  • Patent number: 9054863
Abstract: Aspects of the present invention provide machines, systems, and methods in which industrial control systems may be secured from compromise and/or disruption via authentication and firewall. In particular, an industrial controller may: randomly generate an exchange key and send the exchange key to a client device in response to a transaction request originating from the client device; combine the exchange key with a locally stored pass key to produce an authentication code; and compare a challenge key received from the client device to the authentication code to determine a match between the challenge key and the authentication code. A successful match between the challenge key and the authentication code may allow the client device to further access the industrial controller using a common industrial protocol (CIP), and a failed match between the challenge key and the authentication code may prevent the client device from further access to the industrial controller.

  • Publication number: 20150134086
Abstract: Present embodiments include a system and method for providing an input-driven, switching-enabled display device for an automation controller. The display device may include a communication interface port, such as a universal serial bus (USB) port, which is installed in the display device so that it may be easily accessible by a user. The port may increase a user's productivity and efficiency by reducing the time it takes to connect a PC to the automation controller. The display device may also include an interface switch that performs display functionality or port adapter functionality based upon whether a port connection and/or port communication traffic are detected. Thus, embodiments may enable the display device to act as both a text display and a gateway to configure the automation controller with a personal computer (PC) through the use of the easy access port.

  • Publication number: 20130178984
Abstract: A motor control system is provided that includes a communication gateway that facilitates connection of components, such as a motor starter, an operator interface, and a terminal block, through a digital communication link. The communication gateway includes control logic designed to discover interface and operational components connected to the digital communication link upon start-up of the motor control system. The control logic may then set up an operational profile for the motor control system based on the discovered components. For example, the control logic may retrieve and load an operational profile that corresponds to the set of discovered components from a storage of the communication gateway. The operational profile can then be used during operation of the motor control system to govern the functionality of the motor control system.

  • Publication number: 20120242352
Abstract: Present techniques provide an inductive proximity sensor having a multi-receiver coil assembly and an evaluator circuit configured to receive a differential signal from the multi-receiver coil assembly to determine the presence of a target. The multi-receiver coil assembly includes two receiver coils in a differential coil arrangement and a transmitter coil configured to emit an electromagnetic field and induce a voltage on each of the receiver coils. The voltage difference between the two receiver coils is transmitted as a differential signal to the evaluator circuit. Targets which approach the inductive proximity sensor disrupt the electromagnetic field and change the induced voltages on each of the receiver coils, thereby changing the differential signal. The evaluator circuit processes the differential signal to determine whether the changes indicate that a target is present.
