Abstract: A microchannel-membrane device comprises a microchannel extending through at least one electrode, the microchannel having a predetermined depth; an ionic permselective medium, such as a membrane, across the microchannel between the electrodes; and a heater, or array of heaters, embedded below the microchannel on at least one side of the permselective membrane. The heaters can be either prefabricated or dynamically patterned using laser illumination with/without photoconductive coating. The heaters are on the depletion side of the membrane and induce a vortex which limits the growth of the diffusion area. Operation of the heaters allows for controlled positioning of the end of the diffusion area and with it also the position of the preconcentrated molecule plug.

Abstract: A waveguide has a first conductor surface facing toward the interior of the waveguide, a second conductor surface facing toward the interior of the waveguide, and a slot extending from the first conductor surface to the outside of the waveguide. The first conductor surface and the second conductor surface electrically communicate with each other and face each other. The first length in the y direction of the first conductor surface in a cross section perpendicular to the z direction is smaller than the second length in the y direction of the second conductor surface in the cross section perpendicular to the z direction. The first length includes the length in the y direction of the slot in the cross section perpendicular to the z direction. The second length is smaller than the distance between the first conductor surface and the second conductor surface in the x direction.

Abstract: A device and method for manufacturing a two-dimensional electrostrictive field effect transistor having a substrate, a source, a drain, and a channel disposed between the source and the drain. The channel is a two-dimensional layered material and a gate proximate the channel. The gate has a column of an electrostrictive or piezoelectric or ferroelectric material, wherein an electrical input to the gate produces an elongation of the column that applies a force or mechanical stress on the channel and reduces a bandgap of two-dimensional material such that the two-dimensional electrostrictive field effect transistor operates with a subthreshold slope that is less than 60 mV/decade.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a chemo-proteomic probe for labelling and monitoring a live microbe interacting with a host cell and for qualitative and quantitative analyses of those proteins involved during a microbe infects the host cell. This probe comprises a functional group for conjugating to a surface protein of a live microbe under a physiological condition; a photo-reactive group for covalent cross-linking to an interacting cell protein of a host; and a tag for isolating the cross-linked complex of the surface protein of said live microbe and the interacting protein of a host cell for qualitative and quantitative proteomics analyses. The probe may further comprise a visualization tag. This technology takes advantage of the high throughput feature of mass spectrometry analysis and combines it with a uniquely designed chemistry to achieve high efficient isolation and analysis of host cell proteins interacting with a pathogen at different stages of an infection.
