  • Patent number: 9555127
Abstract: The invention relates to a biological system for diminishing cell growth or inducing selective killing of target cells, in particular pathogenic bacterial or fungal cells, or cancer cells. The biological system is based on toxin-antitoxin systems, as found in prokaryotic plasmids and their host chromosomes. The biological system comprises a vehicle with a first nucleic acid sequence or amino acid sequence encoding for a prokaryotic toxin of a prokaryotic toxin-antitoxin pair, and a second nucleic acid sequence or amino acid sequence encoding for the corresponding prokaryotic antitoxin of the prokaryotic toxin-antitoxin pair. The system is characterized in that the toxin and/or the antitoxin is operably linked to a protein output modifier (POM) that comprises a nucleic acid sequence or amino acid sequence that modifies the relative rate of transcription, mRNA stability, mRNA translatability or protein stability of the toxin and/or antitoxin.

  • Patent number: 9558138
Abstract: A system and method for making and using a computing system with unified storage, processing, and network switch fabrics are provided. Processing nodes, either physical or virtual, are associated with intra-module ports, inter-module ports, and local storage spaces. A plurality of processing nodes are linked through intra-module ports to form processing modules. A plurality of the processing modules are further connected through inter-module ports to form the computing system. Several inter-module connection schemes are described, each of which can be adapted to use with existing network packet routing algorithms. Each processing node need only to keep track of the states of its directly connected neighbors, obviating the need for a high-speed connection to the rest processing nodes within the system. As a result, dedicated network switching equipment is not needed and network capacity grows naturally as processing nodes are added.

  • Patent number: 9559262
Abstract: Provided is a vertical type light emitting device and a method of manufacturing the same. A transparent electrode having high transmittance with respect to light in the entire range and constructed by using a resistance change material of which resistance state is to be changed from a high resistance state to a low resistance state if a voltage exceeding a threshold voltage inherent in a material is applied so that conducting filaments are formed is formed between an electrode pad and a semiconductor layer of a light emitting device. The transparent electrode has high transmittance with respect to the light in a UV wavelength range as well as in a visible wavelength range generated in the light emitting device. Since the conductivity of the transparent electrode is heightened due to the formation of the conducting filaments, the transparent electrode has good ohmic contact characteristic with respect to a semiconductor layer.

  • Patent number: 9559485
Abstract: A dual wavelength pumping system and method have been developed to improve the efficiency of laser systems operating in the raid infrared region has been developed, in a conventional system the ions are excited from a ground state to an upper lasing state using a light pump. They then undergo a laser transition to leave the ion in a long lived post lasing excited state from which it eventually decays back to the ground state. In contrast they present system uses a first light pump to pump ions from the ground state to the post lasing state, and a second light pump to pump ions from the post lasing state to the upper lasing state. This system thus exploits the long lifetime of the post lasing state to enable it to become a virtual ground state for the second laser allowing continued cycling of ions between the upper lasing state and the post lasing state. A system using an Erbium, doped fiber generated a 3.5 ?m laser output with an average power of over 250 mW and an initial slope, efficiency of 25.

  • Patent number: 9558109
Abstract: A method for reducing an amount of time needed for a single iteration of arithmetic encoding and arithmetic decoding is provided. Rescaling and range are calculated in parallel, range being a High parameter bound of a symbol-interval—a Low parameter bound of the symbol-interval+1. A new iHigh (iH) parameter and a new iLow (iL) parameter or a given/decoded symbol is found according to a cumulative frequency for an ith symbol. iH parameter and iL parameter rescaling is performed by shifting an amount of most significant bits of iH, iL in accordance with values of iH and iL. iRange is shifted to the left in accordance with a number of digits needed to represent iRange and a total number of bits reserved for iRange. A shifted iRange is divided by CF[N] and saved to Step_tmp while awaiting a result of H,L rescaling.
