  • Patent number: 7693213
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for estimating a transmission power required for data transmission in a communication system are disclosed. A terminal determines a quality metric of a communication link, over which data are to be transmitted, and modifies the determined quality metric by a quality metric margin. The terminal then estimates the maximum rate of data in accordance with the modified quality metric. Alternatively, the terminal estimates transmission power required for data transmission with a data rate in accordance with the modified quality metric. The quality metric margin may be a pre-determined or dynamically adjusted. The terminal dynamically adjusts the quality metric margin in accordance with a result of comparison of a transmit power corresponding to the estimated maximum rate of data with an actual transmit power used to transmit the data.

Abstract: A computer program product estimates performance of a back end of line (BEOL) structure of a semiconductor integrated circuit (IC). Code executes on a computer to dynamically predict an electrical resistance of the BEOL structure based on input data specific to multiple layers of the BEOL structure. The BEOL structure can be a contact or a via. The layers of the contact/via include an inner filling material and an outer liner. The code accounts for a width scatter effect of the inner filling material, as well as a slope profile of the contact/via.

  • Patent number: 7643828
Abstract: A method and apparatus for a communication system provide for fast link setup for a mobile station by transmitting a request message, transmitting an assignment message from the base station to the mobile station, and transmitting a notification message from the base station to a base station controller. The mobile station transmits an indication message to the base station controller indicating a successful completion of acquiring the data packet channel. The base station controller processes the indication message for message integrity and security feature. A portion of the available communication resources at the base station is allocated for an immediate response to the request message for acquiring a data packet channel.

  • Patent number: 7596354
Abstract: A mechanism that enables a gateway to dynamically determine which of two transmission signal polarizations is best received by a wireless communication device having a nominally linear antenna. A first pilot and second pilot signals, having different polarizations and orthogonally encoded, are transmitted to the communication device. The communication device determines the relative or absolute signal strengths of the first and second pilot signals and transmits this information to the gateway. The gateway then selects the polarization having the strongest associated signal strength to transmit content-bearing signals to the communication device. Alternatively, the communication device may also determine the phase difference between the first and second pilot signals and transmit this information to the gateway.

  • Patent number: 7489746
Abstract: A MIMO receiver is provided with a preprocessor for performing QR decomposition of a channel matrix H wherein the factored reduced matrix R is used in place of H and Q*y is used in place of the received vector y in a maximum likelihood detector (“MLD”). The maximum likelihood detector might be a hard-decision MLD or a soft-decision MLD. A savings of computational complexity can be used to provide comparable results more quickly, using less circuitry, and/or requiring less consumed energy, or performance can be improved for a fixed amount of time, circuitry and/or energy. Where the MLD uses approximations, such as finite resolution calculations (fixed point or the like) or L1 Norm approximations, the reduced number of operations resulting from using the reduced matrix results in improved approximations as a result of the finite resolution operations. Other methods of reducing the channel matrix might be used for suitable and/or cumulative advantages.

  • Patent number: 7418046
Abstract: Each transmitter is assigned a time-only pilot code, a frequency-only pilot code, or a time-frequency pilot code to use for pilot transmission. The pilot codes may be pseudo-random, orthogonal, and/or cyclic-shift codes. To obtain a channel estimate for a transmitter using a time-frequency pilot code composed of a time-only code and a frequency-only code, a receiver multiplies a set of received symbols for each symbol period with a set of code values for the frequency-only code to obtain a set of detected symbols and performs an IDFT on the set of detected symbols to obtain an initial impulse response estimate. The receiver performs code matching on multiple initial impulse response estimates derived for multiple symbol periods with the time-only code to obtain a final impulse response estimate for the desired transmitter. The receiver retains the first L channel taps and zeroes out remaining channel taps, where L is the expected channel length.

  • Patent number: 7349679
Abstract: A power amplifier develops a modulated high power signal by summing the outputs of multiple voltage controlled oscillators. A phase control circuit synchronizes the phase relationship of multiple voltage controlled oscillators. The voltage control oscillators provide amplitude modulation of an output signal of the voltage controlled oscillator by adjusting transconductance of amplification devices of the voltage controlled oscillator. Another embodiment of the power amplifier provides buffer circuits at the outputs of the voltage controlled oscillators. The gain or delay of the buffer circuits is varied to provide amplitude modulation of the power amplifier.

  • Patent number: 7328159
Abstract: An improved system for an interactive voice recognition system (400) includes a voice prompt generator (401) for generating voice prompt in a first frequency band (501). A speech detector (406) detects presence of speech energy in a second frequency band (502). The first and second frequency bands (501, 502) are essentially conjugate frequency bands. A voice data generator (412) generates voice data based on an output of the voice prompt generator (401) and audible speech of a voice response generator (402). • Publication number: 20070271321
Abstract: Techniques for efficiently performing transforms on data are described. In one design, an apparatus performs multiplication of a group of data values with a group of rational dyadic constants that approximates at least one irrational constant scaled by a common factor. Each rational dyadic constant is a rational number with a dyadic denominator. The common factor is selected based on pre-computed numbers of operations for multiplication of a data value by different possible values of at least one rational dyadic constant. The pre-computed numbers of operations may be stored in a look-up table or some other data structure and may be used to evaluate different possible values for the common factor. The use of the common factor may reduce complexity and/or improve precision. The multiplication may be performed for various transforms such DCT, IDCT, etc.

  • Publication number: 20070217597
Abstract: The call processing state machines defined by the CDMA standards (e.g., IS-95 and IS-2000) are modified to include a “traffic channel” substate indicative of the mobile station processing at least one active call. Call control (CC) state machines of various types are also provided to control the processing of the calls. To process one or more calls concurrently, a CC state machine is instantiated upon receiving an indication to process a particular call. The instantiated CC state machine is identified with, and used to control the processing of, the particular call. Upon receiving an indication to process an additional call, another CC state machine can be instantiated for the additional call. Each call to be processed can also be associated with a particular a service option connection, which includes information indicative of a set of parameters (e.g., the physical channels) to be used for data transmission.

  • Patent number: 7271465
Abstract: Techniques for “strapping” a primary conductor with a secondary conductor in an integrated circuit (IC). The IC includes a number of circuit elements interconnected by a secondary conductor through a number of vias disposed at a number of locations for coupling the circuit elements as an alternative to a primary conductor. The primary conductor is typically formed with a low loss metal (e.g., copper or copper alloy), and the secondary conductor is typically formed with a lossy metal (e.g., aluminum or aluminum alloy) relative to the low loss metal. The secondary conductor is strapped to the primary conductor by the vias, which may be disposed only at both ends or along the entire length of the secondary conductor. The secondary conductor is formed using design guidelines such that it provides the required electrical connectivity when the primary conductor is not present but minimally interferes with the RF performance of the primary conductor.
