  • Patent number: 9731377
Abstract: A method of bonding a first article to a second article, each article having a respective bond surface. The method comprises interposing a porous interlayer region between the bond surfaces of the first and second articles and subsequently using electrical resistance heating to locally heat the interlayer region under contact pressure to a bonding temperature below the melting temperature of the interlayer and the first and second articles to thereby bond the interlayer to the first and second articles to form a bonded article. The interlayer has a porosity of between approximately 10% and 30%.

  • Publication number: 20170226859
Abstract: A thrust balancing mechanism for balancing axial loads on a rotor thrust bearing 3 is described. The mechanism comprises a piston arrangement 6 axially mounted on a stationary structure 2, about a centre axis arranged, in use, in coaxial alignment with a rotating shaft 1 carrying the rotor thrust bearing 3. A hydrodynamic thrust bearing 8 is mounted, in use, between the piston 6 and the rotor thrust bearing 3. The piston 6 is pressurised so as to impart to the rotor thrust bearing 3, via the hydrodynamic thrust bearing 8, an axial load which counters an axial load imparted to the rotor thrust bearing 3 by the rotating shaft 1.

  • Publication number: 20170226890
Abstract: A fluid system comprising a surface that is fluid washed in use by a fluid flow travelling substantially parallel to the surface is disclosed. The system has a first port through the surface and a second port through the surface, the first and second ports having respective first and second port inlets that are substantially flush with the fluid washed surface. The first and second port inlets are stacked in a direction parallel to the normal flow of fluid over the fluid washed surface such that the first port is upstream of the second port and fluid travelling closer to the fluid-washed surface entering into the first port tends to entrain fluid travelling further from the fluid-washed surface for entry into the second port.

Abstract: An apparatus for manufacturing an article from powder material includes a canister, a sorter, a plurality of hoppers and at least one valve. The canister has a predetermined internal shape to define the shape of the powder metal article. The sorter sorts the powder material by the size of the powder particles, the shape of the powder particles and/or the flow characteristics of the powder particles. The hoppers contain powder material with different sizes of powder particles, different shapes of powder particles and/or powder particles with different flow characteristics. The hoppers are arranged to supply the sorted powder material to the canister. The at least one valve controls the proportions of the different powder materials supplied from the one or more of the different hoppers into the canister to control the packing density of the powder material in the canister at all positions in the canister.

  • Patent number: 9729096
Abstract: An aircraft electrical power generation system includes an AC generator having a rotor including a plurality of electromagnetic rotor-windings and stator including plurality of electrical stator-windings. The rotor mechanically coupled to a shaft of a gas turbine engine by transmission-system. The generator includes a frequency controller, a torque sensor determining a torque on the transmission-system by the generator and controller to operate the system in first and second modes. In first mode, the power output frequency of the generator controlled by the frequency controller within limits, and reduced idle signal going to a turbine engine controller. In second mode, the power output frequency of the generator not controlled by the frequency controller and increased idle signal going to the turbine engine controller. • Patent number: 9726030
Abstract: A flow deflector arrangement is used in combination with a pipe arrangement secured through a component, the flow deflector arrangement comprising: a nut to secure the pipe arrangement to the component, and a shroud for attachment to the component so as to extend at least partially around the pipe arrangement when the pipe arrangement is secured to the component by the nut. The nut has an outwardly directed flange to adopt a position spaced from the component, and the shroud defines at least one deflector surface which, when the shroud is attached to the component, extends away from the component in spaced relation to the pipe arrangement. The flange and the deflector surface cooperate in deflecting a flow of fluid flowing from the component and along the outside of the pipe arrangement such that the flow is deflected generally outwardly from the pipe arrangement with a degree of swirl.
