  • Patent number: 7055088
Abstract: Several embodiments of an interleaved generalized convolutional encoder system and method are provided for communicating data over a transmission path in order to inhibit distortion caused by impulse noise or other correlated noise and enhance transmission rate of data communications. The encoder system is designed to introduce a variable delay to the convolutional encoder. The variable delay effectively spreads correlated noise over a variable number of symbols in time. Correlated noise that is spread over time allows for better error correction encoding.

  • Patent number: 7054377
Abstract: Several embodiments of a space diversity trellis interleaver system are provided for communicating data over a plurality of separate communication paths in order to inhibit distortion caused by impulse noise or other correlated noise and enhance the data transmission rate of data communications. The transmitter is designed to receive a plurality of data streams from data terminal equipment (DTE), which can be one or more devices. One or more convolutional encoders, preferably trellis encoders, encode each of the data streams. In an alternative embodiment, more than one trellis encoder is used to trellis encode each data stream. Data segments from the convolutionally encoded data streams are interleaved with a switch. The plurality of interleaved convolutionally encoded data streams are modulated and transmitted onto a respective plurality of separate communication paths. At the receiver, the plurality of data streams is received from the separate communication paths and demodulated.

  • Patent number: 7046798
Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for transmitting a data-bearing signal and a non-data-bearing signal. One embodiment comprises communicatively coupling a data-bearing signal during a first time period and communicatively coupling a non-data-bearing signal during a second time period. The data-bearing signal has a first PSD. The non-data-bearing signal has a second PSD substantially the same as the first over a range of frequencies. The non-data-bearing signal has characteristics facilitating echo cancellation. Another embodiment comprises a line interface and a transmitter coupled to the line interface, comprising a data encoder and a periodic signal generator. The encoder is configured to produce a data-bearing signal with a first PSD. The periodic signal generator is configured to produce a non-data-bearing signal with a second PSD. The second PSD is substantially the same as the first PSD over a first range of frequencies.

  • Patent number: 7039015
Abstract: A data delivery analysis report is generated by collecting various network performance parameters from a plurality of communication devices connected to a communication network. Logic located at a network management system collects and presents the network performance information to a network administrator in a graphical format such that the network administrator may determine whether reduced network performance is attributable to the network or to the traffic characteristics of a particular network user.

  • Patent number: 7035380
Abstract: The present invention provides for a system and method for blocking leakage signals and uncoupling connections in a communication system. A leakage signal (LS) blocking splitter employs a high-pass filter which effectively blocks the lower frequency leakage signal. The high-pass filter (an LS filter) has a cut-off frequency selected to fall between the upper range of the leakage signal (which is approximately 4 KHz in the preferred embodiment) and the low-end frequency of a data signal. A detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to which each one of the leakage signal (LS) filters are coupled to. The detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to ensure that each LS blocking splitter is coupled to an in-service communication connection.

  • Patent number: 6993067
Abstract: Fractional bit rate encoding in a pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) communication environment allows the transmission of fractional bit rates, thus maximizing the use of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) available on a communication channel. The invention allows the transmission of fractional bit rates in a PAM transceiver, thus allowing the encoding and transmission of a fractional number of bits on each PAM transmit symbol. By encoding a non-integer number of bits, a non power-of-two number of PAM levels can be encoded.

  • Patent number: 6970501
Abstract: The present invention provides a communication device, such as a modem, that is capable of detecting whether it is capable of operating in a mode that is compatible with one or more of the Spectrum Management Classes. • Patent number: 6950444
Abstract: A method and system for robust delimiting of transmitted messages in switched-carrier operation in which a preamble precedes each communication message with the preamble comprising symbols transmitted at a rate lower than that of the following data. The lower rate symbols of the preamble significantly increase the probability that the decoder will decode the preamble symbols error free. Communication line control information can be included in the robust preamble, thereby ensuring that line control information is reliably transferred over the communication channel. The first symbol of the preamble can be transmitted at the lower symbol rate and at an increased power level, thereby clearly and reliably delimiting the beginning of a transmission. The end of the communication message can be reliably delimited by sending the first symbol containing only bits from a next cell of information at a lower symbol rate and including an extra bit in that symbol.

  • Patent number: 6912575
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for using tolerances obtained from a user together with historical information about a communication network to analyze the network's performance and to calculate and recommend a specific change to the committed information rate (CIR) over a given frame relay permanent virtual circuit (PVC). The historical information, which is collected by a network management system connected to at least two communication devices in a communication network, relates to various performance parameters, which may include the total data transmitted, received and dropped above and within the original CIR, and the burstiness of the data. The historical information is automatically analyzed in view of the user's designated tolerances to determine the network's data transmission performance, and a forward-looking recommendation of an optimum CIR is made, based on the analysis. The results of the analysis and the recommended change to the CIR are displayed to the user in a graphical format.

  • Publication number: 20050135247
Abstract: The power budgeter controls the rate of data flow in a transceiver. The power budgeter monitors transceiver activity (data flow) during a predefined period, and limits transceiver data transmit and receive rates during times when the aggregate transceiver activity would otherwise exceed a predefined threshold. If total data flow during the monitored time period exceeds the threshold, data flow through the transceiver during the next (second) time period is limited. Data flow rates are limited in a transceiver by shutting off the transceiver (receiver and/or transmitter) for a specified portion of the second time period. In other types of transceivers, the transmitter and/or receiver may be forced into a low-power idle state or similar operating condition for a specified portion of the second predefined time period.

  • Patent number: 6891896
Abstract: The invention enables a communication device to efficiently communicate large circular signal constellations by embedding a square signal constellation in each of the circular signal constellation points. By embedding a square signal constellation in the error free slicing region associated with each circular constellation signal point, the beneficial shape of the circular constellation is retained while significantly increasing the amount of information that can be transmitted in each constellation. The invention allows the communication of high bit-per-symbol signal constellations (on the order of 15 or more bits-per-symbol) without the added cost of external memory for large look-up tables or the cost and power consumption of line drivers required to communicate high peak factor square signal constellations.
