  • Patent number: 6387219
Abstract: An extended-nip press device comprises a press shoe extending in a cross-machine direction and a support for supporting the press shoe. Between the shoe and the support are arranged a plurality of loading cylinders for moving the shoe toward a backing member such as a counter roll to apply pressure to a fibrous web passing through the nip between the shoe and counter roll. Each loading cylinder comprises a first cylinder member fixed on the shoe and a second cylinder member fixed on the support, and a connecting member that slidably engages both cylinder members. The connecting member can slide relative to the first cylinder member with a first stroke length L1 that is smaller than the stroke length L2 between the connecting member and the second cylinder member. Accordingly, the connecting member can remain essentially aligned along the lengthening direction of the loading cylinder.

  • Patent number: 6375602
Abstract: The bone-hard supercalender roll of the present invention comprises: an elongate shaft having a longitudinal axis; a core layer formed of fibrous material circumferentially covering the shaft; means for compressing the core layer along the shaft longitudinal axis; an intermediate layer circumferentially covering the core layer that comprises a first polymeric resin and a heavy textile material; and an outer layer circumferentially covering the intermediate layer that comprises a second polymeric resin and a reinforcing material. In this configuration, the roll can provide the requisite bone-hard surface for calendering applications, but can do so without the surface denting and marring problems associated with filled rolls and the expense of rolls formed of covered metal cores.

  • Patent number: 6372091
Abstract: A method and apparatus for beginning the formation of a paper web on a traveling forming wire, or between a pair of converging forming wires, includes a headbox on a papermaking machine for projecting a stock stream onto the forming wire, or between the forming wires over the porous face surface of a forming shoe. The forming wire or wires are looped to travel in a continuous path, and within at least one of the looped forming wires is the forming shoe, which is porous by way of grooves or openings over at least a portion of its face surface. The grooves are in the surface of the forming shoe which engages the inner surface of the looped forming wire to define a portion of the path of travel of the forming wire adjacent the headbox from which the stock stream is projected onto, or between, the forming wire(s). The grooves extend in the surface facing the forming wire from a point downstream of the leading edge in the nose portion of the face surface of forming shoe in the direction of forming wire travel.

  • Patent number: 6368455
Abstract: This invention pertains to security paper and methods of making such security paper. The invention comprises a light-colored base paper having a non-protection area of a first thickness, and a protection area of a second thickness on at least one major surface of the base paper wherein the first thickness is greater than the second thickness. The base paper comprises colorant whereby the protection area exhibits a translucence when viewed using transmitted light, and exhibits the colorant as a darker color indication, relative to the non-protection area, when viewed using reflected light. Transmission of light through a combination of paper fibers and the colorant of the invention, both being disposed at the protection area, is discernibly different from transmission of light through the non-protection areas of the base paper, when viewed with a human eye.

  • Patent number: 6365004
Abstract: A method and apparatus effect drying of a paper web using a plurality of heated drying cylinders and at least one air impingement module having a hood. The paper web is brought into operative contact with the heated drying cylinders, and at least one of the final moisture content, quality, and cross-direction profile of the paper web is regulated. The regulation is effected by adjusting the efficiency of air impingement drying of the paper web, by adjusting at least one of the blowing velocity of the medium (typically air) blown against the paper web, the humidity of the blowing medium, and the distance of the hood of the impingement module from the paper web. At least one of the final moisture content of the paper web and its quality may also be regulated by adjusting the steam pressure of one or more drying cylinder groups.

  • Patent number: 6358366
Abstract: A system and method effectively threading the moist tail of a web through a pulp dryer. A tail threading belt in a closed loop passes the tail of the web through the dryer, and the most tail of the web is transferred from a support wire in the press section of a pulp machine to the tail threading belt. Transfer may be effected using a suction roll with a suction sector and a blower sector, or by using a suction chamber having a perforated escort belt which cooperates with it to engage the tail section on the wire and fully support it during transfer to the threading belt. The threading belt may be folded over to contain the tail web inside it while it passes through the dryer.
