976Assignee: A.
