  • Patent number: 8867335
Abstract: A system and method for fault isolation in a packet switching network, wherein a network element may be categorized as faulty when the network element is identified as a point-of-congestion in the network. One such system can be broadly summarized by a representative communication system that incorporates a fault isolating element to monitor multiple network elements. The fault isolating element includes components such as a database of data flow paths that exist in the plurality of network elements, a data gathering element that is configured to collect performance information related to one or more network elements, and an analyzer element that uses the performance information collected by the data gathering element to identify one or more network elements as points of congestion.

  • Patent number: 8279969
Abstract: One embodiment comprises a transmitter precoder operating on an input signal to produce an output signal for modulation. The output signal is transmitted using a constellation with a constellation density. The transmitter precoder comprises scaler logic, precoder logic and selection logic. The scaler logic scales the input signal to maintain constant power on the input signal independent of the constellation density. The precoder logic precodes the scaled signal to produce a dither signal limited to a range of values. The range is inversely proportional to the constellation density. The selection logic is operable in two states. In the first state, the selection logic combines the scaled signal with the dither signal to produce the output signal. In the second state, the selection provides the scaled signal as the output signal.

  • Patent number: 7969900
Abstract: Systems and methods for testing network performance and communicating network device information are disclosed. The preferred embodiments of the present invention enhance the standard ICMP echo or ping protocol, while still maintaining backward compatibility. Furthermore, the network performance testing can be based on different qualities of service or types of service. This allows the network testing to be useful in real-time applications such as voice and/or video.

  • Patent number: 7936689
Abstract: A system and method for the measurement of communication network performance over a secondary communication channel sends an inquiry signal containing information pertaining to network performance from a near end communication device to a far end communication device. From the inquiry signal the far end communication device can determine the number of packets of information lost through the network. Once received the inquiry signal, a reply signal with additional information is sent to the near end communication device. The near end communication device receives the reply signal and can determine therefrom various network performance parameters.

  • Patent number: 7558203
Abstract: The power budgeter controls the rate of data flow in a transceiver. The power budgeter monitors transceiver activity (data flow) during a predefined period, and limits transceiver data transmit and receive rates during times when the aggregate transceiver activity would otherwise exceed a predefined threshold. If total data flow during the monitored time period exceeds the threshold, data flow through the transceiver during the next (second) time period is limited. Data flow rates are limited in a transceiver by shutting off the transceiver (receiver and/or transmitter) for a specified portion of the second time period. In other types of transceivers, the transmitter and/or receiver may be forced into a low-power idle state or similar operating condition for a specified portion of the second predefined time period.

  • Patent number: 7430212
Abstract: A system and method of the present invention improves data transmission speeds by fixing the lower corner frequency at a frequency above voice band in a symmetric DSL transmission system. By using a fixed lower corner frequency that is above the voiceband and increasing the upper corner frequency upward as the symbol rate increases, the communication equipment systems utilize symmetric frequency plans that incorporate the relatively low loss, low crosstalk spectrum range while still being able to operate on the same line as analog voice band. Another aspect of the present invention is directed to multiplexing a first modem for communicating information packets between the first modem and a plurality of second modems via a single two-wire (e.g. telephone subscriber) lines. The present invention provides a Multi-Access (MA) protocol that enables a single link to be utilized by more than one access device (e.g., a CPE Modem).

  • Patent number: 7418048
Abstract: A tone ordered discrete multitone interleaver system and method, including a tone ordered interleaver and deinterleaver, are provided for efficiently communicating data despite noise affecting a Discrete Multitone modulation (DMT) system. The tone ordered discrete multitone interleaver forces interleaving of trellis encoded information by assigning a different number of bits to adjacent tones or adjacent tone pairs.

  • Patent number: 7408882
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for automatic discovery of network addresses. Briefly described, in architecture, one embodiment of the apparatus, among others, comprises: an announcer logic; a listener logic; and a forwarder logic. The announcer logic is configured to transmit a node address and a forward counter associated with each known node in a list, if the forward counter is greater than zero, to all nodes in the list having a static type. The listener logic is configured to receive an announcement packet and to add to the list of known nodes at least one new node. The node address and the forward counter of the new node correspond to the announcement packet, and the new node has a discovered type. The forwarder logic is configured to transmit the node address and the forward counter associated with the new node, if the forward counter is greater than zero, to all known nodes in the list.

  • Patent number: 7352803
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for communicating data over a subscriber loop using a modem. One such method includes: transmitting data on the loop in a first frequency band; sensing an indication that simultaneous transmission on the loop in a POTS frequency band is imminent; and adjusting transmit power in the first band, in response to the sensing step. One such system includes an input/output connection in communication with the loop, a processor operable in at least two states, a means for sensing demand for simultaneous usage of the loop, and a means for controlling the state. The first state is characterized by a first transmit power spectrum in the first band. The second state is characterized by a second transmit power spectrum in the first band, reduced relative to the first spectrum. Upon sensing demand, the control means causes the processor to operate in the second state.
