Abstract: A method of driving a lamp that uses a DC to AC inverter that is connected to a primary winding of a transformer is disclosed. The inverter frequency is variable, and in one embodiment, may be controlled by a voltage controlled oscillator. Circuitry is included that monitors the phase relationship between a voltage across a secondary of the transformer and a current through the primary of the transformer. The circuitry monitors the phase relationship and adjusts the inverter frequency, such as by adjusting voltage controlled oscillator, so that the phase relationship is maintained at a predetermined relationship.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for converting DC power to AC and for driving multiple discharge lamps and, more particularly, Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs), External Electrode Fluorescent Lamps (EEFLs), and Flat Fluorescent Lamps (FFLs). Disclosed methods, among other advantages, allow accurate current sharing among the lamps, minimization of the total number of power switches, and, in general, simplification of the complexity of the control system.
Abstract: The method and circuit of the present invention provides short-circuit detection and protection in a discharge lamp system. The transformer's primary current is sensed and used to provide short-circuit protection of the secondary winding side or high voltage side. The system and method with the present invention provides short-circuit detection and protection even when the transformer's secondary winding is shorted.
Abstract: The present invention introduces methods to modify the burst frequency of an inverter in a given LCD panel without any component change on the inverter board. The present invention also introduces methods to adjust the setting of a sensing system for duty cycles and accept Display Power Saving Technology (DPST) input signals with different frequencies. The universal inverter module with the present invention can be applied for different DPST technologies.
Abstract: Two out-of-phase inverters are used for driving a backlight for large LCD panels. The lamp currents of each inverter are regulated to substantially the same level to ensure the same brightness in the lamps without any current balancing devices. The switching frequencies in both inverters are synchronized and maintained in an out-of-phase condition during operation.
Abstract: An auxiliary power system is provided for a vehicle having a frame with two longitudinal beams, in which the system includes an auxiliary power unit (APU) mounted on a support frame that is pivotably mounted to the vehicle frame to permit pivoting in a vertical plane. The support frame further includes The support frame further includes a suspension system at an intermediate location between the pivot mount and the APU to help isolate the APU from the effects of road vibration. The APU itself is mounted on rollers so that the APU can be slid out of its housing for access and/or removal. The housing door is configured to provide a rolling surface onto which the APU can be moved when the door is open. The APU includes an engine exhaust heat exchanger that scavenges engine heat to heat the vehicle. A rotating cleaning auger is mounted within the heat exchanger to clean the surfaces of debris left by the engine exhaust gases.
Abstract: A self-healing power grid control system includes a power grid having a plurality of network islands with a plurality of linear and non-linear loads. A plurality of control sensors communicate with the power grid to monitor the electrical characteristics of the power grid. A plurality of controlled relays are in electrical communication with the plurality of non-linear loads. A battery energy storage system (ESS) is in electrical communication with a main power source and a network island. A first restoration controller is in electrical communication with the control sensors, the controlled relays, and with the battery ESS. The first restoration controller receives control signals from the control sensors, and in response to detecting an irregularity in the power grid, automatically actuates the battery ESS to stabilize power to the linear loads, and disconnects selected controlled relays to disconnect power to a calculated percentage of the non-linear loads.

Abstract: There are many inventions described and illustrated herein. In one aspect, the present invention is directed to a portable fuel cell power and management system (for example, hydrogen and/or methanol based systems), components and/or elements thereof, as well as techniques for controlling and/or operating such systems. The fuel cell power management system (and method of controlling and/or operating same) actively monitors, manages and/or controls one or more operating parameter(s) of the fuel cell system. For example, the system monitors, manages and/or controls the consumption and/or the rate of consumption of fuel by the system, and in response thereto, may provide and/or alert the user to amount of fuel remaining, consumed, the rate of consumption and/or the time (or estimation thereof) remaining until all of the fuel is spent. In this way, the user may schedule or plan accordingly.

Abstract: The present invention introduces methods and systems to amplify digital audio signals for driving speakers. First, digital audio signals are converted to PWM audio signals by a liner PWM modulator that is open-loop. Then, PWM audio signals are amplified by a Class D audio amplifier that has at least one feedback loop.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for testing a container as to leakage and defects. The apparatus is especially useful for testing plastic bottles because it does not contact one or more of the bottle sides during testing. A frame with the test components may be adjusted so that the apparatus will fit many different conveyor configurations and container sizes. A container is moved along by a conveyor, where it is sensed by a photo-eye to initiate testing. The test probe makes contact with the container opening, and travels with the container during testing. The test probe introduces air into the container and detects the maximum pressure and pressure decay. If the pressures are not within an acceptable range, the container is ejected from the conveyor.
