  • Patent number: 7158499
Abstract: A method and apparatus for communicating audio messages uses a two-way radio. An output audio message is asynchronously transmitted by generating a first acoustic signal in an input device of the radio. A determination is made whether the first acoustic signal is a command. If the acoustic signal is a command, then a response is generated in an output device, and the command is processed. Otherwise, the first acoustic signal is stored in an output buffer and then later sent as an output audio message only when a communications channel is available. An input audio message is asynchronously received in a receiver of the radio, and then stored in an input buffer. A second acoustic signal is generated which causes the stored input audio message to be sent to the output device only if the second acoustic signal is a play command.

  • Patent number: 7157701
Abstract: The invention provides a method of design for a time-of-flight mass spectrometer that is compact and has high mass resolution over a broad range of ion masses. This method of design, for the high-resolution analysis of analyte ions in the time-of-flight mass spectrometer, includes decreasing the strength of the time-dependent extraction potential according to a predetermined continuous function so as to spread out the energy distribution of the ions and achieving high mass resolution over a broad range of masses without altering the time dependence or magnitude of the applied potentials, across the acceleration region and ion mirror, and the time-dependent extraction potential, and not changing the physical dimensions of the mass spectrometer. Using this method of design, mass resolution of approximately or greater than 10,000 can be achieved over approximately five orders of magnitude of mass for a time-of-flight mass spectrometer having a total overall length of less than 46 cm.

  • Patent number: 7156902
Abstract: A gas separation apparatus combines the technologies of electrostatic precipitators and centrifugal particle separators into a single unit. At an inlet into the gas separation apparatus, a water spray is introduced into the gas stream. The water spray may include various chemical additives, typically selected to react with or neutralize the particulates as they are mixed with the water or for other benefit. The resulting water and particulate mixture, which is much more dense than air, is centrifugally separated and collected through a drain tube outlet. In addition to the centrifugal forces applied to the gas and water stream, an electrical field of magnitude sufficient to produce coronal discharge is also applied to a central electrode. The electric field is generated between the cylinder wall and the central electrode, to assist the centrifugal forces and thereby remove additional particulate beyond that ordinarily removed by a standard centrifugal separator.

  • Patent number: 7157227
Abstract: Microarray technology allows the multiple parallel processing of information generated from matrices of huge numbers of loci on a solid substrate, which is useful in the gathering of gene signatures defining specific biological states. An approach has been developed to facilitate this process wherein genes of the same regulatory modality are selected. The transcriptional regulation of these genes is related to the same control element. Primers specific for the regulatory genes are selected, based on minimum cross-reactivity with other genes, using known gene data banks. PCR products of selected regions of known genes either binding to this sequence or whose expression is dependent on this binding, as well as genes interacting with the regulatable genes and control genes, referred to as “amplicons” or “gene cDNA fragments” of between about 450 and 1000 nucleotide bases in length, are obtained from a total RNA pool.

  • Patent number: 7157976
Abstract: A high frequency amplifier comprising a first trans-impedance amplifier, a second trans-impedance amplifier, a third amplifier, and a variant current source is provided. The first trans-impedance amplifier receives an input current and outputs a first output voltage accordingly. The second trans-impedance outputs a second voltage. The third amplifier receives the first and the second voltage. The variant current source is connected between the input terminal of the second trans-impedance and a ground terminal or a power supply source. The variant current source delivers a variant current to change the second voltage such that the second voltage may follow the first voltage. The input current flows into the first trans-impedance amplifier, while the variant current flows into the second trans-impedance amplifier. The input current flows out the first trans-impedance amplifier, while the variant current flows out the second trans-impedance amplifier.

  • Patent number: 7158562
Abstract: A Gigabit transceiver (1) has a receiver (2) and a transmitter (3). There is an ADC (5) in the receiver (2) for each channel (A, B, C, D). The ADCs (5) oversample at a factor of 2. However the remainder of the digital circuitry and transmitter DACs (2) operate off half of the oversampling rate. In the receiver (2) fractionally spaced equalisers (FSES, 6) ensure that the optimum sampling phase is selected digitally. The invention avoids the need for a PLL in the receiver for each channel and associated interference and retiming problems.

  • Patent number: 7156484
Abstract: An inkjet printhead with nozzles 4 and liquid passages 31, 32 leading to each nozzle. The nozzles, ejection actuators 14, associated drive circuitry 22 and liquid passage 31, 32 being formed on and through a wafer 21 using lithographically masked etching technique, such that the wafer has a droplet ejection side and a liquid supply side. Each of the liquid passage is formed by etching a hole 31 partially through the wafer 21 from the droplet ejection side, and etching a passage from the liquid supply side of the wafer 21 to the hole 31. Etching a hole 31 into the wafer 21 from the droplet ejection side means the ink supply passage 32 can stop short of the interface between the dielectric 23 and the wafer 21 to prevent the etchant from tracking sideways and damaging the drive circuitry 22. As the inlet hole 31 is relatively shallow, the removal of the resist is not overly difficult. This allows the distance between the drive circuitry 22 and the inlet hole 31 to be reduced to less than 20 microns.

  • Patent number: 7156487
Abstract: A microfluidic pump driven by thermoacoustic effect is mainly composed of a thermoacoustic device, a fluid-storing tank, and at least one microchannel, etc., wherein the thermoacoustic device may convert thermal energy into acoustic energy. Pressure fluctuation and velocity fluctuation with high frequency are generated by the acoustic wave. According to the high amplitude pressure fluctuation, the microfluid with high moving velocity emitted through microchannels. Since there is no movable part arranged in the thermo-acoustic generator. In the meantime, it indirectly drives the working fluid located in the fluid-storing tank by the manner of indirect contact. So the present invention may be applied in the non-conductive fluid so as to greatly extend its field of application. Moreover, the characteristics of the fluid won't be influenced by the heating process as well. The present invention is indeed a microfluid-driving device that has inventiveness and high application value.
