  • Patent number: 5072626
Abstract: A measurement system for microelectronic clean rooms to measure ultrafine particle size distribution in the range of 0.002 to 0.2 micrometers is provided which includes four screen diffusion stages each connected in series with a condensation nucleus detector. The input to each screen diffusion stage is connected to a localized area to be measured, and the output of each condensation nucleus detector is connected to a vacuum system which simultaneously draws particle bearing air through the four channels. The output signals of the condensation nucleus detectors present particle size distributiion. In one embodiment of the present invention, one or more optical particle detectors are connected in parallel with the diffusion stage-condensation nucleus detectors to expand the distribution measurements to larger sizes.

  • Patent number: 5061068
Abstract: Particular contamination below about 0.3 microns in average diameter on an IC wafer substrate is detected by forming a film of a volatile liquid on the wafer's surface and observing interference patterns formed by particles during the evaporation process. These interference patterns magnify the "effective" particle size many times, making detection through an optical microscope possible.

  • Patent number: 4923491
Abstract: A centrifugal filter for separating aerosol particles from a gas stream including a rotatable hollow hub and at least one pair of disks fixedly mounted in spaced apart relationship on the hub within a stationary housing mounted on the hub. The hub is perforated in the region between the two disks and is coupled to a vacuum pump so that the interior of the hub is at a lower pressure relative to the space between the disks. The hub is rotated, causing rotation of the disks. Aerosol particles in a flow gas are introduced between the disks and the housing at the periphery of the rotating disks. The pressure differential produced at the hub perforations draws the aerosol laden gas toward the hub. As the aerosol laden gas enters between the rotating disks and the housing, it experiences an acceleration to nearly the angular velocity of the disks, which results in a centrifugal force being applied to the aerosol particles in a direction opposite to the drag force exerted by the vacuum pump.

  • Patent number: 4905705
Abstract: A heart monitoring system for assessing a patient's cardiac condition. Bioimpedance components induce an electric current through the thorax of a patient's body and a first signal representing amplitude of transthoracic impedance as a function of time is obtained. Electrocardiograph components obtain an electrocardiograph signal from the patient simultaneously with the first signal. First processing circuitry is connected to the bioimpedance components for processing the first signal and producing therefrom a second signal representing cardiovascular hemodynamic changes as a function of time. Second processing circuitry is connected to the electrocardiograph components for measuring changes in the electrocardiograph signal. An analyzer is connected to the first and second processing circuits for producing an output indicating changes in a portion of the second signal over a period of time relative to changes in the electrocardiograph signal over the same period of time.

  • Patent number: 4870030
Abstract: A remote plasma enhanced CVD apparatus and method for growing semiconductor layers on a substrate, wherein an intermediate feed gas, which does not itself contain constituent elements to be deposited, is first activated in an activation region to produce plural reactive species of the feed gas. These reactive species are then spatially filtered to remove selected of the reactive species, leaving only other, typically metastable, species which are then mixed with a carrier gas including constituent elements to be deposited on the substrate. During this mixing, the selected spatially filtered reactive species of the feed gas chemically interacts, i.e., partially dissociates and activates, in the gas phase, the carrier gas, with the process variables being selected so that there is no back-diffusion of gases or reactive species into the feed gas activation region. The dissociated and activated carrier gas along with the surviving reactive species of the feed gas then flows to the substrate.
