  • Patent number: 5544525
Abstract: A system of atmospheric remote sensing instruments that utilize a common phased-array acoustic antenna so as to take temperature and wind measurements over a wide range of altitudes. One of the atmospheric remote sensing instruments in the system is a monostatic SODAR that takes wind measurements by transmitting pulses of acoustic energy into the atmosphere and then measuring received reflected acoustic energy. The acoustic pulses are both transmitted and received by the common phased-array acoustic antenna. Another of the atmospheric remote sensing instruments in the system is a wind profiling radar that takes wind measurements by transmitting pulses of electromagnetic energy into the atmosphere and then measuring received backscattered electromagnetic energy. The pulses of electromagnetic energy are both transmitted and received by a phased-array radar antenna.

  • Patent number: 5509304
Abstract: A sound detection and ranging (SODAR) system for taking wind measurements by sending out acoustic pulses and then measuring acoustic energy reflected back to the instrument by the atmosphere. The acoustic pulses are formed using digital beamforming technology which allows the acoustic pulses to be steered independent of frequency due to a time delay design. Also, the present invention SODAR instrument allows wideband capability that is limited only by the dimensions of the antenna array. Furthermore, the present invention SODAR instrument allows the acoustic pulses to be variably steered and allows multiple acoustic beams to be simultaneously received.

  • Patent number: 5470224
Abstract: A two stage rapid mix burner provides apparatus and method which significantly reduce the burner size of a rapid mix burner, and/or the burner pressure drop, while maintaining the rapid mix feature and stability of the basic rapid mix design. The burner can also be easily altered to fit in non-circular geometries, such as a corner or tangential fired boiler. The invention uses a circular basic rapid mix burner located internally of a larger burner which can be non-circular. The inner burner provides the flow of hot gases which stabilizes the outer burner. In effect, the combustion gases produced in the inner burner replace the strong internal recirculation flow generated by the basic RMB as an ignition source for the outer burner flow.

  • Patent number: 5407347
Abstract: A forced draft burner apparatus and method providing extremely low NO.sub.x, CO and hydrocarbon emissions, while maintaining the desirable features of a nozzle mix burner. This is accomplished by injecting the fuel gas in a position that would be typical for a nozzle mix burner, while generating such rapid mixing that, effectively, premixed conditions are created upstream of the ignition point.

Abstract: A method and device for the measurement of rheological properties of high density slurry materials and in particular high density mill tailings. A sample of the tailings is placed within a mixing tub, with either a concentric paddle or a planetarily movable paddle used to effect the mixing. A digitally controlled electric motor is used to directly drive the paddle at a constant or predetermined speed or speeds. Abstract: A method for the measurement of rheological properties of high density slurry materials and in particular high density mill tailings. A sample of the tailings is placed within a mixing tub, with mixing paddle used to effect the mixing. A digitally controlled electric motor is used to directly drive the paddle at a constant predetermined speed or speeds. Feedback control elements, including a variable speed drive and a computer constantly monitor the mixing speed and compensate for deviations therefrom. The tub is laterally pivotable against a load cell for a direct determination of reaction torque with correlation to viscosity and other rheological properties of the mill tailings. The load cell emits signals which are conditioned and fed to the computer which correlates torque to speed and determines the rheological properties on a continuous real-time basis. The computer also compares determined torque/speed parameters to stored rheological properties of known materials.

  • Patent number: 5232596
Abstract: A method for improved slurry-phase bioremediation treatment of organic sludge and mixtures of organic sludge and organics-contaminated soils by dissolving the contaminants into an aqueous phase and microbially degrading same. A high solids slurry of the sludge and soils is formed with water and an active bioslurry consisting of large populations of acclimated hydrocarbon-utilizing bacteria and small amounts of biodegradation residue. The slurry is passed through a plurality of in-series bioreactors in each of which a low hydraulic shear is maintained to promote the development of a large population of microorganisms that will form flocculent suspensions. The output from the series of bioreactors is flowed continuously or semicontinuously to a liquid-solids separator to partition the mixed liquor bioslurry from the biodegraded waste residue The mixed liquor bioslurry containing small amounts of biodegradation residue is returned to the slurry being processed for recycling.

  • Patent number: 5224334
Abstract: A process and system for low NO.sub.x cogeneration to produce electricity and useful heat. Fuel and oxygen are provided to an internal combustion engine connected to drive an electric generator, to thereby generate electricity. An exhaust stream is recovered from the engine at a temperature of about 500.degree. to 1000.degree. F. which includes from about 6 to 15 percent oxygen. Fuel is added to the exhaust stream to create a fuel-rich mixture, the quantity of fuel being sufficient to react with oxygen and reduce the NO.sub.x in said exhaust stream. The fuel-enriched stream is provided to an afterburner, and the fuel, NO.sub.x and available oxygen are reacted to provide a heated oxygen-depleted stream. The oxygen-depleted stream is cooled in a first heat exchanger. Conversion oxygen is admixed with the cooled stream which is then passed over a catalyst bed under overall reducing conditions. NO is converted to NO.sub.2 at the forward end of the bed, and the NO.sub.

  • Patent number: 5178101
Abstract: A method and corresponding system are provided for reducing quantities of oxides of nitrogen, including N.sub.2 O, that are generated in a coal-fired fluidized bed boiler, the exhaust stream from the fluidized bed boiler being at a temperature of about 600.degree.-650.degree. F. and including from about 3 to 6% oxygen, from about 50 to 500 ppmv of NO.sub.x and from about 50 to 300 ppmv of N.sub.2 O. Pursuant to the invention, the exhaust stream is flowed through a thermal reaction zone at which fuel and air are burned, to provide a modified heated stream which includes small quantities of combustibles and of oxygen. The modified heated stream is passed over a first catalyst bed under overall reducing conditions, the quantity of oxygen in the stream being in stoichiometric excess of the amount of NO.sub.2 O and NO.sub.x, but less than the amount of said combustibles; whereby the N.sub.2 O and NO.sub.x are first oxidized to NO.sub.2, and then the NO.sub.2 is reduced by the excess combustibles.

  • Patent number: 5141432
Abstract: Burner apparatus for use in controlled low NO.sub.x combustion. Mixing and flow-directing means receive and mix fuel and air provided thereto and form a flow of the resulting combustible mixture. A combustion zone defined by a porous high temperature-resistant matrix includes an input end for receiving the combustible flow. Cooling means are mounted in proximity to the input end of the combustion zone, for maintaining the temperature of the flowing combustible mixture proximate the input end below ignition temperature, thereby limiting the flame produced by combustion in the porous matrix to the downstream side of the cooling means. The method for controlled low NO.sub.x combustion is also disclosed and claimed.
