Patent number: 4978920Abstract: The screen is provided by surrounding the coil producing the magnetic field with a set of electrical conductors the currents within the conductors being controlled in such a manner that the field is neutrailized in a specific region of space, the current distribution within the conductors being determined by calculating the current within a hypothetical superconductive shield which would have the effect of neutrailizing the field, the current through the conductors thereby being a substitute for the superconductive shield.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1989Date of Patent: December 18, 1990Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventors: Peter Mansfield, Barry L. Patent number: 4977242Abstract: A cumulatable ultrafine polymer particle consisting of one molecular chain of the polymer is prepared by spreading a dilute solution of the polymer at the interface between the atmosphere and a subphase solution having a weak affinity for the polymer, and evaporating the spreading solvent or dissolving it into the subphase. A composite material comprising the polymer particles is produced by contacting the particles formed on the subphase solution with the surface of a substrate. The particles are cumulated on the substrate in a ratio of area occupied by the particles of at least 10%. The particles may be cumulated in multiple layers on the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1989Date of Patent: December 11, 1990Assignee: Research Development Corp. of JapanInventor: Jiro Kumaki

Patent number: 4975244Abstract: Soft soldering compositions posessing equal or better melting, wetting and strength properties than conventional straight tin-lead solders but with a reduced tin content are disclosed. The compositions consist of 1-35 wt % tin, 5-30 wt % cadmium 0.05-2.5 wt % antimony, balance essentially lead with 5-30 wt % cadmium, and/or 1-15 wt % bismuth. The solder alloys are characterized by their improved properties concerning solidification temperature gap, spread percentage, wetting time and shear strength. Specific compositions are disclosed having the necessary properties to successfully replace the tradional tin-lead solders containing 30, 40 and 50 wt % tin. The high temperature performance of bonds made with these new alloys are better because of their reduced tendency of intermetallic compounds formation with the substrate due to their lower tin content.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 1989Date of Patent: December 4, 1990Assignee: Technion Research & Development Foundation Ltd.Inventors: Shraga Dirnfeld, Jean Ramon

Patent number: 4966580Abstract: A device for administering oral fluid to a patient from a container (18) has a nipple (14) connected to the container (18) by a tube (16). The nipple (14) is held on the patient's tongue. A valve (22) opens in response to the patient sucking or pressing the nipple to initiate a flow of fluid in the tube (16). A detector (92) responds to this flow and switches on a peristaltic pump (90) for a period determined by the setting of a controller (102) to deliver positively a suitable bolus of 2 to 6 ml to the patient. To give the patient time to swallow the bolus, the detector (92) is inhibited for a predetermined delay period after termination of the bolus and over the same delay period, the tube (16) remains pinched or clamped.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1989Date of Patent: October 30, 1990Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventors: John J. Patent number: 4964845Abstract: To separate minerals, they are made up into a slurry A applied to a hollow tapered cylinder 301 spinning on its axis to generate 10 g centrifugal force. The cylinder 301 is also subjected to axial vibration at 5 to 10 Hz. The cylinder widens at a half-angle of 1.degree., and its axis is inclined at 2.degree. upwardly in the direction of widening.A film of slurry is held centrifugally to the internal surface of the cylinder and kept in suspension by the vibration. The denser (i.e. higher specific gravity) particles in the slurry tend to move preferentially radially outwardly (centrifugally) and to move downwardly in the boundary layer (under Earth's gravity). The action of the washing water B is to displace waste accidentally entrained with the higher-specific-gravity-particles.The valuable higher-specific-gravity particles overflow downwardly continuously at C and are collected.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 1989Date of Patent: October 23, 1990Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventor: Richard H. Patent number: 4962911Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved valve comprising a valve housing, a fluid path therethrough, a seat disposed about the fluid path, a rotatable, curved wedge disposed in the fluid path, an actuator for rotating the wedge between its closed and opened positions and a fixed member for displacing the wedge longitudinally toward the seat as it is rotated between its opened and closed positions. Preferably, the seat is biased toward the hemi-wedge. The rotatable, curved wedge has a curved sealing surface for cooperation with the seat. The wedge includes a bore through its thinner end forming a part of the fluid flow path when opened while its thicker end blocks the fluid flow path in the closed position. The sides of the wedge are curved, one side providing a convex sealing surface and the other side providing a concave thrust surface.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1990Date of Patent: October 16, 1990Assignee: Soderberg Research & Development, Inc.Inventor: Paul B. Patent number: 4964071Abstract: In computer control of machine tools there is a need to measure the diameters of cylindrical workpieces automatically and preferably without touching the workpiece. For this purpose an inductive proximity sensor is mounted for circular or linear movement along a path adjacent to a cylindrical workpiece and in a plane normal to a radius of the workpiece. A discrete fast Fourier transform (FFT) is carried out on the output of the sensor as it moves along the path and the amplitude of the second ac component of the FFT is an indication of the workpiece diameter. By calibrating with workpieces of different diameters, the said amplitude can be used as a measure of workpiece diameter.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 1988Date of Patent: October 16, 1990Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventor: Roger I. Grosvenor

Patent number: 4963859Abstract: Where a signature is to be automatically verified, or data is to be entered into a computer, a special pen is usually employed but this pen is liable to be stolen or vandalized. In the present invention the tip of an ordinary pen presses lined paper on to a transparent plate and modifies internal reflection in the plate at the point of contact. A light source edge-illuminates the plate and light received by a receiver at another edge of the plate varies in intensity as the pen tip crosses the lines. By measuring the intervals between crossing line boundaries information is obtained which can be analyzed for use in signature verification and data entry.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1988Date of Patent: October 16, 1990Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventor: John R. Patent number: 4962505Abstract: In a solid-state laser device having a laser medium, a reflector member has first and second curved portions surrounding first and second reflector axes, respectively, and an extension portion extended from the first and the second curved portions towards a principal surface of the laser medium for defining an internal space together with the curved portions. Within the internal space, first and second lamps are disposed farther from the principal surface than the first and the second reflector axes, respectively, with first and second lamp axes of the first and the second lamps juxtaposed to the reflector axes and an optical axis of the laser medium. Each curved portion has an arcuate internal surface which forms a partially circular cylinder having a center axis as the reflector axis. Alternatively, the arcuate internal surface of each curved portion forms a partially elliptic cylinder having a symmetry axis as the reflector axis and an outside focal line with which the lamp axis substantially coincides.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 1989Date of Patent: October 9, 1990Assignees: Hoya Corporation, Research Development CorporationInventors: Takayasu Mochizuki, Josef R.
