  • Patent number: 7858710
Abstract: A method of preparing periodic, semi-periodic, or semi-random polyethylene-co-acrylic acid or polyethylene-co-methacrylic acid involves polymerizing 1-alkoxyalkyl ester substituted ?,?-dienes, and/or 1-alkoxyalkyl ester substituted cycloalkenes via olefin metathesis reactions followed by hydrogenation of the alkylene units and subsequently hydrolyzed to the desired polyethylene-co-acrylic acid or polyethylene-co-methacrylic acid. The polyethylene-co-acrylic acid or polyethylene-co-methacrylic acid can then be converted to ionomers by exchange with a monomeric carboxylate salt.

  • Patent number: 7858593
Abstract: The invention relates to the field of muscle pathologies, more particularly to the field of diseases where skeletal muscle degeneration occurs. The invention describes transgenic mice that do not produce prolyl-hydroxylase-1, -2 or -3. It is revealed that the phenotype of the prolyl-hydroxylase 1 knock-out mouse is characterized by a protection of skeletal muscle atrophy due to a variety of muscle damages, especially ischemic insults. The invention thus relates to the use of molecules that can bind to prolyl-hydroxylase-1 for the prevention and/or treatment of skeletal muscle degeneration.

  • Patent number: 7860465
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for providing transmit diversity to an open-loop MIMO communication scheme, such as a point to multipoint broadcast service in a cellular system. Multiple data streams of the broadcast data are broadcast by way of transmit diversity antennas of a sending station. The data symbols of the separate data streams are phase-shifted to be offset in phase from one another. The data streams, once the data symbols thereof are selectably phase-shifted by a phase shifter, are applied by an applier to sending nodes of the respective cells.

  • Patent number: 7856881
Abstract: The average strength or Young's modulus of the constituent particles of a sample is determined from the measured speed of sound propagated from a source through the sample to a receiver. Other sample data, such as the porosity, Poisson's ratio and the pressure applied to the sample, are also used in the determination. However, no data pertaining to individual particle sizes is required. The method provides a non-destructive test for the average strengths of materials such as iron ore pellets, alumina powder, silica flour, and coal dust.

  • Publication number: 20100320120
Abstract: Heat from nuclear reactor as a source of thermal energy is applied to the conversion of carbonaceous materials such as heavy petroleum crude oils, coals and biomass to liquid hydrocarbons. The heat is applied to provide at least a portion of the process heat used in the high temperature, short contact time hydropyrolysis of the carbonaceous material which is supplied with hydrogen generated by a high temperature process such as high temperature steam electrolysis, the sulfur-iodine cycle, the hybrid sulfur cycle, the zinc-zinc oxide cycle, a solid oxide fuel cell or by methane steam cracking. The heat from the nuclear reactor may be used to generate electricity to operate high temperature steam electrolysis used in generation of the hydrogen. By the use of nuclear thermal energy, hydrocarbon resource utilization for process heat is eliminated along with carbon dioxide evolution associated with burning of the hydrocarbon resource to generate process heat.
