Abstract: Described herein is the synthesis of reinforced adhesive complex coacervates and their use thereof. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates are composed of (a) at least one polycation, (b) at least one polyanion, and (c) a reinforcing component. The adhesive complex coacervates described herein can be subsequently cured to produce strong, cohesive adhesives. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates have several desirable features when compared to conventional adhesives. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates are effective in wet or underwater applications. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates described herein, being phase separated from water, can be applied underwater without dissolving or dispersing into the water. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates have numerous biological applications as bioadhesives and bioactive delivery devices.
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for reducing roughness using integrated atomic layer deposition (ALD) and etch processes are described herein. In some implementations, after a mask is provided on a substrate, methods include depositing a conformal layer on the mask by ALD to reduce roughness and etching a layer underlying the mask to form patterned features having a reduced roughness. In some implementations, after a substrate is etched to a first depth to form features at the first depth in the substrate, methods include depositing a conformal layer by ALD on sidewalls of the features to protect sidewalls and reduce roughness during a subsequent etch process. The ALD and etch processes may be performed in a plasma chamber.
Abstract: A method of training a learning machine to detect spills of hydrocarbon liquids from pipelines. A neural network is trained by collecting samples of a number of different ground materials as well as a number of liquid hydrocarbons. For each hydrocarbon, a spill is simulated on each ground material. For each of these spills, a thermal camera and a visible light camera are used to capture images. The images from the two cameras are fused, and input to the neural network for classification training. Once the neural network is trained, a system having the two cameras and the neural network can be used to detect actual hydrocarbon spills.
