Abstract: To achieve, an in vivo repair of injured mammalian nerve tissue, an effective amount of a biomembrane fusion agent is administered to the injured nerve tissue. The application of the biomembrane fusion agent may be performed by directly contacting the agent with the nerve tissue at the site of the injury. Alternatively, the biomembrane fusion agent is delivered to the site of the injury through the blood supply after administration of the biomembrane fusion agent to the patient. The administration is preferably by parenteral administration including intravascular, intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intraperitoneal injection of an effective quantity of the biomembrane fusion agent so that an effective amount is delivered to the site of the nerve tissue injury.

Abstract: A system and method for controlling the movement of an implement of an earthmoving machine. The system includes a hydraulic actuator adapted to move the implement. A variable displacement pump is coupled to the actuator for delivering a pressurized fluid to and receiving pressurized fluid from chambers within the actuator. A sensor generates an output based on the position of the actuator's piston or piston rod, and a controller controls the displacement of the variable displacement pump in response to the output of the sensor by executing an algorithm to reduce the flow rate of the fluid to and from the actuator's chambers and thereby reduce the velocity of the piston as it approaches an end of a piston stroke thereof and prevent the piston from impacting the actuator at the end of the piston stroke.

Abstract: Production of synthetic liquid hydrocarbon fuel from carbon containing moieties such as biomass, coal, methane, naphtha as a carbon source and hydrogen from a carbon-free energy source is disclosed. The biomass can be fed to a gasifier along with hydrogen, oxygen, steam and recycled carbon dioxide. The synthesis gas from the gasifier exhaust is sent to a liquid hydrocarbon conversion reactor to form liquid hydrocarbon molecules. Unreacted CO & H2 can be recycled to the gasifier along with CO2 from the liquid hydrocarbon conversion reactor system. Hydrogen can be obtained from electrolysis of water, thermo-chemical cycles or directly by using energy from carbon-free energy sources.

Abstract: Glucose and ATP biosensors have important applications in diagnostics and research. Combining single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with Pt nanoparticles can significantly enhance the performance of electrochemical biosensors. This disclosure illustrates the use of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) to modify SWCNTs to increase SWCNT solubility in water. Multiple embodiments with this configuration allows for exploration of new schemes of combining ssDNASWCNT and Pt black in aqueous media systems. These embodiments resulted in a nanocomposite with enhanced biosensor performance. The ssDNA-SWCNT/Pt black nanocomposite constructed by a layered scheme proved most effective in terms of biosensor activity. The key feature of this structure and method of use is the exploitation of ssDNASWCNTs as molecular templates for Pt black electrodeposition. Glucose and ATP microbiosensors fabricated utilizing this structure and method of use exhibited high sensitivity, wide linear range and low limit of detection.

Abstract: New time-domain response system calibration techniques are described for determining dry density and water content of soil based on electromagnetic wave propagation through it. For example, one disclosed technique use the ratio between V1, the voltage difference between the peak and trough of the response signal, and Vf, the long-term (i.e., steady-state) response of the system to the input pulse. These values are measurable, even for highly conductive soils, and calibration done in a laboratory can be applied to measurements taken in an uncontrolled field environment.
Abstract: A scanning probe microscope includes a plate moveable in an x-axis direction, a y-axis direction, and a z-axis direction, and a probe tip coupled to the plate. A plurality of actuators cooperate to move the probe tip with three degrees of freedom of movement.
Abstract: Techniques are provided for searching on three dimensional (3D) objects across large, distributed repositories of 3D models. 3D shapes are created for input to a search system; optionally user-defined similarity criterion is used, and search results are interactively navigated and feedback received for modifying the accuracy of the search results. Search input can also be given by picking 3D models from a cluster map or by providing the orthographic views for the 3D model. Feedback can be given by a searcher as to which models are similar and which are not. Various techniques adjust the search results according to the feedback given by the searcher and present the new search results to the searcher.
Abstract: An apparatus for connecting a computing device to different types of mobile devices that includes an enclosure that encloses a USB hub, mobile device cables connectable to different mobile devices, and a USB cable connectable to a computing device to extract data from connected mobile devices. The mobile device cables are coupled to the USB cable through the USB hub. The apparatus can include multimedia card readers within the enclosure that are coupled to the USB hub and connectable to different types of multimedia cards to extract data from connected multimedia cards. The multimedia card readers can be write-protected to only read information from connected multimedia cards. The apparatus can include biometric data gathering tools, camera or light within the enclosure. The enclosure can be tube, notebook or flask shaped. The apparatus can also include a wiring harness that seals one end of the enclosure from the other end.

Abstract: A system processes 2D images of 2D or 3D objects, creating a model of the object that is consistent with the image and as veridical as the perception of the 2D image by humans. Vertices of the object that are hidden in the image are recovered by using planarity and symmetry constraints. The 3D shape is recovered by maximizing 3D compactness of the recovered object and minimizing its surface area. In some embodiments, these two criteria are weighted by using the geometric mean.
