Abstract: A non contact sensor for use in magnetostrictive testing of a solid ferrous structure. In its simplest form, the sensor has a set of permanent magnets arranged in a row with their poles in the same direction, an electrical coil wrapped around the set of magnets, wrapped in direction parallel to the common poles of the magnets, thereby forming a top portion above the set of magnets and a bottom portion below the set of magnets, and a metal shield interposed between the top portion of the coil and the set of magnets. The sensor is operable such that a time varying current in the coil causes guided waves to travel to the structure and to be reflected from anomalies in the structure even when there is no ferromagnetic coupling material between the sensor and the structure.
Abstract: The system for use on board of a vehicle comprises a decomposition unit (2) for decomposing a compound under catalysis of a biological catalyst (3). The compound is for instance an ammonia precursor, and the biological catalyst is in solid form. At least one transfer means is present for transferring one of said compound and biological catalyst towards and/or away from the other one. The transfer means are for instance a moving device (15), for instance in the form of a float.

Abstract: An apparatus of this invention is directed to an information processing apparatus for fabricating a desired three-dimensional fabricated object by accelerating heat dissipation of a laminated portion at a time of fabricating the three-dimensional fabricated object. This information processing apparatus includes an acquirer that acquires laminating and fabricating data of a three-dimensional fabricating model, and a data generator that generates laminating and fabricating data by adding, to the three-dimensional fabricating model, a heat dissipation structure model for performing heat dissipation from a fabricated portion at a laminating and fabricating time. The added heat dissipation structure model is prepared and stored as a heat dissipation structure model obtained by combining a polyhedron having a predetermined volume and a heat dissipation structure model added to a predetermined surface of the polyhedron.

Abstract: The blood-brain barrier (BBB) prevents transport of molecules larger than 500 Dal tons from blood to brain. Receptor-mediated transcytosis (RMT) facilitates transport across the BBB of specific molecules that bind receptors on brain endothelial cells that form the BBB. An insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF 1R)-binding antibody or fragment thereof is identified that transmigrates the BBB by RMT. The antibody or fragment is used to deliver a cargo molecule across the BBB, wherein the cargo molecule may be a therapeutic or detectable agent. The antibody is a camelid VHH, prepared by immunizing a llama with a 933-amino acid IGF 1R polypeptide. Humanized forms of the camelid VHH are also generated.

Abstract: This invention relates to bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids reacted with vinyl ether compounds to form liquid vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids. These liquid vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids can be mixed with a polyfunctional vegetable oil-based epoxy resin to form a homogeneous curable coating composition. Upon curing at elevated temperature, thermoset coatings are formed which have excellent hardness, solvent resistance, adhesion, and flexibility. The invention also relates to the use of a curable coating composition comprising at least one polyfunctional vegetable oil-based epoxy resin and at least one vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acid, which may be coated onto a substrate and cured thermally. Methods of making the vinyl-blocked bio-based polyfunctional carboxylic acids and curable coating compositions and substrates containing the same are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention provides multilayer polymer films, materials and coatings which exhibit robust underwater superoleophobicity and have remarkable structural functional tolerance to a broad range of physical, chemical, and environmental challenges encountered by surfaces deployed in aqueous or aquatic environments. These materials can be fabricated on surfaces of arbitrary shape, size, and composition and provide straightforward means to manipulate surface chemistry and fine-tune other useful features of the interfacial behavior (e.g., underwater oil-adhesiveness). These materials address key obstacles to the application of non-wetting surfaces and anti-fouling ‘super-phobic’ materials in practical, real-world scenarios.

Abstract: A processor-implemented method for sound characterization is described. In one implementation, time-frequency transform of each of a plurality of sound signals from one or more sources, the sound signals being detected by a plurality of sensing devices, is derived. One or more single-source constant-time analysis zones based at least on correlation between the time-frequency transform signals from a pair of sensing devices are detected. At least one direction of arrival for each source in the detected single source analysis zones are detected. A histogram of the estimated directions of arrival is created and an estimate of a number of the sound sources and corresponding directions of arrival are generated based at least on the histogram.

Abstract: A frequency synthesizer and a method for frequency synthesis are provided. The frequency synthesizer includes a subband phase-locked loop (PLL) and a main PLL. A divisor of an adjustable non-integer frequency divider in the subband PLL is adjusted, and a channel frequency of a maximum frequency band of all frequency bands is output. A divisor of an adjustable integer frequency divider in the main PLL is adjusted, and a center frequency required for each frequency band of the all frequency bands is output. The center frequency and the channel frequency are mixed by a mixer to produce a band frequency. A quantization noise generated by the adjustable non-integer frequency divider is filtered out by the subband PLL to reduce the impact of the quantization noise on the main PLL.
