Patent number: 9718118Abstract: A forging apparatus and method is disclosed in which an extrusion punch is held between an upper press and a lower press and propelled towards a billet by a ram to form an extruded shaped component. The extrusion punch has a striking face in which a recess is formed. During the extrusion process, material from the billet enters the recess so as to lock the extrusion punch and the shaped component together. Accordingly the shaped component is not lifted up with the upper press when it is separated from the lower press and so the position of the shaped component after the forging extrusion operation is known accurately and reliably.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2014Date of Patent: August 1, 2017Assignee: ROLLS-ROYCE plcInventor: John McBain

Patent number: 9719375Abstract: A method of axially separating an annular system, such as a gas turbine engine (10), comprising first (34) and second (36) annular components. An annular array of fastenings (42) couples the first (34) and second (36) components together axially. The first (34) and second (36) components are supported by support tooling. The fastenings (42) are removed to leave one fastening (42) located on each side of the system. One of the remaining fastenings (42) is removed. The relative height of the first (34) and second (36) components is adjusted so that the apertures (46, 48) for the fastening (42) removed at the previous step are aligned. Then the final fastening (42) is removed.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2014Date of Patent: August 1, 2017Assignee: ROLLS-ROYCE plcInventor: Michael Leslie Burns

Patent number: 9719356Abstract: An automated technique for finishing gas turbine engine blades or vanes by generating a bespoke tooling path for each blade or vane. The bespoke tooling path is generated by scanning the aerofoil surface to generate a 3-D electronic representation of the surface. The 3-D electronic surface is then analyzed to identify imperfections or defects, and then a machining path a generated through which the imperfections can be removed. The machining path is determined so as to smoothly blend the surface back to the underlying surface where the imperfections had been present. In this way, the resulting aerofoil, once machined, has optimized aerodynamic performance.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2014Date of Patent: August 1, 2017Assignee: ROLLS-ROYCE plcInventor: Roisin Louise Hanlon

Publication number: 20170198589Abstract: A turbine blade includes a labyrinth of internal channels for the circulation of coolant received through an inlet formed in a terminal portion of the blade root and leading to a duct- defined wall. A first passage intersects the duct and extends through the blade towards a tip. An end of the first passage is arranged to capture incoming coolant flow. A second passage intersects the duct at a position downstream of the first passage intersection. The duct and/or the passage intersections are configured to create a pressure drop in the duct in the direction from the inlet to the second passage intersection. In an axial direction, a duct wall terminates at a position between the inlet and the second passage intersection to balance the pressure of coolant in the duct with the pressure of coolant in a leakage path thereby reducing the mass flow of coolant entering the leakage path.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 7, 2016Publication date: July 13, 2017Applicant: ROLLS-ROYCE plcInventors: Peter C.
