Abstract: Coated articles demonstrating anti-fouling properties are provided, comprising: (a) a substrate comprising sapphire; (b) an adhesion promoting layer applied to the substrate; and (c) a top layer comprising at least an anti-fouling coating applied to the adhesion promoting layer. The adhesion promoting layer is formed from a curable sol-gel composition and has a dry film thickness less than 1000 nm after curing. The present invention also provides a method of forming a coated article comprising: (a) applying a curable film-forming sol-gel composition on a sapphire substrate, to form a coated substrate with a sol-gel adhesion promoting layer having a dry film thickness less than 1000 nm after curing; (b) subjecting the coated substrate to a temperature of at least 500° C. to effect cure of the sol-gel composition; and (c) applying at least an anti-fouling coating on the adhesion promoting layer to form a multi-layer, coated article.
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of preparing an alkoxy silane functional ionic liquid comprising reacting a halogenated compound comprising a halogen and an active hydrogen functional group, an isocyanato functional alkoxy silane, and an ionizable compound capable forming an ionic bond with the halogen to form the alkoxy silane functional ionic liquid. The present invention is also directed to alkoxy silane functional ionic liquids.

Abstract: A system for monitoring performance of an aircraft windshield includes a sensor comprising a sensory contact and an evaluation unit. The sensory contact is in physical contact with one or more components of the windshield, and generates a signal representative of the performance of the component(s) of the windshield. An electrical connector is secured to the surface of the windshield facing the interior of the aircraft. The signal from the sensory contact passes through the connector to the evaluation unit. The evaluation unit acts on the signal to determine the performance of the component(s) of the windshield, wherein the evaluation unit is spaced from and out of physical contact with the windshield and the electrical connector, and is in electrical contact with the electrical connector.

Abstract: An alkoxysilane functionalized polysiloxane polymer can be prepared from a mixture of reactants including: a) a polysiloxane polymer having two or more reactive functional groups selected from -A-NH2, -A-OH, -A-N?C?O, -A-COOH, or combinations thereof; and b) at least one alkoxysilane having a functional group that is reactive with the reactive functional groups on the polysiloxane polymer. Abstract: A process for producing an article by three-dimensional printing includes applying a 1,1-di-activated vinyl compound-containing liquid binder over a predetermined area of a layer of solid particles. The liquid binder infiltrates gaps between the solid particles to form a first cross-sectional layer of an article, and the 1,1-di-activated vinyl compound reacts to solidify the liquid binder and bind the solid particles in the first cross-sectional layer of the article. Also provided is an article produced by the three-dimensional printing process, set forth herein.
