Abstract: Mixers for adhesives and sealants that include automatic stroke length adjustment for different sizes and configurations of adhesive and sealant cartridges are disclosed. The mixers include a sensor for detecting when a mixing impeller reaches the top of a cartridge and the bottom of a cartridge, which sends a signal to a main pressure cylinder to reverse direction. The stroke length of the mixer is automatically adjusted without the necessity of manual selection based upon a particular cartridge size.
Abstract: Actinic radiation-curable compositions containing polythiols and urethane/urea-containing polyalkenyl prepolymers that can be used for aerospace coatings and sealants. The coatings can be applied to surfaces and rapidly cured.

Abstract: A corrosion resistant pretreatment composition for coating a metal substrate is provided. The composition comprises an aqueous carrier, one or more Group IA metal ions, wherein at least one of the Group 1A metal ions comprises a lithium compound, a hydroxide; and a phosphate or a halide. A process for treating a metal substrate with a lithium based coating is also provided, as well as a process for treating a metal substrate with a non-chrome conversion coating process.
Abstract: Controlled release polyurea microcapsules can be prepared from a combination of polyisocyanates using emulsion polymerization. Encapsulated catalysts prepared using the polyurea microcapsules can be used to control the cure rate of coatings and sealants.
Abstract: Disclosed are methods for making a cured sealant. The methods include depositing an uncured sealant composition on a substrate and exposing the uncured sealant composition to actinic radiation to provide a cured sealant. The uncured sealant composition includes a thiol-terminated polythioether, a polyene comprising a polyvinyl ether and/or a polyallyl compound, and a hydroxy-functional vinyl ether. Abstract: A solar reflective coating composition includes: a film-forming resin; a plurality of near-IR transparent pigments dispersed in the film-forming resin, the plurality of near-IR transparent pigments including a first perylene pigment and a second perylene pigment different from the first perylene pigment; and a near-IR reflective pigment dispersed in the film-forming resin, the near-IR reflective pigment different from the first perylene pigment and the second perylene pigment. When formed into a cured coating over a substrate, the cured coating exhibits an off-white or grey color. The solar reflective coating composition is substantially free of carbon black. The present invention is also directed to a substrate having a surface at least partially coated with a solar reflective coating composition and a method of preparing a low weight aerospace component.

Abstract: Sealant cap assemblies comprise a cap shell having an interior volume and a recess adjacent to a bottom opening thereof, a sealant barrier ring at least partially inserted in the recess in the cap shell, and sealant located radially outside the sealant barrier ring adjacent to the bottom opening of the cap shell. The sealant barrier ring may retract into the recess in the cap shell. The sealant may be uncured or partially cured, and is prevented from flowing inside the barrier ring when the sealant cap assemblies are installed on fasteners. Methods of making and using such seal cap assemblies are disclosed. Fasteners sealed by such sealant cap assemblies are also disclosed.

Abstract: Methods for treating a substrate are disclosed. The substrate is deoxidized and then immersed in an electrodepositable pretreatment composition comprising a lanthanide series element and/or a Group IIIB metal, an oxidizing agent, and a metal-complexing agent to deposit a coating from the electrodepositable pretreatment composition onto a surface of the substrate. Optionally, the electrodepositable pretreatment composition may comprise a surfactant. A coating from a spontaneously depositable pretreatment composition comprising a Group IIIB and/or Group IVB metal may be deposited on the substrate surface prior to electrodepositing a coating from the electrodepositable pretreatment composition. Following electrodeposition of the electrodepositable pretreatment composition, the substrate optionally may be contacted with a sealing composition comprising phosphate and a Group IIIB and/or IVB metal. Substrates treated according to the methods also are disclosed.
