Abstract: Sub-diffraction-limited patterning using a photoswitchable recording material is disclosed. A substrate can be provided with a photoresist in a first transition state. The photoresist can be configured for spectrally selective reversible transitions between at least two transition states based on a first wavelength band of illumination and a second wavelength band of illumination. An optical device can selectively expose the photoresist to a standing wave with a second wavelength in the second wavelength band to convert a section of the photoresist into a second transition state. The optical device or a substrate carrier securing the substrate can modify the standing wave relative to the substrate to further expose additional regions of the photoresist into the second transition state in a specified pattern.
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to compounds that are useful as near-infrared fluorescence probes, wherein the compounds include i) a pteroyl ligand that binds to a target receptor protein, ii) a dye molecule, and iii) a linker molecule that comprises an amino acid or derivative thereof. The disclosure further describes methods and compositions for making and using the compounds, methods incorporating the compounds, and kits incorporating the compounds.

Abstract: Devices and methods for controlling an electronic system are provided. An embodiment of a device comprises a spring having a first end with a first handle and a second end with a second handle. A first sensor detects movement of the first end and a second sensor detects movement of the second end. Each sensor provides a control signal to the electronic system such that the electronic system can act according to the varying control signals. A method comprises providing a spring-based musical instrument and providing a computer having a speaker. The spring is altered by the musician in order to generate control signals to the computer. Sound is generated by the speaker and varied by the computer according to the received control signals.

Abstract: Virtual substrates made by hydride vapor phase epitaxy are provided comprising a semiconductor growth substrate and a substantially strain-relaxed metamorphic buffer layer (MBL) structure comprising one or more layers of a semiconductor alloy on the growth substrate. The MBL structure is compositionally graded such that its lattice constant transitions from a lattice constant at the interface with the growth substrate that is substantially the same as the lattice constant of the growth substrate to a lattice constant at a surface opposite the interface that is different from the lattice constant of the growth substrate. The virtual substrates comprise relatively thick MBL structures (e.g., >20 ?m) and relatively thick growth substrates (e.g., >0.5 mm).

Abstract: Methods for isolating viable cancer cells from a sample that comprises a mixture of cancerous cells and normal (non-cancerous) cells are provided. In the methods, a fluid preparation comprising a mixture of cancerous and normal cells is repeatedly exposed to fluid shear stresses, whereby the repeated exposure to the fluid shear stresses preferentially imparts fluid shear stress-resistance to the cancerous cells.

Abstract: A multi-phase voltage from a utility grid is applied to a first side of a plurality of open windings of a stator. A phase of the multi-phase voltage is determined. Stator currents measured from a second side of the plurality of open windings are converted to a non-rotating direct-quadrature (d-q) reference frame. A q-axis of the non-rotating d-q reference frame contains a voltage vector defined from the multi-phase voltage, and a d-axis is normal to the voltage vector. A d-axis component of the converted stator currents is applied as an error signal to a proportional-integral controller to determine an output voltage signal. The output voltage signal is converted from the non-rotating d-q reference frame to a reference frame defined by the phase. The output voltage signal is applied to an inverter to define a second output voltage. The second output voltage is applied to the second side of the plurality of open windings.

Abstract: Embodiments of the subject invention relate to a method and apparatus for detecting and/or analyzing respiratory motion of a patient, such as an animal or person. A specific embodiment can use a radar motion detector to measure and record respiratory movements at different parts of the body, using multiple identifiable markers, such as reflectors, positioned such that movements of the patient can be monitored by monitoring the movement of the markers. As an example, the markers can be attached to or worn by the patient, inserted into the patient (such as under the skin), or otherwise positioned in a known relation to a portion or surface of the patient. In an embodiment, the identifiable reflectors are transponders with different modulation codes (in frequency, phase, amplitude, or combinations thereof) on the reflected signal.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to IR photodetectors with gain resulting from the positioning of a charge multiplication layer (CML) between the cathode and the IR sensitizing layer of the photodetector, where accumulating charge at the CML reduces the energy difference between the cathode and the CML to promote injection of electrons that result in gain for an electron only device. Other embodiments of the invention are directed to inclusion of the IR photodetectors with gain into an IR-to-visible up-conversion device that can be used in night vision and other applications.
