  • Patent number: 8616279
Abstract: A method for treating water at a water treatment facility is provided. In one aspect, the water has been circulated through a subsurface formation in a shale oil development area. The subsurface formation may comprise shale that has been spent due to pyrolysis of formation hydrocarbons. The method in one embodiment includes receiving the water at the water treatment facility, and treating the water at the water treatment facility in order to (i) substantially separate oil from the water, (ii) substantially remove organic materials from the water, (iii) substantially reduce hardness and alkalinity of the water, (iv) substantially remove dissolved inorganic solids from the water, and/or (v) substantially remove suspended solids from the water. The method may further includes delivering the water that has been treated at the water treatment facility re-injecting the treated water into the subsurface formation to continue leaching out contaminants from the spent shale.

  • Patent number: 8617888
Abstract: A modified P. aeruginosa type III secretion system has been developed that efficiently delivers selected proteins into a host cell. In one example, a functional nuclear Cre Recombinase is injected into embryonic stem (ES) cells and can be used to induce pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. • Patent number: 8618010
Abstract: The present invention relates to new processes for regenerating oxidized interstitial metal hydride containing catalysts prior to the use of such catalysts in a hydroprocessing process. Interstitial metal hydride containing catalysts are easily oxidized in the environment and once oxidized, the hydroprocessing activity of the interstitial metal hydrides is most often severely diminished and this lost activity due to oxidization of the iMeH is not susceptible to recovery under hydroprocessing conditions. As a result, these catalysts in the present art require considerable special handling in inert environments all through processes from fabrication, shipping, loading, use, and maintenance of the catalyst systems to protect the activity of the interstitial metal hydride components.

  • Patent number: 8617383
Abstract: An integrated process for producing naphtha fuel, diesel fuel and/or lubricant base oils from feedstocks under sour conditions is provided. The ability to process feedstocks under higher sulfur and/or nitrogen conditions allows for reduced cost processing and increases the flexibility in selecting a suitable feedstock. The sour feed can be delivered to a catalytic dewaxing step without any separation of sulfur and nitrogen contaminants, or with only a high pressure separation so that the dewaxing still occurs under sour conditions. Various combinations of hydrotreating, catalytic dewaxing, hydrocracking, and hydrofinishing can be used to produce fuel products and lubricant base oil products.

  • Patent number: 8619580
Abstract: Provided is a method and apparatus for transmitting a packet in a wireless communication system. A method for transmitting a packet by a packet transmission apparatus in a wireless communication system includes determining whether the packet is a response packet, and transmitting the packet with a higher channel access opportunity than another packet transmission apparatus of the wireless communication system, if the packet is a response packet. Accordingly, it is possible to solve the problem that the total system performance degrades because a packet transmission apparatus fails to fully use its own transmission time by failing to rapidly receive a response packet even when packets remain to be transmitted in a wireless communication system using a contention-based channel access scheme.

  • Patent number: 8616280
Abstract: A method of completing a wellbore in a subsurface formation. The method principally has application to subsurface formations comprising organic-rich rock that is to be heated in situ. Heating the organic-rich rock pyrolyzes solid hydrocarbons into hydrocarbon fluids. The method includes identifying sections along the wellbore where the organic richness of formation rock within the identified zones varies over short distances. Such variance presents a risk of mechanical failure to downhole equipment. The method further includes strengthening the downhole equipment in at least one of the identified sections.
