Abstract: An analytical method for determining the presence or concentration of an analyte in a liquid medium is provided in which electrons are transferred from an electrode material of an electrode to the redox center of an enzyme, by the mediation of an electron mediator, whereby in the presence of an analyte the enzyme calalyzed a redox reaction in which the analyte is converted into a product. By measuring either the concentration or the product or the charge which flows in this process, the presence and/or concentration of the analyte in the medium is determined. Either or both of the enzyme and the electron mediator are immobilized on the electrode.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming a two-dimensional assembly of fine particles on a surface. A wall cell is placed in contact with or near the surface of a solid substrate so as to form a closed surface region on the surface of the solid substrate, a liquid containing fine particles is injected onto the closed surface region in the wall cell, and then the liquid is removed at a controlled rate, thereby causing a two-dimensional assembly of fine particles to form on the solid surface.

Abstract: Biologically pure strains of Thermus sp. FERM BP-1678, FERM BP-1679 and FERM BP-1680 have been isolated, and are capable of producing a beta-galactosidase. The beta-galactosidase produced by these strains has specific characteristics wherein the enzyme is optimum at a temperature of 75 to 85 degrees celsius and pH of 4.5 to 6.5. Further, the enzymatic activity is reduced by at most 10% in the presence of 50 millimoles (mM) of galactose and glucose, respectively.

Abstract: The invention provides a medium and a method suitable for magneto-optical and multiple recording. The medium includes alternate thin layers of a magnetic rare-earth metal and an electrically conductive material, and has "magnetic frozen state" at low temperature. The medium may be magnetized to different ferromagnetic states when heated to different temperatures by a controlled laser beam, under an external magnetic field. The different magnetic states permit of multiple recording.

Abstract: The present invention provides a composite oxide thin film which is characterized in that said thin film is formed, by energizing a work electrode and an opposite electrode immersed in a solution containing reactive components, through the reaction between said reactive components in the solution and said work electrode. More particularly, the present invention provides a composite oxide thin film formed through an electric-chemical reaction under water thermal conditions. According to the present invention, improvement of crystallinity is promoted by the use of water thermal conditions as compared with the conventional thin film forming methods, and it is possible to obtain a uniform composite oxide thin film having an excellent crystallinity directly at a relatively low temperature. A large-area thin film can thus easily be manufactured.

Abstract: A method of and apparatus for efficiently correcting an aberration of an optical system used to record a hologram at the stage of reconstructing an image of the hologram. At the stage of reconstructing an image of a hologram (3), which contains the record of interference fringes formed by a reference plane wave and an object wave modulated by a sample, by applying a plane wave for reconstruction to the hologram (3) from a laser (1), an aberration of an optical system used to record the hologram (3) is canceled by the phase distribution on a liquid crystal panel (6) having a spatial phase modulation function, which is disposed on the Fourier transform plane, thereby correcting the aberration. The phase distribution on the liquid crystal panel (6) can be changed flexibly by a computer (9) in accordance with the aberration coefficients or degree of defocusing of the recording optical system.

Abstract: The measurement of gray scale or color composition integrated densities of irregularly shaped areas of a subject specimen is accomplished by using a video camera to derive an analog video image signal representative of the optical intensity of light associated with the specimen. A modified low cost high speed video digitizer converts the video image signal into a digital format which an interactive computer program converts into digital optical density values that are used to determine the net integrated density of each irregularly shaped area within the specimen.

Abstract: An insert for use in an apparatus for scaling of teeth and lavage of the gingival sulcus is provided. The insert comprises a tip for scaling and delivery of lavage fluids, retaining means for retaining the scaling tip in the insert, and a path means for delivering irrigant for scaling or for lavage through the insert and to the end of the scaling tip. The scaling tip is shaped and dimensioned for scaling and lavage below the gumline in periodontal pockets. When a magnetostrictive insert is used, an outlet means is provided to remove stack cooling water from the insert so that stack cooling water does not enter a patient's mouth.
Abstract: The invention relates to a cooling garment, preferably in the form of a vest that contains pouches containing a phase change material. The pouches cover less than the surface area of the vest to thereby permit evaporative cooling to occur and to contribute to the overall comfort of the wearer. An alternate embodiment includes a honeycomb structure which is contained within the pouches and which contains a macroencapsulated phase change material and allows the escape of perspiration through the garment. A heat transfer fluid is adapted to circulate throughout the pouches. The honeycomb structure is designed so that the macroencapsulated phase change material remains within designated ones of the honeycombs, but that permits the flow of the heat transfer fluid through the pouch.

Abstract: The measuring device has bobs 10, 17 suspended from a weight 12 with wires 11, 16. The hook 13 of the weight 12 is hung from a suspensor thread 15 extending downwards from a balance 14. The weight 12 may be omitted by using the upper bob 10 for dead weight. The bobs 10, 17 and the wires 11, 16 may be coated with a coating layer unreactive to the melt 19 whose density is to be measured. The weights of the measuring device is measured by the balance 14 under the first condition that the lower bob 17 is immersed in the liquid 19 and the second condition that the bobs 10, 17 are both immersed in the liquid 19. The density of the liquid 19 is calculated from the two measured values without the influence of the surface tension of the liquid 19 applied to the wires 11, 16.
