  • Patent number: 8328972
Abstract: The foamed article is produced starting from a core layer (1) which comprises a flexible, open-cell foam having voids forming at least 90% of the volume of the open-cell foam. The core layer (1) is applied in a mold (6, 8), optionally together with an upper (3) and/or a lower cover layer (2), between a lower (5) and an upper mold surface (9) thereof. The mold (6, 8) is closed and a curable, foamable composition (7) is allowed to foam in the mold to produce a further foam filling the voids of the open-cell foam. In order to enable to use less foamable composition (7) to fill the voids of the open-cell foam, the core layer (1) is laid onto the lower mold surface (5) and the foamable composition (7) is sprayed onto the core layer (1) lying onto the lower mold surface so that the foamable composition (7) can penetrate at least partially by gravity into the open-cell foam core layer (1).

  • Patent number: 8318259
Abstract: For producing a polyurethane layer by spraying a polyurethane reaction mixture, this mixture is supplied under pressure to a spray nozzle, within the nozzle the reaction mixture is accelerated by passing it through one or more channels having a reduced cross-sectional area, and the accelerated reaction mixture is sprayed, with a predetermined amount of kinetic energy, through a spray opening out of the spray nozzle onto a surface. The channels wherein the reaction mixture is accelerated have a total minimum cross-sectional area of S mm2, S being a value smaller than 1.0, the reaction mixture is sprayed out of the nozzle at a flow rate of between 10×S and 80×S g/sec, and, per gram reaction mixture, an amount of 0.05 to 2.5 mmol of a pressurized gas is sprayed together with the reaction mixture through said spray opening out of the nozzle to increase the kinetic energy of the reaction mixture which is sprayed out of the nozzle.

  • Publication number: 20120289621
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for functionalising a thermoset, crosslinked isocyanate-based polymeric solid material which is made of isocyanate and isocyanate reactive components, at least one of which comprises an anchor component which has at least one anchor group. The anchor groups on the solid material are formed by terminal alkene and/or alkyne groups. To functionalise this polymeric solid material it is brought in contact with a solution which contains at least one functional component. This functional component comprises at least one thiol group and is allowed to bind covalently to the polymeric solid material by a free-radical addition reaction between the thiol groups on the functional component and the terminal alkene and/or alkyne anchor groups on the undissolved solid material. An effective functionalisation of the polymeric material can thus be achieved notwithstanding the heterogeneous reaction conditions.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for the preparation of a flexible polyurethane foam and to the polyurethane foam prepared by that process. The foam is in particular a flexible polyurethane foam which has a density of between 25 and 120 kg/m3, a resilience, measured at 20° C. in accordance with ASTM D 3574 H, higher than 35%, and an ILD 40% hardness, measured in accordance with ISO 2439 B, of between 60 and 500 N. It is prepared by allowing a reaction mixture, which comprises a blowing agent, to foam. In order to influence the physical and/or thermophysiological properties of the foam, in particular the pressure distribution properties, at least one organogel material is dispersed in the reaction mixture before allowing it to foam.

  • Patent number: 8262002
Abstract: The pressure swirl atomizing nozzle for spraying a curable composition comprises an orifice piece (16), which defines a funnel-shaped cavity and an exit orifice (17), and an injector piece (18) which closing off the funnel-shaped cavity so that the funnel-shaped cavity forms a swirl chamber (19) between a front side of the injector piece (18) and the exit orifice (17). The injector piece (18) comprises at least two swirl ports (20) which end in the swirl chamber (19) for injecting the curable composition therein and for thereby imparting swirl to the curable composition. Compared to the sum of the smallest cross-sectional areas of the swirl ports (20), the side wall (24) of the swirl chamber (19) has a relatively small surface area which is however still large enough to distribute the curable composition so as to achieve a uniform spray pattern. By the reduced size of the swirl chamber (19), the curable composition can be atomized more efficiently.

  • Publication number: 20120064320
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing a multilayered part which comprises a moulded core (5) and a flexible polyurethane skin layer (4). The core itself comprises a moulded substrate layer (1) which is made of a substrate material, in particular a thermoplastic material, having a Shore A hardness higher than 60. The flexible polyurethane skin (4) is produced by a reaction overmoulding (ROM) process wherein a polyurethane reaction mixture is moulded in a closed mould (11, 12) over at least a first area of the core surface. The moulded core (5) comprises in addition to said substrate layer (1) a softer material which is moulded onto the substrate layer (1) and/or onto which the substrate layer (1) is moulded. This moulded softer material has a Shore A hardness lower than 60 and forms a softer layer (2) between the flexible polyurethane layer (4) and the substrate layer (1) and/or a seal (3) engaging the internal wall of the mould (11, 12) during the ROM process.

  • Publication number: 20120041090
Abstract: The process comprises preparing a reaction mixture from a polyisocyanate component and from a polyol component which comprises one or more polyester polyols formed from at least one dimer fatty acid and/or at least one dimer fatty alcohol. In order to improve the processability of the polyurethane flexible foams so that these foams can be produced with the desired hardness and mechanical properties over a broad density range, the isocyanate reactive compounds contain, per 100 parts by weight thereof, 25 to 95 parts by weight of said polyester polyols and 5 to 75 parts by weight of one or more polyether polyols which are free of dimer fatty chains. In this way, no lipophilic filler is needed so that the fogging and emission properties of the foam can be improved. Moreover, softer foam can be produced without having to apply a too low NCO index resulting in better mechanical properties and in particular in a lower compression set.
